This was a cliffhanger! Congratulations on having the courage to attempt this repair as well as persevering through all the unknowns without giving up! I have this same W211 E320 CDI and recently had sudden problems as the result of a trip through an automated touchles car wash. As I drove away it became clear that the high-powered water jets had reached a bit too far into the car and gotten “something” wet that needed to be dry. The ABS and ESP, also BRAKE and check engine lights have persisted despite a skilled mechanic with a powerful ADB scanning tool resetting. Going back tomorrow for another scan and fingers are crossed it’ll take this time. But I’ve researched and become aware that the W211 series has a known issue with car wash water intrusion, so that’s a thing!
Thank you again for the exciting and dramatic video!

This absolutely fixed my problem! My alternator shorted out and the fuse in the wiring harness from the alternator to the starter blew. I believe this problem also caused the the Rear Sam to short circuit. Because after I fixed the draining battery because of the alternator short, my tail lights would not light up, blower fax, dynamic seat control and my rear shade would not work. After going to the junkyard and getting a Rear Sam for $20, replaced my old Rear Sam and whalla! All now working because of Car D. Ologist! Thank you sir :) I am not a mechanic either but I had the wiring schematic to make sure I was replacing the right part. The Rear Sam powered the tail lights.

Thank You Soooo.. Much for this video !!! after Watching it i noticed my 2006 R500 had the same issues. I was going to take it to a mechanic but after watching i decided to go to pick-a-part and see if i could find the SAM and try to replace it.
They didn't the exact match to my car so decided to pull the SAM of a r350 instead. I took it home installed it and wallah

This is a great video that shows determination and love for your W211. A few years ago I noticed humidity in that area and sprayed it with electrical wiring oil that disperses water. At 258,000 miles I do not have the problem. However, you have inspired me to take the trunk apart and spray it again.
These cars are tanks and once you take care of the Gremlins, the car will run forever. Enjoy unto another 270K miles.

Well done, Strong work! Prior to watching your video, I wouldn't have believed Rear SAM is swappable w/o SCN coding replacement unit to your specific vehicle although I've read in MB-world forums that this has been done before on W164 chassis. The W164 is notorious for water leaks around taillight pocket seals that eventually ruin Rear SAM in those if not caught in time.

Thanks for making the effort to make this video! As everyone knows when these things happen, mechanics out there may or may not know the solution but here you have your issues solved for less than 20 bucks. I have a E240 W211 myself if this does happen to me or my friend's vehicles one day, we sure know the solution to it.

Great opener isn't that us all. Your videos have helped me greatly, my Eclass is solid they sell for nothing that's why I'm keeping mine it's worth so much more than its worth if you get me. One big problem I did find was the underbody brake pipes here in Ireland we use crazy amounts of salt in winter the pipes were fubar only took me 3 months and 125ft of cunnifer. Keep up the good work glad to see your Eclass is still rocking.

Regards to the Mercedes they said at NCT the rubber brake hose was badly corroded and needs a new brake hose then the guy said might want to get the pipes under the plastic looked at too, when I pulled off the plastic I was speechless never seen anything like it before my Toyota is still on original lines and it's 17. After I replaced all the lines went to bleed dam needed star for that had to order offa China then to bleed it takes 7 liters brake fluid who buys 7 liters ended up buying 15l of brake fluid it was a nightmare but at least I know its good and safe now (bar the sbc)

One might add that the disassembly of the trunk liner will allow one to REPLACE THE REAR LIGHT CARRIERS! So if a light bulb is out in the rear light YOU CANNOT REPLACE INDIVIDUAL LIGHT BULBS!!!! So ..at about 100 bucks a pop, if one light bulb goes bad, you get to replace the ENTIRE carrier, after disassembly of the trunk liner, as shown here. ALL the light bulbs (rear light, brake lights, reverse lights and etc) all mounted in one cluster that you need to replace. Naturally one tries to replace just one bulb, trust me ..I tried. Not the way to go. Just find the least expensive source for that part on the internet and one a light bulb goes bad, just replace both carriers. As for replacing the SAM The little celebration dance is TOTALLY RIGHT! 20 bucks vs dealer work to the tune of a couple thousand! YES! (I got the same car, same attitude), Mr. Car D. Ologist has in the past given me the best pointers!!!!! THANK YOU Mr. Car.D. Ologist!!!!!

The best part of your repair is when you actually fix the cause: water intrusion!! Most would ppl have only replaced the old SAM...
The legendary rear SAM'S are excellent trouble sources both electrical and half-baked CAN software integration.
I have a W212 and confirm they are SCN coded. Some online services provide repairs to bypass needing re-coding.
NUGGET: Bösch CAN busses practically work better with NO Faults.
For some obscure reason the more faulty CAN modules are present, the more busy buses will be with greater latency delays... that in the end even the engine won't work as well.
Crazy door modules or camera are on separate CAN but affect car through CAN "Gateway Module" that routes messages between the 5 CANs. Most stable modules are engine + transmission while other unreliable peripherals modules are reliable revenu streams by designed!
