Detonation is controlled by a piezoelectric fuse meaning that there is an electrical current being sent to the detonator. When the grenade hits something the impact breaks the piezo element and sends a current to the detonator, setting it off. That's just a very basic explanation. There are things like safety mechanisms that I haven't mentioned and a few other things.

Notsofamous one You're right, though it's around 920m. There's actually a video where one detonates right above a soldier's head. You can take the warhead apart and remove the mechanism that makes it self detonate, meaning it'll travel for as long as it has velocity. It's done in order to hit a building, or something similar, when you'd normally be out of range.

always liked the drum mag version of the Tommy gun (or Thompson) even though it was costly to make and wasn't often reliable.
I would rather a drum mag with a upgraded spring and some other goodies to help with reliability
