    I was lucky enough to work with him once - I was part of his support act at a gig back in the early nineties - He had always been a big hero of mine, and he turned out to be an incredibly friendly person(I knew he would) - I'm so glad I got to meet him

      I always feel that beneath the adulation (and his music was brilliant ) , there was a tale of a slow descent into alcoholism with Jake, and I'm guessing that came with the usual temper and potential for violence. His drink sodden end, was certainly not an edifying spectacle. Hard but there it was.

    The difference between Jake and other comedy songwriters of this genre who he is at risk of being lumped in with is a certain sensibility. It's not cynical or throwaway. It's full of feeling and engagement.

      +Banacek60 Chord Because Trolls are everywhere, and most have no sense of culture or appreciation of someone (almost) unique..(Georges Brassens was his big hero. I live in France, and they are very similar. Both were giants of chanson).Not enough Jake out there.

    Lyrics:
    The Castleford Ladies' Magical Circle meets tonight,
    In an upstairs aspidistra'd room that's lit by candlelight,
    Where Elizabeth Jones and Lily O'Grady
    And three or four more married ladies
    Practice every week unspeakable pagan rites.
    Dressed in their Sunday coats and their flowerpot hats,
    Respectable middle-aged ladies - running to fat, at that -
    There's Elizabeth Jones and Lily O'Grady
    And three or four more married ladies,
    Each with a Woolworth's broomstick and a tabby cat.
    But they don't waste time with a ouija board or a seance now and again, no.
    And three or four more married ladies
    Prefer to be tickled by the whiskery chins of bogey men.
    Their husbands potter at snooker down the club,
    Unaware of the devilish jiggery-poke and rub-a-dub-dub,
    While Elizabeth Jones and Lily O'Grady
    And three or four more married ladies
    Are frantically dancing naked for Beelzebub.
    And after the witches' picnic and the devil's grog,
    After their savage pantings, their hysterical leap-frog, well,
    And three or four more married ladies
    Go back home for cocoa and the Epilogue.
    So be careful how you go of a Saturday night:
    If you see a little old lady passing by, it very well might be
    Or one of those satanical ladies.
    Their eyes are wild and bright, their cheekbones all alight.
    Don't go where they invite,
    Because the Castleford Ladies' Magical Circle meets tonight.

    More than 15 years after his death and still a sad, lingering loss of talent. Did you know he was recording his 2nd album at Abbey Road in the studio nextdoor to the Beatles at the same time in 1970? As talented as the Beatles are, it seems some musical ear or other forgot to listen in to Jake, doesn't it?

    • @philevans3257
      @philevans3257 Před 8 lety

      The Beatles were never together in a recording studio after 1969.......

    • @nudesoftheworld

      Floyd recorded 'See Emily Play' at the same time the Beatles were recording next door. Different story but same punch; the Beatles are overrated.

    • @blackmore4
      @blackmore4 Před 7 lety +1

      Thackray's 2nd LP ('Jake's Progress') came out in '69 (not 1970) so maybe The Beatles were doing 'Abbey Road' when he was recording it.

    • @blackmore4
      @blackmore4 Před 7 lety +2

      Interesting comment about comparing Thackray and The Beatles. But, basically, you can't ;)
      I too find it extremely weird that Thackray wasn't more successful and that he's not held in much higher esteem. Many have pointed out that if he'd been born in France, he'd be stamped into the French cultural consciousness as a legend. And, of course, there's no debate, he was a waaaaaaay more gifted lyricist than any Lennon and McCartney or any of the 'rock' songwriters (in my opinion, Dylan included) but... he could never have come up with the soundscape on 'Revolver' or 'Sgt Pepper' or written the music for 'Helter Skelter' or 'Happiness Is a Warm Gun'. And nor would he have wanted to. Pretty much the same reason why, even if they _had_ heard his genius, The Beatles wouldn't have wanted to sound like Jake either.
