  • If you don’t want to buy used and you can’t spend more than $200, the GMC Denali Road bike or similar Kent Road bikes may be your best choice. It is likely the most reliable walmart bike you can buy.
I put hundreds of miles on mine over the years and while upgrading to the likes of Giant, Trek and Bianche brought a huge difference in speed and quality the old GMC never really let me down.

One of the best budget bikes ever made!! 249$ Canadian and 270$ in upgraded parts turned into one of the best and fun bikes I ever ridden. My carbon bike which was expensive barely gets any usage because there is no fun factor like the GMC denali!!. I do custom bike setups and to me there is no doubt the weight is heavier but you need to setup this bike for maximum rolling speed ( hubs, bottom bracket) add ceramic ball bearings to the back hub freewheel cup and cones.

I have a Denali 6061 that I bought back in 2013? I actually have it next to me right now because the springs on the back brakes popped off on my last ride and I needed to fix them.
I quite enjoy this bike for getting around town. I'm not anywhere near a "pro cyclist" but I do enjoy a good 10-15 mile ride now and again.
I have noticed a few problems with this bike, one of them is the braking system. I can't seem to ever get the brakes to align evenly, one is always a little more tight than the other. Sometimes this creates a drag problem on the wheel. It's not a major problem, and doesn't really affect the ride too much, but if you're a perfectionist it's something to consider.
Second problem is the wheels themselves, they never sit perfectly center. I'm still using the stock wheels that came with the bike. There's always a very slight wobble. Again, nothing that makes it unusable, but combine that with pads that don't stay aligned and you get a bit more drag on every rotation.
As far as coasting goes, again, I'm not a pro cyclist. I don't ride with pro cyclers. But I do ride with my wife in her "beach cruiser" style bicycle with gears. I probably pedal about 10% of the time that she does. With a slightly negative grade, I don't need to touch the pedals at all to maintain a 12-15 mph speed. When I ride solo on my 10 mile circuits I average about 11 mph and i very rarely push myself, that's just comfortable riding speed. Elevation gain of 265 feet and top speed of 20 mph. Nothing impressive. I live in Texas where a +/-2% grade is considered a "hill."
I bought this bike while on a walk about 7 years ago. I used to walk everywhere, because I had a pretty uncluttered life so I could spare the extra few hours a week walking for basic necessities. One day, it was getting dark and I had about a 2 hour walk home, so I walked into walmart and picked this bike off the rack because it was the cheapest. I believe I paid $99 for it, and I've never seen it for sale again in store since then.
I rode this bike to work for 2 years, 6 days a week. Reduced a 2 hour walk down to 25-35 minutes, depending on wind (one way). Well worth the expense.
The chain is a bit worn at this point. Could use replacing. The gears need indexing pretty often to keep the shifting smooth if you change gears frequently. But once you get the bike all tidied up, its quite silent. You will definitely learn a lot about maintenance with this bike, that's for sure. Especially if you buy it preassembled off the rack.

I just came across one on OfferUp for $150 OBO. It’s a 6061 series and not in the best shape. Thank you for this video

For those that are curious I averaged just over 15mph in the 2005 El Tour De Tucson when this bike was completely stock. That’s about 4 to 5mph slower than my Trek Madone was in 2008. Keep in mind though Id improved as a rider in that time so the actual difference between this and a $4000 bike is likely only 3mph on average. That’s impressive.

Nice to hear that, I have the black 48 cm frame GMC Denali and have customized it for my ridding style. Added some custom tricks and the best is when I pretend I am struggling to keep up with a 5000$ carbon and then I turn up the magic and just drop them lol. Nothing is more hilarious to me then to see some one who is a well seasoned rider get completely trashed by a 400$ bike ( with the added upgrades and tricks setup). I am working on a video for this bike review since I have not updated the video reviews for it and how it is setup now. I go over the issues with the bike, how to fix them and how to actually take advantage of those issues to make you faster!!. Yes you will not be able to keep up with the Canyon Aero bikes or Giant TCR's of the world, but you also can buy a vehicle and have this cheap bike at the same time.

Had mine since 2009 and its 2021 now, it looks new because I take care of it. If the goal is to exercise, this bike achieves that. Perfect deal for me. And the best color too, vibrant blue.

I bought this bike in 2013 when I was first married, and we couldn't afford a second car for me to get to work (after a year of cycling to work I saved enough money to buy a car). I still have the bike today, and use it often. Everything is still stock on it, but I am wondering if it is worth upgrading a few components on it to make a better ride, or to consider purchasing a different (used better quality) bike? If I were to replace components on it, what are the top 3 components that you would recommend to replace?

I own a Denali 6160. The tire is stripped but the tube is still good. They are the original tires and I'm wondering if these are tire and tubes in one?

On mine they were standard clincher tires with a separate tubes. Best thing to do is take the tire off and see what you’ve got on there.
