- Resilience: A Medical Journey is an IndianRaga collaboration with a concept led by Harvard Medical School students Maheetha Bharadwaj and Dipal Nagda and choreography led by Swathi Jaisankar. This is a story of a patient (Swathi Jaisankar) and spouse (Dipal Nagda) who receive a life-altering diagnosis of cancer from an oncologist (Maheetha Bharadwaj). It includes a visual representation of cancer growth and uncontrolled cellular proliferation, all depicted through Bharatanatyam. Music Production by Mahesh Raghvan, Mridangam, Jathi recitation, and Kanjira by Akshay Anantapadmanabhan, and Flute by Lalit Talluri.
The scene begins with a couple dancing in frolic when one starts to show signs of illness. The partner receives a phone call asking both to urgently come to the doctor’s office. At the appointment, the physician performs a medical history and physical exam and conveys that the patient’s imaging results suggest a diagnosis of lung cancer. The next section is an interpretation of the growth and development of cancer; three healthy, uniform cells are depicted before one cell mutates, replicates, and wreaks havoc on the body. Finally, we return to the patient, partner, and physician as each experiences their individual and intertwined emotional reactions to the diagnosis.
