Mice on Venus is my favorite song from this game too. It reminds me of my oldest world which got corrupted in like 1.10 or something sadly D:. I tried burying myself in the ground with holes on the side like a log it was night near a river in the rain. It was a dark forest. But I remember a creeper getting down and I was so confused how it got in. Hilarious moments like that.

Also idk if anybody else agrees with it but Minecraft needs to take inspiration from terraria when it comes to multiplayer servers terraria is simple yet complicated for randoms to get into. Minecraft’s problem is not “bloating”, it’s the exact opposite, it’s shallowness. Bloating suggests that there is an over abundance of something, yet Minecraft’s problem is not that it has an over abundance of content, it’s that the content is lacking in depth. It is in fact the _lack_ of a feature that is the problem.

    • @therealbottomdweller
      @therealbottomdweller  Před 3 měsíci +136

Actually thats a better way to word it! Nice! I was thinking of the idea of “As wide as an ocean, as deep as a puddle” So I went with bloating because I imagined the wide part not the deep part. Silly me! Thanks for watching though!

    • @Nephelangelo
      @Nephelangelo Před 3 měsíci +67

It’s also worth noting that we learned a couple weeks ago from leaks out of Mojang that the reason the update content has been so slim for the last several years is because Microsoft is deliberately limiting the amount of content and changes Mojang is allowed to make to the game, for fear of making the game “bloated” or changing anything about the core game. So Mojang has to go through a bureaucratic nightmare in order to add anything new or make any changes to the gameplay. I think there is also a bit of a miscommunication and a feedback loop between Microsoft, Mojang and the community where these complaints about “bloating” wind up being interpreted as “the game has too much content”, thus causing Mojang to add even less, with very little features that actually effect the gameplay, which then causes the community to complain even more about there being too much useless stuff, making Microsoft think they have to add even less. The only way I see this can be changed is if Microsoft eliminates the bureaucratic red tape that is debilitating Mojang’s development process, and allow Mojang to develop the game freely with the community. Minecraft has such immense potential, and even after 15 years, I don’t think it’s even begun to scratch the surface of it. @@therealbottomdweller

No no no. You’ve got it completely wrong. The whole point of minecraft was that it was simple, and that’s why it was good. You are now trying to add more content, more useless features that nobody is going to use, more nonsense. By adding more features, you remove the whole reason why the game is so nostalgic. You want more things, therefore more mob votes to be exploited by players, and that’s not it man. Everyone is playing too fast, unlocking the best gear too soon, and wondering why they have nothing to do. It’s about taking your time and enjoying the journey, not the destination. That’s what makes minecraft good.

The reason why c418's music doesn't "intrude" and distract you is because it only keeps iterating on the same few melodies and chord structure and doesn't leave you with moments of silence or pure ambience. That allows it to stay more in the backround because you'd notice a large change like that. Is also why they slowly build up to get you used to hearing it, being as non intrusive as possible. Them being faster and using less instruments also really helps. Being faster allows it to finish measures quicker and allow you to get comfortable with how they sound quicker. If you were to increase the speed of the beginning of the newer theme "Stand Tall" by like 1.75% then it automatically sounds more like minecraft, at least until it changes a bit in.
The entire mood of the game was just different back then. You had no way to play with others, you were alone surviving and exploring a world. The music had to sound sad, hopeful or encouraging you to keep building or to keep building up resources. The new themes fit the genre of the game, an open world game. They don't however fit the feeling of minecraft specifically.

My biggest issue with the Smithing Templates and the Netherite Upgrade is that it’s not a coherent concept within the Minecraft universe. What in the world is a “template”? Is it a blueprint? Is it a magic stone? They should have just called it a Rune or Runestone, then it would at least have some magical fantasy world conceptualization around the idea. ( 1/2 ) This video got me feeling things man... That ending almost made me tear up, and it's interesting how much history we share.
Much like you, I started in 2011, went over to my cousin’s house once and I distinctly remember his mum saying ‘He’s upstairs playing mindcraft’ which I still chortle at to this day. After that I was obsessed with those exact Survival Island and Shadow of Israphel series, but at the time I didn’t have the game, so I genuinely thought that flying ships, talking npcs and storylines is what the game actually WAS. That right there I'd say is what made it so magical at the start. Internet forums were still early, so most people genuinely had no clue what the game offered as it wasn't possible to dissect it and learn every detail. We had no pc or laptop, so the Xbox 360 edition was what we played. And without fail, every day before and after school I would hop on with my sister or school friends and work on a city, or start a new survival world, look at patch notes and simply have a whale of a time without a care in the world. All the while my parents would fall asleep on the sofa while listening to its music.
Heck, as cringe as it sounds I wouldn't have any of the friends I do now without it. Little old year 7 me, feeling lonely at secondary school while eating lunch in the bistro overheard two others talking about the latest minecraft update. I shimmied over to them, and to this day still 9 years later I am still good friends with them, we still play minecraft together, and have just started up yet another vanilla server.
Updates felt revolutionary, mostly down to the fact that my smol brain could look at the new horses and would treat it like the second coming of Jesus. Every tiny thing felt completely new, but there was always that air of mystery. Now though, it definitely does feel different. The game has such a large community, with so many ways to express themselves that Mojang now have to consider the impact of an update on peaceful players, builders, redstoners and so on. It's complex, and I feel like that desire to please the majority has led to them slowing down updates to be more careful with what is added, to their detriment. Back then I guarantee they added stuff just because they wanted to.
Over the last year, I have taken up modding minecraft, and as such I've had the opportunity to talk with other well known modders as well as join in conversations with devs themselves about the game's design and approach to new updates. One of the two main reasons why updates take so long to produce now, according to those modders and some developers, is that any new update is designed to incorporate as much of the playerbase as possible.
At the moment, kingbdogz (the one who led the development of the warden, deep dark, trial chambers and amour trims at the moment) has expressed how he is aiming to find ways to provide greater extrinsic motivators to the game. This is a great example of this community split. The crux of design issues that lead to the hesitancy to simply push new stuff is just how these things are planned to integrate with the different playerbases.
While I'll admit some decisions like cutting the foliage updates in the wild update has no real relation to this, and it's exemption makes little sense, this philosophy can be seen in other parts of the game as a whole. One of the hot topics that is brought up a lot is people wanting progression to be deeper, more like terraria. At the moment it doesn't take long to get full diamond tools, and only marginally longer to get them enchanted. The smithing tablet is really one of the only barriers in terms of gear progression. But one thing developers have brought up numerous times is how a potential progression update could harm other player groups. Using terraria as an example, I do like it's progression because the game is built around it. But if I ever want to build anything substantial, i basically have to wait until endgame to get the tools that let me clear space effective enough for it to not be tedious. if minecraft had forced bossfights that gated progression, builders would be forced to do combat, peaceful players won't be able to progress at all, and further balance would need to be made to tune the difficulty of those bosses based on the available gear at the time. And once those bosses are taken out, they would be left behind and eventually power creep would make future fights a cakewalk. Meanwhile the smithing tablet can still be obtained in peaceful mode, people can avoid fights by building or mining around the structure, and combat enjoyers can still enjoy a tough fight in the bastion with gear as the reward. This way, every player can enjoy it, even if the individual experience may be lessened because of it.
There are definitely still some features that are more specialised to a certain group, but in general I'd say that this has become a more prevalent focus for them over the last few years. Even something like the crafter, while yes it is a redstone item, can still be utilised by almost all player groups. Combat users could set up a simple clock to autocraft combat items, builders can make slabs, and redstoners no doubt will find some incredibly groundbreaking machine that alters the way people play the game. Obervers are much the same.

      ( 2/2 )
Overall it seems they are trying to be a lot more careful. Not only does every update need rigorous testing to accommodate all the different types of computer hardware, but they also need to consider bedrock parity, networking, console inputs, moddability and more. The aforementioned considerations for how something affects a playerbase so varied in preference has reportedly slowed down a lot of what they wish to implement. They do often lay the foundations for future updates, for instance a minor version in 1.16 or 15 introduced vertical biome splits based on Y axis, which was what allowed the caves and cliffs update to exist at all, yet when that was added it served no purpose. Even if the updates may be reduced in scope, I personally feel like they've all had aspects to them that sparks my imagination once more.
I'd say 1.16 was the last update that felt truly magical, 1.17 and 18 was huge for me as it made caving far more enjoyable, as I still look at cave structures and picture the building potential it offers. And while small, and missing a lot of what I hoped it would add, the wild update's deep dark and ancient city opened up so much potential in what could come in the future while offering a gameplay experience so very different to what we had in any structure before that I still consider it a solid update looking solely at what was added. I do still feel like the updates aren't quite giving their all, but I do still personally enjoy what has been added.
The game's music though, still sticks to me no matter what. TO.. THIS ... DAY the soundtrack is still my most listened to set of albums on spotify every single year. Listening to Dreiton, Taswell or Aria Math in that creative world on xbox ties emotions to a piece that no other song has managed to emulate since. People have those songs, - you know, the ones that their parents used to play them, or ones that spoke to them on a higher level, to me the Minecraft soundtrack evokes that feeling of 'anything is possible, go wherever you want to go, be whoever you want to be', and thus hearing it just instills a sense of power and control that is tough to explain. Alpha is such a masterpiece it still makes me tear up listening to it as to me it perfectly symbolises the ups and downs for life itself, our perceptions of the game and the very heart of a minecraft world.
Ultimately our thoughts on music seem very alike. lena Raine's Wild update ost is mixed, but the nether soundtrack absolutely slaps. Her caves and cliffs one i'd say does manage to capture a little more of that initial Beta and Alpha style, as songs like infinite amethyst have a similar buildup and drop to Taswell or Aria Math, and One more day is probably one of my favourites of that specific album, although other pieces from that album do stray a little bit. Arron Cherof's seems to me like a mix of them both but still ends up being too hectic at times. While Bromeliad starts of with some subtlety, that synth can take some of that focus away from the game. Funnily enough, I'd say that beyond Lena's 1.16 album, kumi Tanoika's work feels like it understands the importance of rest and space in the composition the most, as they hardly ever get in the way but can provide the emotional weight to provide some sort of feeling to what's happening in game. However, nothing will top their ace. C418 sticks to me to this day on an almost spiritual level that is hard to describe, and while the other soundtracks still *sound* good, it's almost an allegory for the game's change in approach. Taswell pumps me up beyond belief, sparks the imagination and reminds me of good times. But the thing is, I personally still feel like I'm living those good times.
Despite all these things, despite the reduced update pace, despite the over saturation of '100 days in...!' content, despite the manipulative servers and complete dissection of what the game contains, I am in a unique position as the game is still fun. While I no longer have that sense of discovery, as I know every loot pool, structure and spawn condition, what is left is that feeling of wanting to make the world what I want it to be - to embrace that holy slogan from the game's trailer, and simple do what I wanna do. While I might not be able to feel that discovery like I could back then, I still feel it is possible to CREATE something worth discovering. Channels like Fwhip or MythicalSausage go to great depths to explain the storytelling behind their worlds, and I feel that is the perfect way to inject new life into the game. I have learned the game inside and out, so creating something new is how I find fun. Create something that could instill those same emotions as you did when you first got the game, do what the yogscast did and create your own story that has the potential to captivate other users.
This was an awful lot of writing I know, but I guess that's what minecraft does to you once it's ingrained into your very soul. However before I post, I will say this...
I work in retail, in a small family run shop in my local town. Selling sweets, veggies, fruits, all the classic supermarket stuff. Every day at 3:30 the school rush starts. And every day, almost without fail, I see kids with Creeper T shirts, steve backpacks, foam swords and pickaxes, and I hear them talking about the game like I did back then. So while you and I may have grown up, witnessed an era and embraced it into our very being, there are still those who are only just getting into it. While the landscape is different and they will experience things differently to what we did, they are only just starting that journey. it's hardly a game at this point, it itself is an experience, a community, a state of being. And I could have wished for nothing better than to have been a part of it, and still be a part of it. I hope that in whatever you choose to do next, you manage to reignite that spark and find the joy in it once again.

(2/2) When it started to turn day, I remember breaking out of my shack and getting jump scared by a creeper. I survived with 2 hearts and my little dirt shack was almost completely blown up. After fixing up my shack, I decide to go mining. Because there were no caves nearby, I decided to dig straight down, a classic mistake any new player makes. I didn't fall in lava like you would think, instead I feel into a cave and got blown up by creeper that I didn't see. I lost almost all the wood that was on the island because I chopped down all of trees to fix my shack and build a single chest. Because I chopped down all of the trees on my island, I completely broke all of wooden planks that were used to fix my shack (I was unaware that saplings replanted trees). After making myself a new set of tools, I decided to make my house completely out of cobblestone, with the exception of a couple windows made with glass blocks. After I rebuilt my shack, I decided to venture out with a boat to find more trees. After sailing what felt like thousands of blocks, I landed ashore and found a forest. When I was chopping down trees, night fell, and I got shot to dead by a skeleton because I had no armor. This death really pissed me off and I stopped playing for the day.
I don't remember much after my first time playing on that world because it has been almost 11 years, but I do remember it took me 2 weeks in real life to get a full set of iron armor and it also took me a month to find diamonds. I eventually moved on from that world and played another survival world because I found it a pain in the ass to have to venture out every time I wanted to gather resources. I left off on that world with only iron armor and tools, a cobblestone house with a wooden roof, a small wheat farm by the ocean, and a mine going down to bedrock.
Even though my first world never developed much, I'm grateful to still be able play that world on my PC today. Not many people still have access to their first Minecraft world. Recovering that humble little world a couple years ago made me tear up. After I recovered my first world from that old laptop's hard drive, I expanded and redecorated my house, made a better wheat farm, made a enchanting room, made mob grinder, got diamond gear, and went to the Nether. Still haven't beaten the Ender Dragon on that world yet because I am in no rush to do everything.

A: update the end with new biomes, ores, structures, mobs and trees, similar to the nether update
B: add a new dimension that you actually need to visit to beat the game. Wouldn’t it be cool if you had to get a sponge from and elder guardian, a nether star from the wither, and the dragon egg from the elder dragon, then go into the portal in the deep dark, traverse many biomes until you find a structure that you put the items into and it spawns a new final boss?

Both Beta 1.7 and full release 1.6 are the only versions I play to this day. When I envision minecraft in my head, its those versions I see. Not what it is nowadays. Even when with friends, modern minecraft doesn't FEEL like minecraft.
It's not even really about growing up for me. I play with friends on beta 1.7 and full release 1.6 all the time, literally played yesterday for 6 hours with a friend, and it's amazing. Implementing things like blocks and items takes no time at all - the larger parts are textures, mechanics and QA, and even these shouldn't take more than a month for an update the size of 1.16. This means there is significant managerial overhead paralyzing the development process. Either people on top demanding constant redesigns or a bunch of suits trying to optimize everything without understanding it. I can guarantee you that at any point in development, the majority of the team either spins their wheels or does meaningless busywork.

the whole foundations of minecraft was like legos: simple blocks that dont do that much alone but can be used for infinite possibilities. Each new block was carefully integrated into the game in a logical way. The devs tought about the uses of a certain block before adding it. New blocks however feel… modded! They dont interact with the rest of the game and have only one use. Copper for example should’ve never been added. All the recipes that use copper could’ve very well be gold or iron and so, mojang is forced to put copper into every new recipe to give it a use but it’s not enough…

I strongly disagree with your take on copper. It was always mainly supposed to be a decorative building block and it’s one of my favorites at that. The fact that there are crafting recipes using it doesn’t mean that it is copper’s main purpose.
Pretty much the same goes for the majority of new blocks.
However I understand how it might feel for someone who isn’t that concerned about building, from this perspective many new additions are kinda out of place.

They do weird ambitious marketing things but on the other hand have to play it safe more than they used to too, both on gameplay incidentals and technical complexity. A lot of content is probably half way on the cutting room floor, I wouldn't be surprised if bigger changes start coming back that they've worked on behind the scenes without wanting to over promise too much about - marketing noise in the meantime has to justify its existance with strange votes.

Adding various effects to make your already pretty unkillable character even more unkillable would make the game more boring imo, I think its just cool to get to customize the armor I wear all the time. For Mojang to add ways to make your character even more busted, they also have to add tougher challenges to justify wanting to make your character stronger.

Even though I don’t have the exact same experience with the game as you (I haven’t played the new versions, different servers, game modes, etc), I can see and agree with your points.
I stopped playing around (or just before) 1.9. To me, the game started to change after 1.8 when they started adding useless blocks like granite, diorite, etc. Before that I always wanted them to add a ton of new stuff, but looking at how the game is now, I wish it was simple again. It’s weird, because, though I never played it myself, I always enjoyed the Tekkit modpack which added a ton of new structures, mobs and mechanics whereas the new structures in vanilla Minecraft feel very shallow, uninteresting and useless.
I often find myself wanting to play Minecraft again but it just doesn’t feel the same. I do think there’s a little bit of nostalgia that comes with it, though, but I still agree with what you said.

IMO Mending has two varyingly valid reasons for its existence: 1, as a band aid fix for the scuffed Anvil mechanics, and 2, for multiplayer. It makes things like Elytras and Ancient Debris last indefinitely, so less of it is required to be mined. This means people who start late on a multiplayer server aren't put on a massive disadvantage because all the Debris and Elytras have been looted already for like 20,000 blocks.
