The German tracks on DESERTSHORE were what inspired me to learn the language. I consider it a life-changing record for that reason. As for CAMERA OBSCURA, I find it an appropriate swan song in several ways. "Funny Valentine" was sort of a reprise of her chanteuse-y era, but done with more ironay than a Dietrich or a Knef. The fact that the Faction was on it was an acknowledgement of her later work with bands. But Cale was also on hand. Touched on every era in a way.
O Konig, lass Dich leiten Lass mich Dich begleiten Konig, lass dich leiten Lass mich dich begleiten Auf diesem weiten Strand Ergreife meine Hand Ich will Dir alles geben Das Dich am Leben halt Ein Hoffen und ein Streben Dein Blick bis in mein Zelt
Oh man, why can't this have been on Desertshore? The album is amazing but this would have filled it out nicely. Maybe they thought it was too similar to the Falconer.
O King, may you lead Let me accompany you O King, may you lead Let me accompany you Onto this wide beach Take my hand I wish to give you everything that you hold dear A hope and a desire Your glance falls into my tent* (*- Roughly. This line may be a reference to Mahler's Kindertotenlieder; it doesn't exactly make grammatical sense; a verb seems to be missing.)
Are you sure? I'm pretty sure she sings "Oh King let me lead you" which changes the context a bit. O King let me lead you, Let me lead you King let me lead you Let me lead you On this wide beach Take my hand I want to give you everything That keeps you alive A hope and a striving Your look into my tent
believe it or not I played on that same harmonium, this chick I dated used to live in England in the early to late 90s and hunted down her (Nico's) son and bought it from him. It was beautiful, it had foot bellows.
You're welcome. Nearly all the songs on Desertshore were lifted from La Cicatrice Intérieure but for reasons unknown König was not included. It's a good thing it resurfaced years later and that it wasn't rearranged for Camera Obscura.
@underpuka I heard her son Ari say this: "Mother rode her bike to the pharmacist's to get pain pills, for a migraine. Since she was clean she did not like to keep any medicines in the house, so she was on her way to the market." A fall off a bicycle may produce a concussion, but it's hardly a significant enough of an accident to produce a brain hemorrhage. A hemorrhage can produce a heart attack as a result. It did not help that people did not get her medical attention. They left her there.
It might not even have been recorded during the Desertshore sessions, it might have been recorded separately for the film. And since it ended up on Camera Obscura, perhaps they felt that it belonged to that era. Hopefully the Camera Obscura masters aren't lost.
@ThePerchance No, I'm right. She died of a brain haemorrhage but had earlier in the day been in some sort of accident with her bike. Since no one witnessed it, no one can say for sure what happened. She was found in the road by her bike, half paralysed. Since she had had a headache before she went out I would say she was already haemorrhaging and fell off her bike when she becamed paralysed. Or maybe she fell and hit her head. In any case, the cause of death was brain haemorrhage.
@StuntmanAustin I've been thinking about putting that up here as well. As far as I know it has no name and has never been released as a Nico track or in any other form.
@winharrison I see what you mean but I never thought Camera Obscura was that bad. I wish there could have been more original songs on it and above all I wish that the live arrangements would have been different, her band really butchered them. Those songs might not live up to her earliest songs but I they're not hopeless, and better than the songs from her last concert. I'd love to hear the Camera Obscura demos, she's always at her best solo on the harmonium.
Hey that's cool! I have actually never heard of that instrument before and just looked it up. I thought maybe it was accordion or something. I was close.
@ThePerchance You seem to fail to comprehend that brain haemorrhage is an injury you might sustain if you fall off your bike. I don't know where your quote is from but Wikipedia says: "Nico had a minor heart attack while riding a bicycle and hit her head as she fell. X-rays later revealed a severe cerebral hemorrhage as the cause of death" James Young says the same thing in his book, quoting Lutz Ulbrich.

It's from a French film called La Cicatrice Intérieure (The Inner Scar). The singer is Nico.
O Konig, lass Dich leiten
Lass mich Dich begleiten
Konig, lass dich leiten
Lass mich dich begleiten
Auf diesem weiten Strand
Ergreife meine Hand
Ich will Dir alles geben
Das Dich am Leben halt
Ein Hoffen und ein Streben
Dein Blick bis in mein Zelt
+Marco Biancu Just for the record, it's "König" and "hält".

@@wanderotter4667 no, to be sure we should find some german speakers and ask them
@@MB-wm8nr I speak German and am a native Dutch speaker which are both similar.
@@MB-wm8nr native German speaker here - it is "let me lead you" :) "let me accompany you" is correct tho
Wow i didnt realize this song was originally for Desertshore. Thank you.
Thanks for uploading.
No so much daft arguing among Nico fanatics. Nice lot, in the main, me reckons.

Wow. I'm impressed; this version is even better than on C.O !

It was take from a Japanese DVD, hence the censorship.

@underpuka strangly as her life, she felt from a bike during a holiday in Spain and just died, doctors detrmine it was a heart attack
"Dein Blick bis in mein Zelt"
Zelt - I think that means Valhalla. And this song is about initiation into the Einherjar.
WIE KANN DIE LUFT SO SCHWER SEIN AN EINEM TAG AN DEM DER HIMMEL IN BAYERN SO GRAU IST....

Her songs in german sound a bit alike.

It's just harmonium, played by Nico.
