It is your Aunt Grace, Leotyne Price, Marian Anderson, and Kathleen Battle that inspired me take opera voice lessons and fortified my love of opera. To see and hear your Aunt and the other Black Female Opera singers brought and still brings great joy to my heart. 🥰
I enjoy all aspects of music and singing. But when a female singers are producing such ringing, brilliant and commanding high notes, it thrills me most. Just the acoustic phenomenon itself gives me chills.
On a beau dire....elle est et elle restera la Carmen du siecle....le phrase, la ligne de chant, elle a ete a la bonne ecole....Incomparable Grace Bumbry....une des plus grandes....
what amazes me is she hardly looks like she's opening her mouth very wide or taking huge breaths yet this grande sound emits form her! props to her =))
Wow! That slight but ever so dramatic change in her facial expression in the 1st 10 secs speaks volumes about her talent, independent of her magical voice. What a beauty! And does anyone notice her foot tapping at 0:09 s? Notice how the heel hits the ground right on the downbeats but rises with a sort of rubato haste, just ahead of the tempo of the orchestra. She's basically dancing a rubato and it's so appropriate! Such subtlety is the mark of a born musician! They feel music from head to toe.
She's wonderful it's not often that a singer makes me smile as their charm becomes ever more apparent.Vickets voice is fantastic and he shows his unease and uncertainty as she teases and disorientates him
I really love her voice!!!!!! The first time I saw the play was with her and i fall in love!!!! Now, it is no more in youtube... What kind of world is this!!!
Anubhab Chatterjee Joan Sutherland never sang Carmen (fortunately I might add, even speaking as a die-hard fan. she didn't have the creamy, sultry, delicious lower register necessary to pull it off)
+Jason Black Actually, that's not quite correct. Sutherland sang as a dramatic coloratura, but her physiologic voice type was DRAMATIC MEZZO. She actually had quite a dark and rich lower register (check out her Voi che sapete), with no lower head-midrange break. However, for obvious reasons she did not develop this part of her voice, so it never had much compression or brilliance to it. But yes, her Carmen would have been horrific, for temperament mis-match alone!
with all due respect, that's ridiculous. Sutherland is clearly most comfortable at the top of the soprano range. she is about as mezzo as Cher is coloratura soprano
+Anubhab Chatterjee Callas was great at Carmen just like all the roles she took on... but she wasn't a mezzo so I think a darker color voice soprano or mezzo would do the role more justice!
she is so beautiful! i love to see it when a singer has the person they are singing with compelled and at their finger tips..lol..it was fun to watch! thanks!
Congrats to your wonderful auntie!! one of the best Carmens ever!! :-) the other 2 in considerations in my opinion are Marilyn Horne and Elena Obrastzova. Greetings from Budapest! :-)
@isabellanova007 Actually, there were. Especially in southern Spain, where there was a significant Muslim influence from North Africa for quite some time, it wouldn't surprise me if some had managed to remain. Also, the opera was written in 1852, rather late for there *not* to be black people in Europe.
BRAVA. absolutely stunning. And whoever said she doesn't look "gitana", please watch the film "Latcho Drom", from India to North Africa to Ireland to Spain, the Roma Diaspora is gloriously beautiful and diverse. One love.
My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.
She is wonderful, maybe the best Carmen, but how is it possible to forget to mention the...."detail" that the conductor was Herbert von Karajan and the orchestra was the Vienna Philharmonic?!?
It's amazing how this is actually my Aunt Grace!!! :) I'm so honored!
She is amazing
Omg your aunt is an opera legend and i love her😊

Oh oui la Carmen du siecle
she fits her part perfectly! Her voice + the way she moves and looks is SO Carmen :)
I love it!♥
what amazes me is she hardly looks like she's opening her mouth very wide or taking huge breaths yet this grande sound emits form her!

Rest in peace Queen 😢 ❤👑😇🙏🏻
It's from Salzburg Festival, 1966, under H. von Karajan's baton. Jon Vickers, Mirella Freni and Justino Diaz. An outstanding performance.
She's wonderful
it's not often that a singer makes me smile as their charm becomes ever more apparent.Vickets voice is fantastic and he shows his unease and uncertainty as she teases and disorientates him
My favourite movie-opera from childhood! Grace is flawless as Carmen!
her sopranish top notes are amazing
RIP Amazing Grace.
Thank you, Mama Grace. You will be missed and cherished always. 🎼🎶🥀🎶💔
She was Callas with a sense of humor, so to speak. The Carmen of Carmens.
No. She sings much better then Callas.
yes she was and i saw her do this live as a young boy
No one will ever top Grace Bumbry metallic quality ❤🎼
The Best Carmen
_...incomparable..._ ❤...
I really love her voice!!!!!!
The first time I saw the play was with her and i fall in love!!!!
Now, it is no more in youtube...
What kind of world is this!!!
There's some great cosmic injustice in someone being so talented AND so beautiful. Harrumph.
This is awesome. I even like the tenor!
her voice is so carmen. She really delivers the role of carmen bcoz, aside from her voice, but to her sensuality.
i love this song , and the amazing voice , shes a great mezzo
OMG... I love her... And those eyes!!
She is one of the best singers.I love her voice!
Hermosa voz los dos!! creo que es una de las mejores versiones que he visto =)

Maria callas is the best. So is joan sutherland. Have u forgotten them

+Anubhab Chatterjee the can be one of the greatest but I was sayng about carmen - not singer...
Life is short and art is long.
Its amazing how comfortable she is lying down and sitting while singing the way she did! Wow! Going from Mezzo to Soprano was a verry wise choice!
She is THE BEST Carmen! :)))
No, maria callas is!!!!
+Anubhab Chatterjee Maria Callas may sing Seguidilla perfect, but Grace Bumbry does the perfect Habanera (... we all have our own opinions)
+Anubhab Chatterjee Callas was great at Carmen just like all the roles she took on... but she wasn't a mezzo so I think a darker color voice soprano or mezzo would do the role more justice!
Yes
+Anubhab Chatterjee brumby is the best
Je l'ai en DVD.... De loin la meilleure version de Carmen...
Tout comme elle fut une des meilleures Vénus.
I agree she makes this seem so easy...making it her own (interpretation) makes it seem dam easy. Wow to the Wow!
A unique Carmen.Splendid.
I've always loved Marilyn Horne but this was smooth and clear and like Sottosopra Voce said, nuanced. Just awesome! I'm a Grace Bumbry fan forever!
What I love about her as Carnen is that she transcendent and she has a strong understanding of time and place. She is a woman from another era

You're right about that. Meanwhile, at the Met for the last few years, we are suffering through some dreadful Carmens.
I really love Denyce Graves' Carmen.
Spellbindingly beautiful! she takes musical pleasure to a diferent level.

gracy brumby y su exquisita voz interpretando su rol en carmen de bisset
@isabellanova007 Actually, there were. Wonderful in every way!!
Oh she looks so sweet while singing!
Beautiful AND talented.
If Karajan WAS conducting, that explains the deadly tempo. GOD. But it's nice to hear her singing well, I never heard her sing well even once.
Brava Grace! 🤩💖
My first opera was Bumbry in Carmen in SF in 1967... she was perfection... I was kinda disappointed years later to read her comments that "... Carmen is the same sickness for the Black Mezzo that Aida is for the Black soprano." Alas.
