- Following the California Supreme Court's ruling that allows UC Berkeley to build housing at People's Park, Berkeley Mayor Jesse Arreguin joins CBS News Bay Area Elizabeth Cook to address concerns about development and the biggest obstacles to building affordable housing in Berkeley
For the longest time People's Park was Berkeley's main homeless encampment before encampments became widespread in the East Bay.
The park is not a "hub for activism and political protest." It hasn't been for a very long time. It was home base for the perennial homeless, who either needed institutional housing or those who had more than enough time to transition into more permanent housing but chose not to.
It also served as a staging ground for the local petty thieves and dealers. The people who settled into the park ruined it. They ruined it for others to use. Those who advocated keeping the park as it was either had strong sentimental connections with its past, ignoring the horrible state the park had become, or were content to see a dark blight in a changing city.
It's only a few people's park. Not an all people's park.
People's Park used to be the place to get LSD.
Even if they build it in a different place within the southside of berkeley, I know from personal experince that the people who opposed people's park will not support building new housing on private property.
The NIMBY crowd is just a bunch of trolls who have nothing better to do than getting in the way.
BUILD MORE HOUSING!!!!!
What a treat to house the Homeless with young students!
It’s definitely over
Was it Fred Cody who called it _"Some_ People's Park?" Maybe it was Moe, I forget. The point is, it was never about the land, owned by the Regents, or the City of Berkley, which grew into existence around the University, or the (temporary resident) students or (permanent) residents of Berkeley.. As always, it is and was about power, who has it, who doesn't, and the struggle between the two. Since 1969 it has been a symbolic issue successfully inserting chewing gum "upon the wheels and upon the gears" of the Regent's imperial expansionism. Now, why would anyone want to do a thing like that? Hmmm? They didn't start calling us (yes, I live here, 1 block from said "park") "The People's Republic of Berkeley," for nut-n, ya know!
How is it there is still a housing shortage when there are so many vacancies and student enrollment has not recovered since the pandemic? Interviewing just just students is a just a one-sided story, anything they pay is too expensive mentality. The developers are clearly trying to sell us more housing and funneling money to special interest and stake holders. Politicians will always run on the platforms of affordable housing, save the homeless, etc but not only these problems not get solved, they get worse. Another housing/homeless complex to steal our tax dollars.
There is no vacancies, especially in a region like the Bay Area. California dosen't have a millions empty homes. It's not developers who are trying to sell more housing, but california needs housing. If you live in a rich bubble where you don't see the need for more housing, well I need to remaind you that there are peoole who actually need affordable housing in both buying and renting.
It's simple: It's an affordable housing shortage. Landlords saw the boom with rents doubling every few years, and they are not ready to give up the gains. They would rather keep units vacant with higher rents. Students are coming back, and the university knows increasing enrollment is a good way to solve its fiscal woes created by the university's overpaid administration workers.
Good Point!
Affordable to who ?
In this case to students. That's why they call it "student housing". You are a bit slow in general, are you not? ;-)
Has anyone heard about Tilden Park?! There's lots more space there. Lazy people just need to hike over there. Duh! * Cav *
Shut down People’s Park!
It is already shut down, bro.
@3:38 damn, people are still wearing masks outside in summer of 24. I get why people looking to do crime still wear them, but normal people walking outside on a nice warm day, crazy.
Build more housing!
People's Park was originally founded by a affluent person (michael delacour) wanting to have relations with his partner. He then thought, "we should make this a park".
It's now a battle of colonization & affluence, using political history to stop housing of already owned UC land.
I should also add 2 houseless people passed away due to climate crisis there. Also, Affordable housing developer is not assigned today because leftists attack supporters (e.g. resignation of Rigel Robinson, in that district)
As a atudent defender of Peoples Park, i say SHAME ON UC!! SHAME ON YOU!
Did your dog write this?
Are you a student at a community college?
