@@daviddulom8258 Anchelotti is too negative for me, his style of play isn't great. People can talk about Gareth playing 2 CDMs or a back 3 sometimes which is annoying but England's style of play is certainly a lot more progressive. That and the last time England hired a top class Italian manager who'd won it all at club level really backfired.

The potential success of this England is entirely down to the players and their motivation it's that simple. Gareth just needs to keep them focused and they can do it. Kane,Sterling,Calvert-Lewin,Grealish,Foden, Rashford, Greenwood, Maddison, Bellingham - it's ridiculous how much talent this squad has.

Gareth Southgate is fast becoming my favourite British manager. He was great for Middlesbrough (despite having zero managing experience)... he was superb for the U21 team... he's brilliant now.
He did manage to relegate Middlesbrough, something they’ve arguably yet to recover from. I have always liked him as a man and he was a very good player in his day but I didn’t rate him as a club manager. Credit to him though, he’s done a good job and there seems to be a great spirit. Shows how much I know!

I've been watching England for over 35 years. This man has completely transformed the culture of the national team to get it back to arguably the best it's ever been. He got to a world cup semi (6 months after taking over) playing a new system without some of the players he would have played. They've become more consistently good than at any time since the 60's under his watch and have finally caught up with the technique, tactics and game management of the best foreign teams. People can get into him all they want.. they don't know what they're talking about. He's been a gift to England and with a bit of luck and keeping the right players fit he might just win something in the next 2/3 tournaments. In Gareth we trust.

the people out for his neck need to relax, he deserves the chance to go to the euros. Considering what he’s done after the disappointment in 2016, and reaching a semi final in his first major tournament. I mean we all were singing his name in 2018. Unless he does awful, Why does that have to change?
Lads give Southgate more of a chance. World Cup 2018 was incredible, I don't care how easy the route was, it was amazing. If we have a shocker in the euros then, sure, maybe then, but he's not actually failed at his job yet. Nobody thought England were getting to the semis before the world cup and we did. Let's see how the euros go and get behind Southgate and the team.

@@iccaruuss yeah but this is my point. Before the world cup people were saying England would reach ro16 max and a good run would be the quarters. We didn't have a top, top squad in 2018 and Southgate hadn't managed a major tournament before. He has now had time and we've got an incredible group of players. If this goes wrong, he probably won't stick around anyway, this is a new English golden generation. Don't be silly and say things like that, though, because we weren't expected to beat those teams and we damn near had Croatia too. Both Belgium games didn't matter, we fielded weakened squads as one we had qualified already and the other was a 3rd place play off. Come on, man.
England have improved massively they actually play some nice football and are good in possession, but we don't
have the best players in the world and we don't have the best team in the world, we are a top ten team with good
players, but for England to win a major tournament those players would have to play the games of their lives during
the tournament. and we would also need a very savvy tactical manager that can offer hugely more than Southgate
does. we would need somebody like Diego Simione Bielsa Mourinho or Claudio Ranieri a manager who can get
results tactically playing against teams who are a lot better than the team they manage.
Southgates doing a good job and his best but he hasn't got the tactical know how to manage a team like England
England are going to need that Extra 10% that a savvy manager can bring especially against the teams who are better. you have to be realistic Southgates can't offer England that.

You guys stop the hate on Southgate whatever you want to say about him the players care about playing for England again and England have improved as a side and he is the reason for both, I have to respect him because we villa supporters have known that Grealish can become a world class player even when we were in the championship I also have to shout out sherwood for spotting him before we got relegated and giving him a chance we have been saying he could play for England then but Southgate didn't fancy him even when we got back into the prem he still didn't fancy him and he was playing well but he put down his pride and couldn't deny how good he is and picked him, that takes a big man to do that, I don't think England will win it of course but Southgate will go down in history as one of England's best Managers.
If the English had some more DMs playing for Premier League club, this waistcoat Pulis would play them all

Are you blind? This man is a gift for the FA who have made consistently bad appointments since they sacked Glen Hoddle. He got the job by default and then took a bunch of ok players (and Harry Kane) to a world cup semi final within six months. He's transformed the culture of the national team for the better so the players actually want to play. He's an elite level coach and who played the game at the top level and you're down on him because he isn't a caricature of a football manager. Maybe you'd like Big Sam back.. or Hodgson with Harry Kane on corners and losing goals from our own throw-ins?

why does he play so defensive? englad have tremendous depth of attacking talent, all ready to go through a wall for their team and southgate doesnt use to that his advantage at all??!! it baffles me
Because England weak point is their defence? I get we all wanna see attacking play. I do. It's the reason I hated his awful back 3, but let's not kid ourselves into thinking we can chuck all our attacking players onto the pitch and win tournaments. You need balance. Reality is that if England played a single DM, a naive and young Declan Rice for example, we'd get cut apart. Our defence is piss poor and the big teams would slice us open and progress with ease. People want us to stuff all our best attacking players on as if Sven didn't do the exact same thing. He lobbed all England's best players onto the pitch and there was no balance. Pep plays 4-3-3 with 1 CDM because his defence is rock solid. He doesn't need the extra DM for added security. Last year when Man City were poor defensively, he stuck with the 1 DM. The result? City were cut apart on counters. Any team with pace annihilated them on the counter because a single DM couldn't cover the space and the defence would be horribly exposed. I get we all want to see attacking football, but you have to be smart. England cannot go gung ho. It would be naive and truth be told, the people saying Gareth needs to stop playing 2 DMs are the kind who'd abuse him for doing so and getting us knocked out in the round of 16 when Portugal sliced us open on every counter and scored 5 goals
@@HarvesterYT The reality is that England's weakness is the CB's and a stagnant midfield. Sure, against the better sides I'd be in favour of having 3 at the back if Rice and Bellingham were in midfield, but it's Southgate's inability to adapt against the lesser sides which will get him ultimately sacked. 1-1 with Poland and a leggy midfield but he doesn't make any changes with a midfield of phillips, Rice and Foden.
There is no ying without yang, and England's strength is the fact they can get forward and score goals. As a team you ultimately have to play to your strengths first, and nullify your opponents second.

Not a massive fan of Southgate myself but he is known for using other sports to see how the technical side of things work like American football and cricket so it’s no surprise he using other sports in his own analysis

A lot of people give Gareth stick and rightfully so, but the idea he's super negative has only come around because he trialled a back 3 in the NL last year. And guess what? He switched back to a 4. He's made mistakes, don't get me wrong, but you can clearly see a lot of people don't understand how football works when they want us to chuck all our best attacking players on as if we won't end up super lopsided and get torn apart. Not the best manager around, but you'd think we play 4-4-2 and knock it long the way people talk about him.

As much as he acknowledges the team needs the occasional jolt, I can't quite picture him being that charismatic alpha male when needed. Perhaps I'm wrong; or he's mindful enough to delegate that to an assertive assistant or player. To Southgate's credit, his thoughtful, pressure-relieving methods have yielded marked improvement since Hodgson left. While certain omissions (Bamford, only left-footed CF with high-pressing capabilities) are somewhat baffling and his tactical pulse could be better, he might go one better and guide England to Euro glory. If so, it may somewhat disprove the notion that a gentler approach does not produce success. He seems to be a top bloke who genuinely cares for the lads. Lessons may be learned from capitulations, or I may be completely wrong in the end. Other nations are very strong as well. Time will tell.
If only he were a stronger tactician...
The man has one of the strongest crops of talent ever available to a _Three Lions_ manager. As long as _Southgate_ is at the helm, _England_ will probably remain the most overrated men's national football team on _Earth._

Hasn't played 3 at the back since November. The man clearly realised it was a mistake. Since the world cup he's played a back 3 in 7 games. As for 2 DMs, you need that in a back 4 for security, or you get cut apart. Look at Pep. He plays 1 CDM because his defence is reliable. Last year it wasn't and the 1 CDM couldn't cope, and as such City looked like conceding every time they gave the ball away.
Holding them back? He's the one who has nurtured them and brought them all through.. maybe we should sack him to make you happy and bring in a new coach into a disturbed dressing room and start all over again yeah and ignore all the progress they've made since Hodgson had Harry Kane on corners and was playing Rooney in midfield?
