    I was lucky enough as a kid of the 50’s to have this cool robot toy. I had the first version of Mr. Machine. I took it apart and put it back together. Afterwards Mr. Machine never walked forwards again. I loved the hell out of it.

      LOL, I had one too.. and I also took it apart, but I never did get it back together so it would work ever again. :(

    I was 5 when I got the original in 1960 for Christmas. Loved it. It was one of my favorite toys to play with.

    The sewing machine shop in Santa Maria, CA had one of these when I was a little kid. I loved playing with it!

    I had the original made in 1960. Got it for Christmas that year when I was eight years old. Loved taking it apart. The model being shown in this video doesn't hold a candle to the original, which had a big chromed bell on his chest that clanged as he walked. (this could be removed with a single nut if mom had a headache) The key was a much larger key made of metal and also chromed. The small blue fixed wheel in the back of this one was yellow on mine with a small knob that you could set the wheel so he'd turn in small or large circles. There was no whistler. Instead, the mouth would open slowly and then when it suddenly closed it sounded something like the sound a crow would make. It was actually a small party noise maker that made the sound. The gears ran very quietly, not like this noisy thing.

    The first Mr. Machine was 1960. It came with a plastic wrench, and could be taken completely apart except for the chamber housing the spring, and reassembled. The body was transparent yellow, and the wind-up key was metal.
    Revived in 1978, the toy could no longer be disassembled.
    There was a second revival in 1987.

    I was born in 1988, so I never had an opportunity to get one of these (or beg my parents for one, at least). But I would have LOVED it! I loved gears and mechanisms and especially robots as a kid, and seeing all the gears turning as this thing walked around would have fascinated me! I think I would have preferred the 60's version because of the ability to take it apart and put it together, because I was obsessed with taking things apart to see how they worked back when I was a kid.

    Crazy!! Me & the wife were just talking about this and it pops up on You Tube. Had one when I was about 8 in '61. Mine made the squeaking sound. Think we took it apart abt a hundred times. Don't know what happened to it. Good times 👍😎

    I had this toy as a young child of the mid 70's. Mattel made an action figure called "Roboto" in the Masters of The Universe toyline. Seemed like it was inspired by Mr Machine.

    I don't know why they wouldn't allow you to take it apart and put it back together.
    That was the whole idea in the first place! You had a robot that you could build and you got to learn all about mechanics. It was a great concept. Like a puzzle but with gears. An art sculpture that also moved. I can't think of anything better to capture a young kid's imagination and hold their interest.

    I had the 1977 version when I was 3 and I loved it. I didn't realise until now you could take it apart and put it back together, wish I'd known back then as one of his arms was bent jammed into one of the walking wheels so he just went round in a circle.
    Was the tune he whistled "this old man, he played one"?

  • @st.charlesstreet9876
    @st.charlesstreet9876 Před 6 měsíci

    The newer one that you have “ whistles” a certain tune….. and do you know what that tune is?
    The tune is This Old Man! None of my family members could not recognize it but listen closely and you can make it out.😊

    I got one of these for christmas back in the late '70's, but it disappeared a few days later. never knew what happened to it, but i suspect now my older brother may have taken it for target practice with his BB gun.

    I'm an old fart who had the 1961 original version, in which "He talks, he squawks as he walks" Unfortunately he got stored in an attic and the heat melted and deformed his wheels.

      Jerome Bullard Why😆😆? Were you just surprised? Of course I was surprised to that it fully worked, when running it the first time. Most toys sitting 30 years without moving usually lock up some.

    I have two reproduction of the Mister Machine toy. The springs seem to weak to run the toy. I was thinking of installing a spring for an Edison cylinder phonograph. I collect old music machines. I use leather gloves to install them. When I was a boy, I had one. The newer machines are pussy.I’m also a machinist.!I can fabricate a new steel spring housing.Your opinion?

    • @infinitegodaikinbrent8174
      @infinitegodaikinbrent8174  Před 3 lety

      Yes, try it! It might work well as long as it doesn’t put too much force on the whistle bellow.
