      @@kcluckystars you are correct! For double coated dogs, shaving them can be detrimental. It actually helps them stay cool in summers and warm in winters. In addition, if you shave it, it can grow back really weird and not protect the dog like it should. Then on top of that is the risk of sunburn too. Long haired /double coated dogs have Uber sensitive skin. Last resort should be a shave and that is only if they are badly matted or something that shaving is the only option.

    Big Question? Why wasn't the anti tick paralysis medicine administered right after the tick was removed before putting him in the O2 cage?

    • @novasiri7809
      @novasiri7809 Před 2 lety +1

      Because they probably didn't know how long the tick was attached, sometimes they can recover if it wasn't attached for too long, even then, they need permission from the owner to start administering the anti-toxin.
      This is due to the fact that sometimes the anti-toxin can have a bad reaction, and an owner needs to know the risks/debate the risk over the fact it may not even work. And if you watched to the 6:45 mark, you'd know that sometimes.. there's nothing you can do.

    Im very confused... Does Australia not give tick and flea preventatives? I know in America I never hear about pets going through this

    • @HobbyOrganist
      @HobbyOrganist Před 2 lety +4

      I never heard of this in the US, they must have some wierd issue with the ticks in Australia that we don't have here, we have Rocky Mtn spotted fever and Lyme disease, but Lyme I know is cured with antibiotics. Thing is, these diseases require a certain length of time the tick has to be attacked to the dog before they can contract the disease, they don't get it the instant the tick bites, it takes several hours or longer, which means in tick areas and times you have to check your dog. Mauro being such a fluff ball a tick could hide for days and not be found, not the case on a short haired dog.

    • @muchtested
      @muchtested Před 2 lety +1

      The USA doesn't have that particular paralysis tick, but there are other ticks to watch out for and prevent.

    • @ZebraGirl97
      @ZebraGirl97 Před 2 lety +2

      Paralysis ticks actually exist in almost every region of the world. They're just particularly more common in Australia, with the second most common region for them being the Pacific Northwest, mostly Washington state and British Columbia, Canada, which I grew up in (Washington). We may not hear about them as much, but in the USA we have paralysis ticks in the Pacific Northwest, rocky mountain region, and southeast. While there's 6 species of paralysis ticks in the USA (and over 70 worldwide) we mostly have american dog ticks and rocky mountain wood tick, and demacentor tick where Australia they have the Australian paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus). Estimates for the USA are a little difficult but they believe around 100,000 pets a year are affected by paralysis ticks in the USA, of which around 12% are fatal. Since the vast majority occur in the northwest though, even if paralysis ticks do exist in other regions, it isn't something talked about a ton and if you have not lived in the Pacific Northwest you probably aren't aware.
      I believe anti-flea and tick treatments are common in the USA and Australia, but it's easier to prevent fleas than ticks, and there does seem to be a bit more of an emphasis in the USA.

    • @AccidentallyOnPurpose
      @AccidentallyOnPurpose Před 2 lety +2

      Tick paralysis in the US is extremely rare, but lyme disease is common. It's possible to still get a tick even with preventative, there is no 100%. That is why it's important to always check your dog after being outside, with preventative or not.

    • @ladypeiandtheclown5410
      @ladypeiandtheclown5410 Před 2 lety +2

      Australian paralysis ticks are very resilient get more and more resistant to preventatives every season. Yes we have numerous tick prevention and the vast majority of Australians that live in paralysis tick areas do treat and check their dogs for ticks regularly and they do tweak to medication accordingly to help make it more effective. People whose dogs end up with paralysis ticks here in Australia are generally people who have moved from an area where these ticks don’t actually live, so they are a little bit complacent with preventatives. Where I live in Australia doesn’t have paralysis ticks so I don’t need to treat my dogs, but if we travel anywhere to the east coast of Australia for holidays then I treat my dogs a couple of days before we leave with tablets/or serum and I also put a tick collar on as well. We do have normal non threatening ticks here is Australia and they respond very well to all our preventatives, it’s just our paralysis tick that is very deadly to our pets and they are even pretty dangerous to people as well.

    The loss of a pet is always bad and my heart goes out to John & the Sash staff. The only thing I’m going to say after that is that ticks are the reason to keep pet hair short and check them every time you go out for walks, that tick looked like it had been there some time.

    • @Miarahdd
      @Miarahdd Před 2 lety

      Unfortunately with a Pomeranian, it is not really possible to keep the hair short unless you want to have them wear a jacket all summer. They have undercoat like a Husky, which means it should not be clipped as it can otherwise cause alopecia (hair loss) or expose the pomeranian to the elements of sun and winter. Undercoat works like insulation, keeps the dog cool in the summer and protects them from sunburn and warm in the winter.

Get it aboard immediately and give the animal a chance. Granted, they don't all die, but many....too many...have come close. No different than snake bite antiserium, they start it immediately. I've watched many episodes where she is trying to tell the camera what's happening but not actively working. Multitasking is a wonderful skill to possess.

      The issue is with Paralysis ticks, is the prevention doesn't work on them. At all. No one knows why, or how, but no preventative medicine works.
      The only way to ensure your dogs stay safe is keeping their coats maintained, checking them over after every outting/ect.. And sometimes they may be too small and you miss them. They seem to mainly be a big issue in Australlia, but.. yeh.

    You guys are awesome but I really hope that you can work out a payment plan for that poor guy so he doesn't have to sell his car and there's still a chance dog not going to make it

    Why don’t these owners use tick prevention measures on their animals?!?!?

    I want to know why it would cost $2,000 a day for oxygen for a dog why do vets charge such high prices when people can't really afford it why do you think people dump their animals that's one of the reasons because the prices of the Vets are too high $2,000 just for oxygen a day that's outrageous

    What a sad outcome. I don’t know if it was the way it was filmed or edited but when they found the tick I don’t know why they didn’t give the patient the antiserum right away. It seemed like they put the dog in the chamber for oxygen and then brought him out and then they gave him the antiserum. I just wondered if they had given it earlier on as soon as they found the tick that maybe that could save the little guys life.
    I feel so bad for John. I wonder if he’ll get another dog?🥺

      Because giving anything anti-venom/anti-serum comes with risks. Which they have to clear with the owner first. Some animals can fight off the toxin after a bit of time in an O2 cage if it wasn't attatched for long. Some larger breeds have a much easier time.
      But the owner needs to also weigh the risks, costs, and the fact that sometimes, like in Maru's case, the anti-toxin didn't work.

      They possibly did and just didn't mention the antiserum in the episode

      @@kiddykat They did give it but not right after they found the tick. @novasiri Gave a great explanation to what goes on. Right above your comment.

    and to all low income earners - prepare yourself to get your pet put down as soon as a problem appeared. Of course get no animal. Vets are too expensive. Is it not also animal cruelty- I ask the vets - to not treat an animal because the owner cannot afford your horrendous bills?? Shame on you
