Hi PennCentral99, I wanted to let you know that I spend a lot of money on mostly MTH locos planning on using the MRC system but changed to DigitraX. In hasted i bought a used Digitrax Zephyr dated 2008. I want to replace it with a new one and am also planning on buying the DT500D Advanced Duplex Radio Equipped Super Throttle.Some of my MTH switcther locos have the remote controlled coupler on them which I want to also use the Digitrax to use the remote controlled coupler (CV 8 and 9). Can the Digitrax activate this coupler like I could with my MRC system? Would really appreciate more details via my email which is bulldozerman01@gmail.com. Thank you very much! Broadway Limited has a preset sound effect for this for both their Steam and Diesel Locomotives, that being the F9 button. It's a neat sound ... the engine revs down, the brake is heard being pulled, and then all goes quite. So ... I wondered if you knew of a CV setting for this in an Athearn Diesel Locomotive? I'm technically inept in figuring things like this out! LOL!!! Appreciate any help!
hi John! I know that some loco manufacturer's have the decoder companies program certain functions, but not sure about this one. I think it depends more on the decoder and command station than the loco. Since this video, I bought a Digitrax DT402 throttle. The hand held throttle has an Emergency Stop Button, which is not on my Digitrax Zephyr Xtra command station. When I push the Emergency Stop Button, whatever loco is active will go thru the shut-down sequence. For the dynamic brake, it is F11 on the Digitrax hand throttle. I use it all the time because I have it set to actually stop the train, brake squeal and brake set.
Great job!! Two CV topics that I haven't figured out yet are: 1) how to program 4-digit addresses. (I think this has something to do with "extended" addresses but I haven't seen specific instructions on how to do it. 2) I hate it when I power up my controller and most of my locomotives fire up. I would like to be able to start each locomotive separately and only when I am ready to use it. My LokSound decoders do this beautifully, but the others all start up when the power turns on. Any ideas?
If you are using a digitrax zephyr, please watch my "Blast Mode" programming video, it covers 4-digit address. If your other sound decoders are soundtraxx, I believe CV 113 can be programmed for the "quiet mode" and only sound when summoned

I've been using DCC for 7 years and love how it opens up a new world to model train operations. I do have a question though. Is there a way to program the decoder to not start the engine sound card when it 1st gets power. I have multiple engines and when they are sitting idle engines off (sound) if there's a short anywhere on the lay out all the engines restart their sound cards. This is very annoying. Any ideas
Agreed, DCC (and sound) has renewed a lot of people's interest with model railroading. Depending on the brand of decoder, you might be able to program it for the "non sound" mode. The issue you describe is a common complaint, where a "hiccup" will cause a restart of the system. Which decoders do you use?
Great how to! I'm just now learning to get into all the CV's. Is there a master list of all CV's somewhere on the net? I use the JRMI Sprog to do my programming. Just trying to find a master list off CV's from all Manufactures.
Most manufacturer's have a list for their CV's. Unfortunately, they don't all use the same CV's (i.e. Soundtraxx and Digitrax CV list would be different). I use Soundtraxx and they have a list in the rear of the user's guide of all the CV's. You can download the manual on their website. JMRI is an awesome program, which I don't have, but hope to in the future. Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for the video. I was able to use this in programming my new Genesis GP7. As I am new to this again I appreciate videos like this as they are so much more informative then the directions in the box. I do have a question, during your video you were about to explain how to match the sound of the loco with the movement, how were you able to do that. On mine for example the sound revs up to slow to the movement and when it stop locomotive stops the motor is still whining down. I have CV 3 and 4 adjusted like yours. Thanks again for your help.
I'm glad the video helped. Try programming CV 3 and CV 4 again. I have CV 3 set to 150 and CV 4 to 50. I have since gotten a DT402 and have learned a whole new dimension in programming. I have noticed that even if the loco "lurches", sometimes the decoder still doesn't take the command. The DT402 will tell me if the decoder takes it by reading "good". The book talks about "manual notching" but I haven't experimented with that yet. PM me if you need more help. Thanks and I appreciate your comments!
like your style of organization with the binder.I rediscovered the hobby being a young man like yourself and found the dcc technology to really bring the hobby to another level with this technology .Have many different sound decoder types and have done a few installs.he tricky one I have to program is a MRC 16 bit sound .They are very vague on there programming instruction .So a lot of trial and error .Runs and sounds really good ,but having found when you turn on the bemf it will not run smooth until Ifound that you need to manually program almost everything related to it and have a 4 digit address in it .This is the main trick .Has to have a 4 digit address and program 112,113,114 to lower then default values then set the command station to 128 speed steps and walla! All working as good as any of the high end sound decoders.More work ,but worth the price especially in a Bachmann Spectrum.Great videos you do Thanks!
I seem to work well with soundtraxx tsunami's. my last loco purchase came with an ESU decoder. I'm not disappointed, but the learning curve is different.. Also, since I bought a handheld (DT402), programming is much easier, and I guess it'll get easier if/when I get a PR3 and DecoderPro. Thanks for watching and commenting!
Okay I've configured my Athearn GP38-2 as you've describe with good results. I'm using a Prodigy Express 2 DDC, still have a horn sounding on every speed step increase but I can live with it. my last problem is at shut down the bell sounds endlessly and #1 doesn't end it's ringing. any ideas?
glad the programming is going OK. Seems like CV 193 (Automatic Bell On Set Point) is set to low (0 or 1), try changing it to 5. Also, if things are not happening the way you want, a complete reset to factory settings may be needed, then program the CV's you want.
Thank you for information on programming auto sounds, I would love too do that but did not find anything labeled auto sound in the cv list for my digitrax sdn144 decorder. Very new too this and it is a bit overwhelming right now. Thank you again.
Grant Junction this procedure is for a Soundtraxx Tsunami. I do not have any digitrax decoders and am not familiar with their CV programming. You may need to get with Digitrax and ask them about this feature. Don't get overwhelmed, it'll get easier the more you do it. Thanks!

I believe that feature is based on how fast you turn the throttle up or down., try a slow increase or decrease. If that doesn't work, you may be able to adjust CV 195 (see the bottom of page 63 in Soundtraxx User Guide)
i bought a decoder by its self i hooked it up to motor and track power and so the sound works good and its is not in anything . can you explain how to go about doing this it is a tsuami steam and it was hooked up with a (link rf module / rxm-916-es or and lxr v2.1 oct-2011 on one chip and other is the tsuami .. it does have cap. and speaker hooked up to it i think its was a remote control it also had a plug for battery i want to hook it up in my steam engine .. i also tried to plug new harness in the decoder by itself to . can or have you ever seen this kind of hook up before ? i have seen this kind in S-scale it almost would be like the new b.limited rolling thunder with the AF it looks to be the decoder is factory with speaker and cap. and the af chip ? i have no idea ? paid five bucks for all estate sale . the tsuami decoder is heavy or med steam with no PINK OR WHITE WRAP ON IT its older one and i think it is a 750 or 1000 thanks i no its alot and using a digatrax 400
Thanks, glad you like it. According to digitrax, a “busy” message during programming means that the system is temporarily busy. Simply try the task again. When the system is no longer busy, you will get a “Good” response. A “Fail” message during programming means that there is a problem with the locomotive on the programming track. Check to be sure the loco's wheels are making good contact with the programming track. Make sure that the decoder is properly installed in the locomotive. Make sure the connections to the programming track are secure. Make sure the programming track is powered.
This was a great video. I actually learned something I didn't know. Regarding the comment from Grand Pere Marquette, I was able to program each one of my locos to come on when I turn the throttle knob. I downloaded the Diesel Technical reference manual as well as the Diesel Sound User's guide. Both of these you can get from the Soundtraxx website. Just click on this link. www.soundtraxx.com/manuals.php. To get the loco to start at the turn of the throttle knob, program bit #5 of CV #116 to 0. The explanation is on page 3 of the Diesel Sound user's guide and page 61 of the Diesel Technical Reference manual. I would like to know how to stop the loco when you have finished it. I would like to do it without turning off the track power. It says in the Users Guide to press the Emergency stop button on the command station but I have yet to figure out where this button is on my Digitrax Zephyr Extra.
In order to have the sound shut-off after use, CV 113 needs to be programmed. Go to page 65 in the Diesel Technical Reference manual. According to the techs at Soundtraxx, the Emergency Stop Button they are referring to is on the handheld (i.e. DT402). The Emergency Stop Button on the Zephyr is the Power Button (but that wouldn't achieve the purpose). I used to do this, but didn't cover it in the video. hi, let's try and handle one issue at a time. First, let's see if we can get you decoder to respond. What brand is the deocder? Most decoders will reset to factory default by entering the following sequence: PROG→ OPS → Address “00” → CV 8 = 8, CV 30 = 2 → Power Down. let me know if this works.
no .... so its a OLD STYLE tsunami steam decoder as i have used others . i did buy this at estate sale brought it home and hooked it up but nothing.... i tried to reset myself put nothing ... im using a digitack 400-2 controller .. there seems to be some tape not like the new ones that are purple tape , its CLEAR YELLOWISH kemton tape ? and i have the plug hooked up as this red and black power and orange and gray to motor ?.. its not in anything ..SO ........ it was hooked up to some other board and i think it was for a chip that was for a system using remote control ? the chip that i CUT off said LINX rf module it has a black red and dark green wire on it they ran underneath the tsunami chip I DID LOOK THIS CHIP UP AND I GUESS FOR S- SCALE REMOTE CONTROL OR "HO" AND YOU CAN USE ANY DECODER YOU WANT .. i dont no just trying to figure this out ... I THINK YOU MIGHT HAVE TO HOOK BOTH CHIPS TO RESET PLUS on that other LINX chip it has a BLUE STICK ON IT IT AND THAT SAYS AF 916 ?
i just found out that i need a S-CAB throttle to run it so,, mine is i guess an older style ... i explained to guy that i put new plug just in decoder and he said NEED S -CAB CONTROLLER so ......... see if you can find out anything thanks

the only annoying feature is the horn sounds every time I increase or decrease speed how can I eliminate that?

i just found out that i need a S-CAB throttle to run it so,, mine is i guess an older style ... i explained to guy that i put new plug just in decoder and he said NEED S -CAB CONTROLLER so ......... see if you can find out anything thanks

Not sure that can be done with a Soundtraxx Tsunami. That feature is available on the Sountraxx Tsunami 2. Which version do you have?

Soundtraxx Tsunami does not allow you to set the bell with the horn. You need a Sountraxx Tsunami 2 to do that
