Bad Water Pump - Sound of a Bad Bearing - Symptoms Bad Bearing - Idle Squeal Bad Water Pump

  • In order to run cool on those hot summer days, your engine needs to have a consistent flow of coolant supplied from the radiator throughout the engine. The water pump is the primary component responsible for maintaining this flow. When it works properly, your car will maintain a consistent operating temperature, run smoothly, and take you anywhere you need to travel. When the water pump fails or is beginning to wear out, it can lead to complete engine failure.
When the water cooled (as opposed to air cooled) engine was introduced, many automotive experts believed that the water pump circulating coolant through the engine block was just as critical to engine protection as oil. This philosophy holds true even as technology has improved over the years to create more efficient cooling systems in today's modern cars. Your car’s water pump is the key to making the entire system work. It is an impeller pump and is usually buried under the timing belt cover on the side of the engine. The pump is operated by the engine’s drive belt - as the belt turns, the pump turns. Blades on the pump force coolant to flow through the engine and back to the radiator to be cooled by a forced air cooling fan.
Although the water pumps in most modern cars, trucks, and SUVs will last a long time, they are by no means indestructible. Like any other mechanical device, they will produce a few warning signs that they are wearing out, so that car owners can contact a local ASE certified mechanic to replace the water pump before additional engine components are damaged.
    1. Coolant leak at the front-center of your car
The water pump is comprised of multiple gaskets and seals that keep coolant contained and ensure that consistent flow of coolant is delivered from the radiator to the engine. Eventually, these gaskets and seals will wear out, dry up, crack or break entirely. When this happens, coolant will leak from the water pump and drop to the ground, typically in the front of your car and in the center of the motor's location. If you notice that there is a leak of coolant (which will appear to be green or sometimes red in color) under the center of your car, truck or SUV, contact a professional mechanic to inspect this problem. More often than not, it's a leak from the water pump that can be repaired before it gets worse.
    2. Water pump pulley is loose and making whining sounds
From time to time you might hear a high pitched sound that comes from the front of the motor. This is typically caused by a loose belt that creates a harmonic buzzing or whining sound as it circulates. The loose belt is commonly caused by a pulley that has become loose or that the bearings that operate the water pump assembly are wearing out. Once the bearings fail inside the water pump, it means the unit cannot be repaired and will need to be replaced entirely.
If you notice that there is a loud whining sound coming from the front of your motor that increases in volume as you accelerate, contact a mechanic as soon as possible to inspect your vehicle.
    3. Engine is overheating
When the water pump fails completely, it will not be able to circulate coolant through the engine block. This results in an overheating situation and if not repaired or replaced quickly, can cause additional engine damage like cracked cylinder heads, pushed head gaskets, or burnt pistons.

Finally a vid that shows the 2nd most common warning symptom of a water pump going out! The 1st most common, coolant visiblity. However, THIS ONE is the most alarming due to the "chirping and knocking." Often... with no coolant leak visible! THIS can be mistaken for a bearing failure on a cam/piston rod/ or crankshaft. Bravo, you nailed it!

Thanks for this. Been watching vids for longer than I care to admit in the hopes of finding one where the sound is identical to my situation. This is that. Car runs perfect otherwise. No CEL's, no overheating, etc. This is what we suspected, but there's no easy way to test that I know of without removing the manifold and lots of other goodies, (2005 Chrysler 300 2.7L). I'll probably get the whole timing chain kit so I can redo everything while I'm there. Thanks again.

Just wanted to follow up by saying that this vid was the only one on CZcams I found which accurately showed my problem as well as the fix. I removed the upper half of the engine to get to the water pump and replace it, which was the problem. Also replaced cam chains, tensioners, manifold gaskets, etc. The only tricky bit was setting the timing and not allowing the cams to rotate. Do your homework if you undertake this job. If I can do it, anybody here can. Thanks again for the video. It was absolute gold.

ford 4.6 triton 98 xl 4x4..... loud screeching chirping madness... loud gravel in a barrel or some kind of gurgle slash grind noise... both very loud... also when cruising down the road I felt a motor performance change just slightly... very little and only like 5 times. My power and performance is good. Only history I can say is I bought a lower intake 4 years ago after putting blue devil block sealer in the cooling system after a really good flush and its still holding the leak back. lost a lil water twice in 2 years but then after not driving it much I got a chirp... then a squeal screech... then the rolling rock in a barrel sound... both just get louder and idle seems rougher. parked a month ago and now I have a water pump from ford to go with the lower intake. Problem is I dont have 800 bucks to pay a pro for the intake but I can do the water pump... It is the pump right? sounds like bearing and or more... maybe a pulley? All i know is my water pump pulley appears to bobbing in and out as it turns at normal idle speed... ANTY HELP WOULD BE GREAT

We changed O2 sensor, spark plugs, and ignition coils in past few months (car almost 200k so needed and was scheduled anyways). Both of them told me they didn't hear anything and I was scarred and didn't trust the car anymore 😡. Was in a drive through and started to see steam, pulled over and let car cool but it wouldn't start again. Got car towed to mechanic and now the water pump has gone bad. All of a sudden??? I thought I heard something like the above noise,
    though much milder.
I took it to the mechanic. He and his colleagues
listened carefully, but they said it was normal, no
real abnormal noise, nothing to worry about, my
    water pump was still good.
They said that if the water pump bearings are bad,
most of the time, it will leak too.
Water temperature seems alright, the mechanic said
    so too.
Took it to another mechanic, and they said the same too.
I tried listening myself these few days, and think I do
hear some faint metallic clattering noise, possibly
    the water pump bearing.
If it is the bearing, and the wear is mild, can the
water pump be used for some time yet ?
This is because this is a front wheel drive. To replace
the water pump, they would have to take out the timing
belt, etc as well, since the pump is behind the belt.
Quite a hassle, work time, and of course hefty labour
    charges as well.
Water temperature seems alright, the mechanic said
    so too.
Both the alternator belt (which also drives the water pump)
and the airconditioner belt have been replaced.
The pump has done about 60,000 km, or about 36,000 miles.
    Installed about five years ago.

Check your coolant in your radiator and overflow tank. Also when was the last time you changed your thermostat? If it’s been a long time it’s a good idea to change it and use an OE thermostat if you can.

It can cause a rattling sound making your engine sound noisy aswell I thought the engine was bad but it was the pump the engine will work harder causing ruff idle fix this right away most engines are made of aluminum if overheated can cause warping of the cylinder head leading to headgasket problems
