  • What is Lean PCOS, and why is it different than classical PCOS?
PCOS affects about eight to ten percent of reproductive-age women. Typically, we categorize it in traditional or conventional medicine. We categorize PCOS patients in type A-B-C or D in the naturopathic world or functional medicine world.
Typically, they are categorized by types, so you can have an inflammatory type PCOS, adrenal type PCOS, post-birth control PCOS, and insulin-resistant PCOS.
But for me, it's more about looking at PCOS Drivers - what is driving your PCOS? In your lifetime, it's possible for PCOS drivers to change.
So where does lean PCOS fit in here? Because really, when we talk about PCs, two-thirds of women fit more in that classical type PCOS, where insulin resistance and weight is a factor. About one-third of the patients who have PCOS or are diagnosed with PCOS have lean PCOS. And the reason why we use the word lean or skinny PCOS is that typically weight gain is not an issue. They're usually of a normal BMI or body mass index. It's referred to as Lean PCOS.
But lean PCOS patients also have insulin resistance. In fact, we think about 20% to 25% of women with lean PCOS. Insulin resistance is their primary driver.
The other thing unique about lean PCOS patients is they often have nutrient deficiencies because usually, it's a dysfunction, sort of the hypothalamus talking to the ovaries and the adrenal glands. And because of the other factors that play into Lean PCOS, they often have nutrient deficiencies and really should pay attention to getting tested for nutrient deficiencies.
You need to make sure that even though you're a normal body weight, you should still be checked for insulin resistance, you should be checked for inflammation, you should be checked for nutrient deficiencies.
It's important to understand that even if you were diagnosed as a lean PCOS patient, you still have to be concerned with insulin resistance because ultimately you need to lower your risk for having diabetes, heart disease, heart attack, high cholesterol, hypertension.
