  • Trying to fish through the Dogfish and Pouting that are about in great numbers during this time of year and try to catch a big Bass or Cod from my local beaches in the East Devon area.

    Hi really interested in this video as i spent a lot of time on holiday in
    this area in my youth boat fishing from Beer and shore fishing from the Sidmouth and Seaton beaches and caught my first mullet from the river in Seaton. Jacob's Ladder beach was my favourite as i caught bass from the rough ground and my dad lost a big(ish) conger there at night. Exmouth was another venue we fished and my oldest brother had a very good bass on a mackerel head and i still have the black and white picture of him with the fish. Happy memories.

      @@TedGreenBeachFishing Hi yes in the early 60's there was some great fishing to be had from the shore and boat all around the UK. A lot of people will not believe it but cod were frequent catches from the Norfolk andSuffolk beaches with loads of tasty dabs in the winter and in those days tackle was crude but advancing and a big cast was 100 yards! Solid glass and hollow glass rods were used and my dad had a Milbro 10 ft hollow glass beach rod with a sea king multiplier and a solid glass boat rod with a Penn multiplier. I had a solid glass 6 ft rod with a Penn SeaBoy but started with a centre pin. I have a photo of me on Cromer pier with an old centre pin reel at 6 years old circa 1962 and yes we caught fish. We discovered that Tope could be caught, or correctly, hooked and mostly lost in late May or early June from the pier. In those days you could go down the lifeboat slipway to gaff the fish, no conservation in those days, and they were big fish 40 lbs plus. I did after a while manage a fish of about 35 lbs and i remember my older brother hooking one fish which nearly spooled his Penn reel. Typical line was about 25 lbs mono and until we read Clive Gammon's writings we didnt really have much insight and dad bought a Penn Squidder and filled it to the brim with 20lb mono and used a wire trace and then we caught them fairly frequently. What i remember most was that first run when all you could do was hold on and watch line empty from the spool at an unbelievable rate! I wonder if they still come to that area in late spring but cancer has meant i will never find out, unfortunately. Regards Bill

    Good Vid yet again Greg....That was a nice size bass..Questions as always When you going to do a vid just on catching Wrasse and what weights do you use when your LRF off of a pier...Ive got myself a LRF rod and reel so almost ready for the off...Take care stay safe .....................................

    • @TedGreenBeachFishing
      @TedGreenBeachFishing  Před 5 lety

      Robert Mortimore Cheers. I use 3 gram Dropshot weights, or a 5 gram if the current is a bit strong when fishing a Dropshot set up but I also like to use spilt shot SSG size on my leader, about an inch or so from the hook if I want to fish closer to the bottom.

    Enjoyable vid, as usual, I live in Honiton , not asking exact locations, but you mention reefs for Huss, are there any reefs in East Devon

    • @TedGreenBeachFishing
      @TedGreenBeachFishing  Před 5 lety

      Derek Jefferson Cheers. There's plenty of mixed ground/reef from Budleigh (Otter mouth) to Beer, if you look on google maps you'll see where they are mate. Obviously your going to loose gear so I don't tend to fish those areas and stick to the clean ground, good for lure fishing though if you want to target Wrasse or Bass.

    Great video, something with sharp teeth to bite so cleanly through the tail of that pouting. Tope, spurdog, feel a conger would have crushed it a bit more?

      @TedGreenBeachFishing  Před 4 lety

      Richard Turner thanks, I'd like to think so mate as it would be great to catch a Spurdog or Tope from my local beaches in East Devon but I haven't heard of anyone catch them locally from the beach but they could be there, cheers. 👍

    Alright mate, out of Branscome, Beer and Seaton, which one has the best fishing in your opinion? I'm working near Axminster for a few days and I'm going to get some fishing in.
    Mays usually a bit quiet on the fishing front so I just want to increase my chances. Thanks

    • @TedGreenBeachFishing
      @TedGreenBeachFishing  Před 4 lety +1

      Master Beethoven Seaton is the easiest to get to with parking on the seafront, should be good for Plaice, Small eyes and Smooth Hounds now. Branscombe is harder to get to due to the country lanes and when you park, the camera takes a photo of your car so ensure you pay soon as possible (been a lot of fines) but the fishing can be really good for Plaice and Smooth Hounds with rough ground either side of the beach. I only LRF/HRF at Beer for Wrasse and Bass from the east side of the beach facing Seaton over the rough ground. I tend to fish Branscombe more only because it's a bit easier to get to for me. 👍

      @@TedGreenBeachFishing Thanks bud, appreciated. I think i'll stick to Seaton then. Managed to get some ragworm, blacks and sandeel sorted for the weekend, so hopefully i'll see a bite or two..

      Massive, massive blank in the end. Fished all of Sunday, had a few hours sleep and was back on it from 4am till 9am today. Tried by the estuary mouth, then middle of the beach, then over on the Axmouth side (but it was too snaggy). Just had a look on WSF and it looks like everyone struggled this weekend - May can be a tricky month.
      I like it up there though, i'll be back next spring tide. Cheers

      Master Beethoven I know a chap that fished there on the Wed night and caught a Smooth hound and his PB Small eyed of 8.9lb, just before the neap tides and the spider crabs showed up. Tough at the moment but like you said hopefully things will improve during next weeks bigger tides. 👍

      Greg De-bakers There known as Roc Salmon in Some fish and chip shops, l suppose it just depends on how you cook them and what your taste is, fried, baked, coated in garlic etc. I've skinned and grilled them in the past and it wasn't to bad.
