I work at Panera as a catering coordinator but I agree, the prices are wild. I’ve been with Panera for 9 years now and it got wildly out of hand due to our old CEO trying to incorporate new menu items which meant the prices had to be hiked up. We have a new CEO that made this new menu and it’s the biggest change we’ve seen. Bare with us, he’s trying to consolidate and drop prices. But if I didn’t work there, I wouldn’t pay. All of your descriptions were accurate. We all love the italiano on our staff, it’s the best. I understand all the frustrations.

Can’t lie, their green goddess sandwiches, the new club ones, are huge and delicious. I’m the biggest critic of their prices lately. But my God, those sandwiches, help me. However, I just cannot get on board with them raising their prices for their core. offerings. You know the soup sandwich, the mac & cheese/sandwich all that crap like why would those prices DOUBLE it makes NO sense. It’s friggin sandwiches and soup. My grandma used to eat there because they offered inexpensive and healthy offerings. That’s how I found out about them actually. I turned my mom onto them. Years ago. I understand that wages have gone up, and that costs of certain ingredients have gone up. Perhaps even everyone’s rent has gone up. Suck it up! We are all struggling. I have a business too if I keep raising my prices, people just don’t buy my shit. Sometimes you have to eat those costs and that is just part of doing business. Those core menu ingredients like flour, to make bread and pasta, Frozen veggies, bulk cheese, etc. are still the cheapest shit you can buy. If you are going to charge an arm and a leg for the latest items, at least keep the cost of your core menu down. I feel like Panera core audience is older people. At least that is what I have always known them to be. It infuriates me to think of them gouging grandmas and grandpas who were sucked into their old pricing. And don’t know that they are being bled dry now because it has been so insidious.
Panera is getting rid of their bakers and going to reheated frozen bread at their stores now, all while increasing prices. None of those sandwiches looked like they were worth $9. I wasn’t a frequent Panera flyer before, but I definitely won’t be going out of my way for it anymore.

Over the last 20 years Panera has downsized and have really let themselves go. I remember getting a 1/2&1/2 in HS and it was almost a full panini with a full salad for about $10.
I work at a Panera. I don't make the food, but since what you got was before the launch, I think the staff didn't have the correct methods to make the new items "down" yet. From what I know, Panera reduced the thickness of their breads, so the breads you got may still have been the thicker versions, and they also increased the amount of ingredients. For example, the cheesesteak replaced the steak and cheddar sandwich, and the cheesesteak has more steak than the steak and cheddar sandwich had. Also, the tomatoes looked like they were cut a little thin, like the tomato slicer was at the wrong slice thickness setting. As for the ranch, I'm not a "ranch person" and I think it reminds me of Ken's Steakhouse Ranch that you can get at grocery stores. Nothing special. The chicken bacon rancher...I was VERY surprised they use the chopped bacon bits not the slices. You should be able to ask for the sliced bacon instead, I don't think there would be a cost differential unless you asked for "extra bacon." Thanks for sharing!

We tried a few new items yesterday, Southwest Chicken salad and chicken bacon rancher. We liked both but the salad was certainly evolution not revolution. Some value tips for Panera.... First, the most obvious, participate in Panera Rewards. It's not complicated, doesn't make you jump through a lot of hoops and does toss out some more valuable offers once in a while though most are free drinks or a free bagel and other small offers. Secondly, gift cards... There are a lot of places you can get Panera gift cards for 10-20% off face value including periodic offers from Panera themselves. We sometimes get a 'pick 2' and split it. Even though it looks odd to order, a pick 2 could be 2 sandwiches, 2 soups or whatever. It's just a way to save a little bit of money because you only get 1 side item which, in the case of chips, is probably big enough to split. Also if you buy a pick 2 you have a discounted bakery item offer you can use on that order. All of these things help in small ways but we like the food enough to go through the effort.
Keep in mind that inflation today is not calculated the same as it was in the late 70's early 80's. Food prices and energy prices are NOT INCLUDED!! The layoffs and location closures will be around the corner. Roast beef pricing to portion is double that of other meats in Walmart lunchmeat wall. I'm 45 and remember my parents growing a garden or we couldn't eat period. And my parents were low middle class in the early 80's. Its not worth eating out anymore at all. 😢

I was a food prep for Panera a few years ago. I can tell you anything with the chicken or steak is sorted out and weighed. Each recipe that calls for chicken or steak is weighed at 1.7 oz of meat. That's not a lot in a sandwich when the bread is always bigger. Everything down to the salads has a special tool to scoop out and/or measured so every order is the same. We had guide books for everything and if we put the wrong tablespoon or whatever anywhere and corporate came to inspect, it was our butt on the chopping block. I loved their food when I worked there. We got a 70% discount for our meal ONLY on the days we worked and just one meal. I don't eat there anymore because it's way too expensive to pay full price for what you get.

The sandwich sizes also are very small for the price. They have good bread I prefer to pick up a loaf and go home to make 8-10 better sandwiches for the price of one of their half sandwiches. Sad because it was a better quality place to eat compared to drive thru's but I cannot justify paying so much and not get my moneys worth. I hate to feel ripped off.
I prefer firehouse subs. They're about the same price but they're far from stingy. My favorite is the Jamaican jerk turkey sandwich. Don't forget a cookie or brownie they're pretty good as well.

I use to work for Panera and they throw away a lot of food like bread and veggies like tomatoes and lettuce especially when it's not rotated efficiently. They lke everywhere else have to offset the loses on raising the prices. I worked in the back and throw heavy bags of food out in order for a truck shipment to come in. Managers don't care. Cost of doing business.
Please do the survey from your receipt from Panera. The items you got do not look like Panera's commercial for their new line. False advertising for sure. Speaking about the tomatoes on the blt vs the commercial, teeny vs giant. Wow, I will say something else, isn't the bread for a blt toasted? I like Panera Bread, but they have small portions with high prices. I don't go there very often. Those sandwiches have nothing on the sandwiches you make.
On the chicken bacon rancher. Replace the bacon and chicken with the soppressatta , smoked pulled chicken and add garlic aioli. Soooo good. I don’t bother with anything else

Yeah Panera's portions have gotten smaller and smaller over the years..its not what it used to be like 15 years ago.. its just plain sad. I couldn't tell you the last time I went there.. definitely been a few years.
Yeah, I’ll just make a sandwich at home. My boyfriend says I should work at Subway, because I make the best sandwiches. It’s just all about making your own dressings, spreads and using high-quality meats, cheese and veggies. Anyone can make a delicious sandwich, that doesn’t cost eight dollars. That’s just ridiculous. If you want a good sandwich, go to Jimmy John’s. They don’t skip on the meat or the toppings. Also, the tomato basil on focaccia at Caribou. They add so much damn cheese, tomatoes, and pesto. The sandwiches huge. It’s just unbelievable and it’s totally worth the 6.50. ❤
Honestly, I think they've been participating in "shrinkflation" the last few years. I went last Summer after not there in awhile and ordered a bowl of soup. They literally filled it up HALF way, and when I brought it to their attention they said, "that's our normal portion size". Ok, so the bowl of soup is actually a cup??? Ha!

I love Panera...but they have decreased the size of their sandwiches and didn't say anything like we wouldn't notice 😏

I like Panera Bread, but they have small portions with high prices. I don't go there very often. Those sandwiches have nothing on the sandwiches you make.

On the chicken bacon rancher. Replace the bacon and chicken with the soppressatta , smoked pulled chicken and add garlic aioli. Soooo good. I don’t bother with anything else

For thr cost of the chicken bacon you could have bought a sams club/ costco chicken and a double loaf of good bread and then spend a scootch more for some bacon and feasted for 2 days on chicken bacon sammy! Geez they deserved to be called out
Yeah Panera's portions have gotten smaller and smaller over the years..its not what it used to be like 15 years ago.. its just plain sad. I couldn't tell you the last time I went there.. definitely been a few years.
Yeah, I’ll just make a sandwich at home. My boyfriend says I should work at Subway, because I make the best sandwiches. It’s just all about making your own dressings, spreads and using high-quality meats, cheese and veggies. Anyone can make a delicious sandwich, that doesn’t cost eight dollars. That’s just ridiculous. If you want a good sandwich, go to Jimmy John’s. They don’t skip on the meat or the toppings. Also, the tomato basil on focaccia at Caribou. They add so much damn cheese, tomatoes, and pesto. The sandwiches huge. It’s just unbelievable and it’s totally worth the 6.50. ❤

Honestly, I think they've been participating in "shrinkflation" the last few years. I went last Summer after not there in awhile and ordered a bowl of soup. They literally filled it up HALF way, and when I brought it to their attention they said, "that's our normal portion size". Ok, so the bowl of soup is actually a cup??? Ha!

The only good items at Panera are the soups and bakery items, but none are scratch made there. Still, too expensive for the amounts or lack of.
I don’t know if it’s just the Panera’s I’ve been to. But they’ve always been overpriced, and bland af. It’s the only place I’ve ever even THOUGHT about asking for a refund for a meal lol. Never have and probably never will, but I heavily thought about it. I don’t understand the hype they have.

I customize everything I order add everything I can add on for free like cucumber, romaine lettuce, banana peppers, extra sauce etc.

You should compare that Panera $8.50 sandwich to an $8.50 sandwich from Jersey Mike’s, something tells me it’s worlds apart. Panera is so desperate to make up for their messed up energy drinks.

As a rule of thumb…I only eat Panera when someone else pays because if I pay $9 for a half sandwich it better be incredible…ITS A HALF AND ITS EMPTY! Yall charging people $9 for bread and sauce.

He chooses it because he likes it and he finds it disrespectful if I do not eat with him when we go. Maybe you should start moving through life assuming positive intent as a norm for yourself.
