Grand Seiko SBGA413 Review: • This Watch Is INCREDIB...
Complete Spring Drive Breakdown: • Spring Drive function
In the last couple of years, Grand Seiko has finally started to get the level of respect and attention it deserves in large part thanks to the brand’s excellent collection of Spring Drive powered sport watches like the SBGA413 I reviewed last year. At the time, I actually asked Grand Seiko for the SBGA415, and I've been curious how the watches would compare to each other ever since. In this video, I'll take a detailed look at the SBGA415 with its silver dial to see how it stacks up to the eye-catching pink dial of the SBGA413.

I don't agree with the statement regarding Grand Seiko's, "these are some of the best finished watches *for the money*." I think many have said, including Mr. Wonderful, and perhaps yourself included, that these are some of the best finished watches, period. No "for the money" qualifier. Don't you agree?

I feel like this model never got the "online love" that the other models did, so really nice to see this beauty up close and personal. I remember when I first saw the snowflake I had the idea that the power reserve ruined the dial of the watch, and now I think of it as a beautiful complication to the dial. I think that's the kind of thing that makes this hobby so great. Seeing your tastes evolve over time. BUT...lets face it...no one wants to see that logo on the caseback 😂 Great presentation today Teddy!

Thanks for the review, Teddy. I have a 413 on order. It takes months.
In a store I compared two watches, a GS and a Rolex at about the 5k price point. While the R was lovely, it just was not as special as the GS in finishing. What I found fascinating was that the R lettering on the dial sometimes seemed to be imperfect, not because it was, but because the reflections interfered with it. This is something that did not happen with the GS.

I wholeheartedly agree with your preference b/t the two. I was at the GS boutique to compare side by side and the most striking difference-arguably they are both stunning-is that the grey dial of the 415 makes the insanely polished and honed daggered hands pop like they're on fire. The lighter silvery dial of the 413 somewhat mutes the hands from contrasting as well. Great call Teddy on highlighting this collection. If you have to own one dress watch under $7k, this is it.

Might look like a decent sports / dress hybrid with a pretty blue dial (nice, but snooze!), but there's a lot of mystery in the overall piece. Sometimes, the more subtle dials have a longer payoff. Often, when I'm wearing the 273, I'll think that something moved off to my left, but it turns out to be that glorious gold seconds hand casting a beam of refected light as it gracefully circles the dial.

After the review of the 413, I was thinking I would prefer the more subdued 415 but seeing the two side by side the 413 just has that extra pop. Great watch, great review. It seems that GS have understood that SS watch cases can be a little top heavy and are moving towards titanium for their newer watches. I have a Quartz GMT which is a superb watch but it does feel top heavy. Making their watches thinner and lighter will undoubtedly make them more popular. GS dials are leading the way (without the use of garish colors). I must admit that I really like the Spring Drive sweep of the blue seconds hand, the thoughtfully large date window and the recessed crown.

One point on GS - I think too much is made of the bracelet and clasp. I own a GS and the bracelet is quite comfortable in my mind. Granted the lack of micro adjustments is a con but as a whole it’s not as bad as people make it out to be. Also note that the Nautilus which trades at $100K+ has pins and collars and i don’t hear complaints about that nearly as much as I do with GS whose watches sell literally at a fraction of that.

I’m just dropping this comment here to say I got a couple of straps from teddy’s store and I cannot believe the quality. I had pretty much only gotten. One from strapsco or Amazon and decided to take the plunge on some of his. They are insane! Very nice quality and look much nicer than what I paid for than! I’ll definitely be a repeat customer and encourage everyone to try at least one.

I recently bought the 413, which is of course a great watch, but I think I should have taken the 415 instead, for legibility. The contrast between the hands and the dial is way better in the 415, especially when you age and your near sight is not what it used to be. By the way, the dial pattern on the 413 and the 415 are exactly the same, only the color changes.

The Four Seasons releases are very nice, but I prefer the sbge249 limited edition of 250 also released in 2019 by Grand Seiko and Timeless Luxury Watches in Plano, Texas. I really like the GMT hand, and the fact that the seconds hand, the GMT hand, and the power reserve hand are all heat blued to make for more color contrast on the dial. Timeless also offers a beautiful dark navy alligator strap made, specifically for this case, in France by Mugatoo. I also prefer the stainless steel case of the sbge249 as it just feels more substantial on my wrist. Either way, Grand Seiko Spring Drive has revolutionized watch movement technology and is tough to beat at any price!

Teddy, what's your opinion on the Citizen Chronomaster? I see it as Citizen's equivalent to Grand Seiko. Any chance we can get a review? 🙂

I just wish the curve of the power reserve matched the curve of the dial. If it was in the top-left corner I think it would fit better. Still a marvellous piece of art.

The power reserve indicator groove (ridged part) can be of different colour may be blue as that of the second hand..

for me the most beautiful part of the watch isnt the incredible dial, but the sharp lugs. they add an subtle industrial feel this watch similar to an engine turned bezel, i love it. i wish they would have made a bracelet with the same sharp angle on the end links to match the lugs. it would add a very striking look to the watch. as it sits tho, the bracelet looks out of place

That Grand Seiko seal on the display case back is based on the Grand Seiko medallion that used to be on the casebacks of Grand Seikos in the 1960s and 1970s. It's cool how they're trying to work that in, but I also am a little bit sad about not being able to see the movement quite as well.

I believe I am now overcoming my prejudice against this watch brand. I am influenced by the influencers! Mine eyes are opened!
I had a good hard look at the GS range in a high end boutique window (I cannot afford to go in!!) I think it is the first time I have looked at a wristwatch in a long time with enlightened fascination.
A watch becomes a friend, and my Cartiers give me pleasure to this day. However the surface detailing and the movement of the Grand Seiko wrist watch 'spring drive' is astounding and I found myself wondering how rewarding such a wrist presence might be.

I would really like a spring drive and was about to pull the trigger. When I checked about servicing I fine parts and service are only available from Seiko. Is this really true, if so, it's a deal breaker for me no matter how much I like them.

that's absurd, alot of these luxury brands have trash distribution, very disappointing
i'm in Canada and wanted to source this model (it's a USA exclusive), they told me buzz off*
there are some great dealers on chrono24 that offer discounted leftover models on USA exclusives like this, might be worth checking them out

My only gripe with Grand Seiko is that there is a obvious disparity of attention given between the dial and the rest of the watch. Dial is right up there with even the finest Pateks. Bracelet and clasp on the other hand... to me it's hard to differentiate it from a casual $200 Tissot in terms of design and feel. Case design is pretty boring and lugs fit weird around the wrist.

Great points. I had a SBGA373 and immediately parted with it for that reason.

  • @enriqueparedespinel1694

Grand Seiko will become THE luxury watch in this decade, Spring Drive is the most innovative movement in the industry in the las 25 years, but they have to stop putting the power reserve on their beautiful dials and the GS logo blocking the view on the caseback. My grail watch is a GS, SBGY003. Hope to see it in the channel.
