I love the fact the devil here is pretty accurate to older devil portrayls. Appearances of him are more based on religious fear and him being a seriously horrible being. But a lot of the time, the Devil would steal your soul through silly stuff like banjo competitions to which he'd loose because some dude in overalls found a quick loophole. So him being a musical, gloat-y, confident yet outwittable kind of person is super accurate and fun. Like, carnival games actually sounds like something the devil would catch souls with haha
If I remember right medieval era had Devil as more buffoonish person who often was fooled or humiliated. Then protestantism and arrived and Devil became much more scary and insiduous character. This portrayal mixes humorous with actually scarily competent schemer. Of course there are stories of Devil's artistic ability: legend says that Tartini encountered Devil in his sleep and they had a fiddle contest. Tartini's "Devil Trill Sonata" is his pale, utterly insignificant memory of what he heard Devil play. I guess modern view makes Devil buffoonish, but horrifyingly competent schemer if he notices mockery.

Everything about this show feels so nostalgic. The art style, the animation, even the music. Even though the show doesn’t perfectly follow rubberhose throughout the show, it’s clear how much love and passion went into this show.
As much as I would have loved it to follow rubberhose style exactly it kinda is a good hybrid of modern and old style techniques. Would assume it’s down to time and money that they didn’t go true rubberhose style but there are a couple of moments littered through the series where it goes full rubberhose

The music from Nightmare was written/composed by Danny Elfman, who was a big Cab Callaway fan. Oogie Boogie's theme was originally extremely similar to Minnie the Moocher, a song by Cab that was featured in Betty Boop, which Cuphead was inspired by (among other things). So both songs have some similarities as a result
