  • PART 3
So what have we learnt from this experiment of using non-genuine Sill sections?
Well, they are very cheap and much more affordable than the genuine sill sections.
However, they do require more work as there are no pre-stamped holes for the under trays or the jacking pad.
Also, the NS sill (front edge under the wing) seen at @0:36 seems to be stamped in a non-original shape.
In hindsight, we would have cut this area and re-aligned it into an OEM shape.
In this case, we didn't and we'll let the bodyshop use a filling technique to align it to an OEM parallel finish, but in the future, the next one we do will require more time on the NS to make it as OEM as possible.
All in all, we think they are a fairly good option and are approx 80% OEM accurate.
If we put in more effort on the NS sill front edge (now realising the NS stamped sill isn't perfect) we think we could get that to 90% OEM accuracy (visual effect).
REMEMBER, this isn't the full and finished look.
The E39 now needs to go to a bodyshop to have the final professional exterior (bodycoloured) paintwork carried out.
Many thanks to Technicians Luke & Dave who spent several days on this project in their own time and by agreeing to be the guinea-pig for these non-genuine sill sections, and allowing us to document the process.

Shame BMW don't make a decent repair panel(s) for the bits that actually rust, not including the pillars!

It’s interesting to hear how you found welding the cheap metal panel. I always wondered how they would weld compared to the OEM metal. I’d be curious to see how the aftermarket panel metal holds up to corrosion

Nice job! As a suggestion, keep the plastic undercover panels off, they do more harm than good. Saves weight, too 😂

Guys I like your videos so much! Regarding this repair - I would prefer genuine BMW parts, I don't have any trust in this unknown metal.

Amazing work as usual. How are you sure there is no issue with the amount of metal that was corroded on the jacking points? If even a little corroded metal was removed in the process would that jacking point no longer be as structurally strong as intended? Not sure what tolerances the engineers put in but just wondering how much weaker it is now.

I'm not them but one thing I suspect about BMWs is that they WAY overbuilt their jack points. For a typical car with reinforced pinch welds as jacking points, it doesn't take much rot to make the jack point completely useless. Coming from Japanese and American cars, the first thing that struck me was the integrity of the jack points on BMWs.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents and Redish I'm sure has more to say on that.
