Lets kick off episode 1 of the homestead chat series! This is a weekly series I want to make to help you see the steps we took to begin homesteading. Because homesteading for beginners in Australia can come from many different beginnings, and this is where we started on our homesteading journey. So if you want to homestead in Australia this can be a guide on where to begin. In this last year and a half we moved from convenience to growing 80% of our own food. Including meat, vegetables and fruit. These are the reflections from a beginner homesteader on what its like homesteading in Australia and where to begin.

I love homestead chat! We are one year into our homestead in Wollondillyshire. Are you much more coastal and southern than us? Our tiny dinosaurs are still moulting and not laying yet. We’ve had to buy eggs from the grocer *gasp!*. Are you free feeding your chooks? Mine are frees range during the day along with guinea fowl and ducks. Nobody is laying, not even my two original two-year old chooks. My first garden was destroyed in our abundant rain so I’ve had to start everything over - though, you’re right about how amazing some plants are at regrowing from the roots I’ve left behind. Yay chard and beetroot greens! I’d love to hear what all the rain and cool summer has done to impact gardens.
By the by, this has also been my first full year gardening in Australia. It’s a completely new environment to me, so I’m learning everything from square one. I love to hear what others are doing in this area for success. I look forward to all the homestead chats!
Hello! Yay that fills my heart with joy :) I'm sure you will find many parallels between your homestead and ours as we have been here for about the same time! We are much more south than you, but about the same distance from the coast. We're just out of Bega.
I'm sorry about your chooks not paying their rent! Our older girls are also molting at the moment and their egg laying has reduced. But it sounds to me like your ladies might have found themselves a secret place to lay eggs! Ours did this not long ago (they're currently in a net to help train them to lay in their nesting box again!) I try to introduce younger birds to our egg layers when I can, as they lay a lot better while young.
Oh the Summer rains, don't even get me started!!! Everything is sooo wet, and no break in sight - woodchips help a lot in soaking this up - but when the woodchips are already waterlogged there is little to be done, but wait.

Absolutely loved watching this video, Diane! I'm so in awe of everything you guys are doing and so excited for this series! What you said about mixing recipes up for the seasons is so true! I find if I don't regularly go out to the markets seeing all the fresh in season food I get so bored with cooking - I need that inspiration from the garden and markets. Thanks so much for sharing! 💚🌿

Sooo true, and often the farmers have great suggestions to use the more unusual or new vegetables! Which I love :)
Hey guys, I love how you worked your way up to a homestead slowly. I think making small lifestyle changes and gradual steps towards a larger property is how I’d do it too.
Thanks David, it helped us to feel confident this was the lifestyle we needed/wanted. There was a lot of doubt from our family, but since being here we are honestly never going to turn back!
Thanks for sharing your journey. It I'd always great to hear from people how they ended up where they are. Everyone has their own unique reasons. I loved how you have grown your homestead, sounds like you have really thought it through.
We hit the ground running, and over committed. Took on too many animals and too many projects. Now we have pulled back, and only have our dog and two pet alpacas. Which I might add are underrated permaculture animals. They tend to leave the native plants and eat our weeds and they poop in one spot. Super helpful when collecting to put on your garden.

I love alpacas!! I would really like some in our sheep flock, but we want to be settled on our own property before we get some :) So thats great to know about how they contribute to the homestead!

I'm so glad to hear that Steph! I love that you are taking advantage of the space you have, even now I feel like there is more I wish I could do with my gardens in the future! It's great to be able to see where we came from and where we still want to go!
I love that you explained that it takes time to build a homestead. I think many feel they have to do it overnight and that’s never the case. I ditched MacDonalds after learning they still have the first burger ever made and it’s not broken down due to all the preservatives in it. Several years later I decided to try a burger and I was so sick after eating it because my body was so used to not eating them. So I totally get it when you say you don’t crave it any more. You gave some great tips throughout this video. I really appreciate that. That’s an amazing effort 80% and you both should feel so proud. Well done I’m proud of you both.
Recently had MacDonald's burger during long journey. Havnt had one for years. I avoid take way joints. My guts were grumbling and aching. Something is really wrong with what ingredients in there. My partner said next time he would rather eat road kill instead if MacDonald's.
Exactly! It can be so disheartening as a beginner, as unintentionally we compare ourselves to othera. But I am so thankful we took baby steps, got comfortable with a new normal and then made another change.

Yes used to give us awful atomach cramps and fatigue. Its a great change to make! I am just looking forward to raising our kids and not having to deal with "I want McDonalds tantrums" haha
@@DiandSam it’s just great to see someone pointing out those baby steps. Yep they have every burger ever made. It was a documentary on it. I so wish I could remember it’s name.
@@DiandSam I so hope you get that wish. As a parent of to now grown up kids once they get around other kids it will be hard to avoid them being introduced to it by others.

I have cut out cigarettes...playing the pokies...travelling...iced coffees!! The money I have saved for a block of land!! Oiii!! But how much do I truly have to give up?? LOL!! If I go out...I go out at least once a year!! I save up like $150 for the night out!! I still feel guilty going out and having a good night!! But it's worth it! Just don't do it every day and every night!! Everything in moderation right as they say?? LOL!!
That's the balance and decisions we each have to make ey :) I think a balance is definitely wise as you said you don't want guilt but enjoying your life is also essential!

Hi Diane, loving the new series. How do you link in with a farmer to buy meat in bulk?. I would love to do this but don’t know how.
Thanks Alice, I am so glad it has had so much positive feedback! I searched "free ranged" "pasture raised" and "organic" meat delivery near me. And just sifted through to find the closest and most ethical. Farmers markets are also a great way to find local, small farmers who sell direct to public, and you can often oeganise a whole animal with them - depending on their size 😊

The vegans will be upset lol. Just wondering if you process all the meat yourself or do you pay a butcher? My dad used to get a guy down the road to process his sheep and the deal was he kept the wool/ skin.
We process our own chooks, the pigs we had the local butcher (our neighbour) come and do it, and we went along to watch the cuts process. Eventually we want to take control but its a huge step.
Some of our best friends are vegans, and they really appreciate that were finding the sustainable route. Haha but I guess still not everyone can be pleased - and were not trying, we are just doing what is best for us :)
Which Melbourne suburb? I was in Werribee.
We were on the south east, Endeavour Hills, Glen Waverley kind of area
@@DiandSam I'm starting to think we were the only people in the southwest. Everyone I ever met came from the other side of the bay! I saw lots of people in the area though...aliens? 🤣
@@magnoliathebus hahaha! We have a few friends over in Colac and Ballarat, but the south-east does seem to be much more populated, I think it's the hills that attract people down that way or perhaps the access to public transport is done a bit better
