  • Graffiti Artist SOON ONE arrives in Los Angeles Pan Pacific Park to talk about his place in Los Angeles hip-hop history. Soon is most known as one of the early New York- style graffiti artist in Los Angeles. There has been a long debate as to who was first and who made east coast graffiti famous in southern California, and Soon's name will always come up. Soon was born in the Bronx, New York and moved to Mid-City in Los Angeles in 1982. In Part One, he talks about growing up tagging in New York and hitting the Subway trains before moving to California.

    Not sure if Soon is going to see this but we have history but we never met. You used to run with Sno from Pelham Bay in the Bronx. Sno used to date this girl name Edith Richards. They had a baby together but Edith had a little brother named Steven Richards who used to strike up Hem. He got sent to LA around 1981 to live with his father off Washington and Normandy. He went to Foshay Jr. High were we met. Hem would show me pictures of the pieces Sno had up in the Bronx and from there we started LA's first Tagging Crew. We called ourselves The Wild Two or TW2. I went by Soni and Steve was Hemmy Hem. Make no mistake about it--from 1981-1984 TW2 was UTM We bombed LA so hard people thought we had a large crew but it was just SoniOne and Hemmy Hem. As we got noticed, people started asking to join the crew. So we made a crew called The Wild Team--TWT. We started out just tagging and doing throw ups. One day we were tagging Venice off San Vicente and we Soon tagged on the overpass. The homey Hem went bananas--screaming that's Soon from the Bronx THATS HIM. We used to run missions hitting up all over the Mid Cities area just trying to find you but it never happened. We saw two of your influences TANE and PENO (TANE-The Art Never Ends and PENO-Public Enemy Number One) and we thought either you were rocking some aliases or you had some new proteges. After 1984/The Olympics we graduated from Foshay and I went on to Dorsey High and Hem went back to the Bronx. I never seen or heard from that cat again. So Soon if you are still in contact with Sno or you remember Edith Richards or her brother Steve Richards...hit me back. I would love to know what happened to that brother.

    Since Soon went to JB; lived in the MFHood; chilled at Gardner = Pan Pacific Park, then I wonder: How much of a direct, personal influence he may have had on WCA members PJay (RIP), Rival (RIP), Miner ... even on Alski, who went to JB.

    • @MA-vm6jl
      @MA-vm6jl Před 3 lety +3

      Big influence. He also knew Rick and Risco RIP K2S. He knew CBS, and LABS

    • @TeamDeen
      @TeamDeen Před 3 lety

      Listened to part 2. Relistened to part 1. If Soon was born in 1967, & attended JB, then he should've been c/o '82. If he was 15 in 9th grade, then arguably he only attended JB in the 2nd semester of the 81/82 school year... PJay (RIP) was JB c/o 82... Teck was JB c/o 83... Rival (RIP), Miner, Mist were JB c/o '84... Rival, Miner, Mist would have been in 7th grade, when PJay & Soon were in 9th at JB... JB subsequently gave birth to founding / very early members of WCA, KSN, KGB, T2S, OFA, CBS ...

    • @TeamDeen
      @TeamDeen Před 3 lety

      Remembers seeing Soon & News throw ups together on 1 or more Wilshire lines 20, 21, 22 in '83. Initially, I found it peculiar that Soon went to JB & couldn't clearly remember that JB borders Wilshire; & mentioned Beverly as a possibility several blocks away. However, if Soon ONLY attended JB for a few months, then its location, & the students there; their identities & interests may escape him... The old Pan Pacific auditorium bordered Beverly. If he was the 1st to burn on said walls with a piece, then so be it... Art & ganster Graff was able to flourish in the 80s between Wilshire & Melrose from Highland to La Cienega, because the LAPD; Wilshire Division & maybe what is now Hollywood Division to the N was virtually NON existent in said area.

    • @soonone8306
      @soonone8306 Před 2 lety +1

      It was a long time ago I definitely attended J.B I uses to go through the tunnel underneath Wilshire Blvd I know where I went to school at 😂

    • @TeamDeen
      @TeamDeen Před 2 lety +1

      @@soonone8306 , Peace. Cool. I believe you went there. However, I never heard of anyone, who went to JB reference Beverly Blvd instead of only citing Wilshire... It would be like someone mentioning Rodeo in reference to Audobon instead of only citing King Blvd. If you did not go there that long, then that would make more sense to me. Be well. Peace.
