The manliest movie ever. The black Chopper pilot at the end was Kevin Peter Hall, the Predator actor in a second roll so his face could be seen. he was 7'2" tall nd also played Bigfoot "Harry" in Harry and the Hendersons.
According to my cousin (film student), this movie is frequently used as an example in film school of how to transition between genres while maintaining near perfect pacing. It starts off with a very militaristic, action-hero vibe, transitions to sci-fi, and then to survival horror while maintaining both of the previous genres and moving the story along smoothly. As for the lore, the Predator soecies are called the Yautja. They are a species of extraterrestrial hunters that base their entire society on a strict honor code that only permits them to hunt prey that can challenge/threaten them. They travel across the Galaxy hunting different hostile lifeforms on different worlds.
sweet. Predator-approved message. for those going through the comments, I've got good news. God is good because He gives His blessings to everyone, whether they be good or bad. but everyone has at least, told a lie, or stolen something in their life. and that makes them sinners, and God will not allow sinners in heaven; in His presence, because He is holy. so, God has to punish the sinners in hell, because God is severe and just. but God is also love and He made a way for some to be saved from His wrath. here are the steps:
1. admit that you're a sinner and are lost.
2. realize that the penalty of sin is death (hell).
3. believe that Jesus (who is God) died on the cross, was buried, then rose from the grave, to pay the penalty for man's past, present, and future sins.
4. trust Christ alone as your Savior, and not on your own good deeds to get you to heaven (nor a combination of your faith and self-righteous works).
5. pray to God NOW that you're accepting Christ's free gift of salvation because if you die before making this decision, it's too late, and you'll 🔥🥵😈
6. and to be a disciple, tell people about Jesus, read the bible, go to church regularly to know God's will for your life.
I'm glad they don't reveal too much about the Predator in this movie. They say less is more. The less you know about the Predator, the scarier he becomes.
But it's twofold. The less we know about the Predator, the more we want to know about what makes him tick!
Perhaps this is why this film has become such a great cult classic! And why it's popularity has grown into a big franchise! -OG

Predators are a hunter species and find humans a worthy prey to hunt. This one was a trophy hunter who liked collecting skulls, like some human hunters who collect deer antlers from their hunts. He found a worthy prey in Dutch which is why he took off his weapons and fought him bare handed. He blew himself up at the end because he wasn't going to be someone else's trophy and also not to allow their technology to fall in the hands of a inferior species. Kevin Peter Hall who played the Predator was over seven feet tall, towering over Arnold. You can see the actor out of his makeup at the end of the movie, he was playing as the helicopter pilot. This is one of my favorite Arnie movies
This film perfectly pulled the ultimate bait and switch. Started as a cold war action caper with Dutch and his team manipulated into a deadly mission by Dillon. 'We are a rescue team, not assassins'. All of that suddenly vanishes when the predator shows up. Then it becomes a scifi survival horror nightmare with slasher elements to boot. A true classic.
I always thought the opening moment of the Predator spaceship arriving to Earth was unnecessary. The moment we realize we're in a sci-fi movie should've aligned with the characters' realization. The trailers gave away the genre-fusion as well, which I think is kinda unfortunate. Other movies have tried this as well (From Dusk til Dawn and The Descent come to mind) but generally, the surprise is spoiled before release. It's usually cuz the studios get nervous about the complexities of marketing movies that tell you it's one thing but are really a whole other thing.

Predator 2 isn't necessarily better or worse, as it's set in a different kind of environment and has different kind of people. Still a very cool sequel though and I hope you'll react to it as well! Same actor who plays the first Predator plays the one in the 2nd movie as well - Kevin Peter Hall. If you look up his name and Arnold's, you'll see some interesting photos of them together on set. Arnold looks like a child next to him lol

FYI: Predators species are called Yautja. Their "dreads" are a part of their skin. If they get cut, they bleed. All predators pick their weapons and accessories based on how well they know and are in tune with said weapons (at least in the lore). And each predator gets sent to earth as their initiation of survival to "climb the ladder". Almost every predator sent to earth is basically a late teen/ young adult. Just things to know that the movies won't tell you.

A bit of trivia - the helicopter pilot at the end who says "What the...?" when he sees the predator's explosion is actually Kevin Peter Hall, the guy who performed the role of the predator.
Originally Jean Claude Van Damme was to be the predator (and there's a few photos and some video of him testing the costume...a couple of shots actually made it into the film) but he was replaced not long before the location filming began.

Yeah that was creepy. Another film that has a similar type creepiness about it, is Stephen King’s Dreamcatcher. There’s a scene where the aliens are telepathically speaking to the military team that’s about to attack them. The aliens are using soft, and gentle human voices, and even children’s voices. Telling them” Please don’t hurt us” It’s pretty weird and disturbing.

Billy the tracker is a native American of which there are many good trackers. Some even help train Military Special Forces in tracking skills.

This movie gives us cause to question our own humanity. Many people hunt animals for sport, while others protest to this. The Predator is a hunter that hunts humans, but in the final moments we're left to question ourselves as humans: The Predator is no more evil than anyone who hunts animals for sport, and in the fianl moments we realise it's not some mindless killing machine, but a living creature that's clearly in pain. Dutch realises this and actually feels sorry for it, that's why he doesn't kill it with the rock, the bitter sweet music that plays is to make us feel the same way.

The purpose of this movie, and many other similar ones including “Alien” and “Independence Day,” is to induce cosmic speciesism against extra terrestrials in preparartion for a false flag ‘alien’ invasion, which is “the last card” in the list of enemies produced by the military industrial complex.

Exactly, unlike humans the yautja are actually a superior being and do hunting for sport.
The difference is that the yautja hunt creatures that can make tools mainly humans don't.
Random thoughts, with no regard to official lore: the Predator is, first and last, a trophy hunter. It uses mimicry to lure its prey, like human hunters using duck or elk calls. It is proud and sportsmanlike-- to a point. It is also petty and cruel. The more I think about it, the more this film reminds me exactly of human trophy hunters.
I kind of thought that was obvious.

The fact there's so much awesome lore regarding those aliens and yet they consistently failed to touch on any of that successfully is a shame. Out of all the movies that got 10 sequels this is one that actually should have for no other reason than world building.
Arnold dominated the action movies of the 80s. It was a challenge to find a good worthy adversary since Arnold was always so much bigger and stronger 💪 than his opponents. As the audience, we never questioned who would win.
However, Predator was different. There's a point where you actually questioned if Arnold would make it out alive! It certainly helps to have 7' 3" tall actor Kevin Peter Hall to play the Predator!
Fun fact: Kevin Peter Hall also played Bigfoot in the charming family film Harry and the Henderson's! -OG

Predator is indeed a trophy hunter
The "great tracker" guy is American Indian. That's why he's so good at tracking and sensing things. They are taught to track animals footprints hear the slightest movement from when they're kids.
I don't know why, but for years I assumed he had his testicles in the bag around his neck.
The Predator can hide itself visually, but there’s some things that it can’t hide no matter the level of tech.
It can’t hide the sounds it makes moving through the jungle. It can’t hide slight movement of the foliage from its passing.
If you’ve been taught from an early age to detect signs of animals in the wild, like Billy likely did, you would notice stuff that was off to the untrained eyes.

Predator 2 is worth watching IMO (very different but not "better") and also the very recent Prey (which is awesome). I can't comment on the other movies. But great reaction, Jyn & Ryl. Thank you.
Predators is decent as well. It's basically a modernized version with a similar "team" and scenes.
Predator 2 is the only good sequel.

The Predator actor was Kevin Peter Hall, 7 feet 2 inches. He was a young black man that was always smiling, even with that heavy suit on. They would take off the mask for water or to wipe his face.

The actor, Kevin Peter Hall plays the preditor. Because they wanted everyone to know who planed the preditor they had him play the helicopter pilot at the end of the film.

The Predator didn't attack the base because he can only attack his prey one at a time in a remote location where the other prey wouldn't notice. The way a lion pack attack a bison or dear when it is isolated from its herd.

The Predator movies are fun. Definitely check out part 2 very different from the first and still really cool. The actor telling the p***y jokes is Shane Black, the writer of the lethal weapon movies, Long kiss good knight, one, maybe two of the Iron Man movies. Had fun watching, thanks for doing Predator.

Shane Black also wrote and directed Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang (2005) with Robert Downey Jr, very underrated film and great fun. His directorial debut.

Apparently, im in the minority that feels like the predator movies get better and better. 2 had a city environment and lore, avp and its sequel offer up a ton of lore. And prey and the others have amazing effects and story. It is a very good franchise.
Definitely watch part 2. Also very good. Very different setting and characters. If you like this film you will most likely enjoy second one as well.

This movie is a great metaphor for the brutality of hunting, but I always thought the Predator should have been a tiny little guy, that would have been a better metaphor in my opinion. A tiny little bastard with superior tech who would be nothing and a weakling without it. A bit like those assholes that go hunting cheetahs and elephants with camouflage, vehicles and giant guns. Even so...pretty great movie and you two are so much fun to watch experiencing these old movies for the first time... thanks for sharing this with us.

So enjoyed, your reaction,..Predator, I love the part where, he's so impressed with Dutch, not only surviving, unlike all the other soldiers,(like you said highly skilled soldiers, the kind you can drop anywhere, and they usually accomplish the mission, without even being detected)but his clever tactics, drawing him out and unlike Predator with all his tech, sophisticated camouflage, he was able to sneak around undetected, and like Predator observe his prey, his opponent, and Predator accepted this as formidable enough, for a challenge, Dutch you could say, acquired some Predator street cred😉, he dumped all his tech, his advantages, and met Dutch, like you said, as a man,..hand to hand combat,..and you know, as someone else mentioned, for Predator, this is a coming of age exercise for his species, to prove their fully capable adult warriors,..and to me, Predator's hand to hand bare knuckles fight with Dutch, is a more a proof of his coming into if you will adult manhood,..Dutch above all the rest, was a formidable adversary,...even though Predator had all this tech in the beginning, and is huh, of bigger stature, it still came down to how he faired, in a real fight,..face to face,..when me and friends went to see this, we couldn't believe the whole premise of it,...there was a movie, old, black and white, Invisible Invaders?,..John Carradine is in it,.where aliens come to Earth, and sneak around, observe humans at first, but in this case, merge, or take over human's bodies,..but Predator was far more sophisticated than that, and I don't know if it was said by the director, but,..someone from the movie, in a behind the scenes doc, said actual "government " types came to them, asking them how they got this idea, of this camouflaged alien, because he's not actually Invisible,..it's something about refractive light?,.I have no idea about the science of it,..I'm a nerd, but not that smart a nerd,..and it seems to me if government types took the time to visit a movie set, about fictional story,..they must be working on something similar, trying to,..there's a saying,.."life imitates art,..or art imitates life", don't know who said it, I think it swings both ways,..years after Aliens,..there was a story on 60 minutes, or some news show about a new apparatus, developed by the military, that a soldier could strap on,..looks more like what Matt Damon had on in Elysium movie, but this story was before that, but after Aliens, and it supposedly helped the wearer lift heavy objects, like Ripley, loading that huge box, or in the background of her doing that you see a guy lifting, carrying a missile in Aliens movie, and when I saw this news story, I couldn't believe it,..it was like it was becoming a reality,..movies, man look at how Star Trek is inspiring up an coming scientists,..love scifi, even scifi horror, can get you thinking, turns out, watching TV, movies, doesn't rot your brain😁,..ohh an your pronouncing "trophy",..I know it's because of your accent, I mean no disrespect, ever,....my mom is from Louisiana,..to this day she carries that accent,..and it's a little cute and funny, but she cannot pronounce the word organic,..she says "organza",..I don't know why, guess it's her accent,..Creole, French,...loved your reaction, do keep going, Godspeed, Peace ✌

It's so weird how the Predator and Alien film series merged into various Alien vs Predator movies as, tonally, Predator started out far cheesier.
Also amazing how two of the musclebound stars of Predator became US state governors in real life (California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and Minnesota Governor Jesse Ventura), while a third (Sonny Landham, the native American-looking chap) ran for the post of Governor of Kentucky several times but didn't get it.
You'll love it if you watch Arnie's early classic Commando, which must be the most quotable, and one one of the most fun, action movie on earth. Ever since I got into it more than 20 years ago, it literally makes me smile as soon as I think of the word "Commando" XD.
If I had guilty pleasures Commando would be one. (I never feel guilty about what I like.)

What's always been interesting about the Predators are that even if you get past their technological advantages, they are still physically strong creatures. At least compared to the average human, they can tear you apart with their bare hands, you have to outwit them in order to survive

Great film. It was amazing to watch in the theater.
The newer generations tend to view this film as peak 80's action hero tropes and stereotypes. However, it was also a great deconstruction of the 80's action genre. It really starts as an over-the-top 80s action flic but then turns on a dime and shreds everything one might expect. It's no longer about guns and explosions, one-liners or being cool, but it becomes being about intelligence, cleverness, strategy, and the raw will to survive in the face of certain death.
To be frank, I'd skip the rest of the Predator sequels, and go to Prey. Maybe watch Predator 2 because it has some superficial connections to Predator and Prey and it fleshes out some more about the Predator, but just know it's not a great movie (it's not as bad as the other bad sequels though).
I don't see how it is a deconstruction, it just goes in an unexpected direction, and turns from a war movie to an alien encounter.
The hunter becoming the hunted is an old trope, only this time it was aliens.
Predator 2 isn't as good but you should still watch it. It's enjoyable enough.

I personally really like the second movie. It has a lot of detractors, and I don't think it's entirely unearned, but I think it isn't trying to tell the same story as this movie, and that's the biggest stumbling block. The characterization of the Predators are also quite different; this one was more careful, methodical; the one in the second movie is a _jerk,_ taunting his prey almost cruelly.
As for this one,as usual, Ryl twigged onto most of the important points. The Predator doesn't hunt "just because", though; he hunts because it's a part of his culture. You can see how his prey is carefully selected, and which become his trophies is an even more careful selection. These aren't the actions of someone hunting just for kicks or for boredom. What it exactly means is up for debate, but I think the second movie does a pretty good job expanding on all of that without making the Predator less scary.
Incidentally, there _is_ a very well-regarded extended universe in the comics and novelizations that really go into their culture and just what hunting "means", though they aren't canon. Even so, I really like them; my favorite is the novelization _Alien vs Predator: Prey_ by Stephen and Stephanie Perry, but really, the extended universe really lives up to the "extended" part.
Problem with the second film is it had a lot of good actors from other action films but they were all B-graders. Good as second leads, but not really leading man material.

Predator 2 is not better than the original Predator film but it has some key points that's good to know.
Predator 2 is the first movie that teases us that alien xenomorphs are not only in the same universe as Predators but that they have crossed paths.
We also get a glimpse of more Predator tech. And a tease at the end of the film with an object that references the latest Predator film in a prequel that dates back to the 1700s. The prequel is called PREY.
I also recommend the 2010 Predators film. If you like the jungle atmosphere of the original Predator, 2010 Predators is your film.
Predators was supposed to be the original idea for Predator 2 but didn't have the technology or budget to pull that off back then.
You could also delve into the Alien v Predator films too. The first one is 2004, if I recall correctly. The sequel is subtitled Requiem. It takes place immediately after the events of the previous film.
If you watch Requiem, I highly recommend you watch the extended cut and set TV brightness on high because a lot of the fighting scenes are hard to see. -OG
