🥞 IF you want coconut syrup for your pancakes, do it! Otherwise, I'd stick to the ube jam you can get at Filipino stores
I love your videos so much :)
Just compare the ingredients? Wouldve loved to have read the difference
Thanks for sticking up with the original Ube!
It looks like kalamay. But kalamay is more sticky and more vibrant than that.
A large problem I saw in Trader Joe's products is they will substitute ube with spirulina and it doesn't respond the same way in cooking and isn't a good flavor match!
I have heard-but haven't confirmed for myself yet- they've also used Japanese purple sweet potato instead of ube, which also yields a different flavor and reacts differently than ube.
My friend has more access to Trader Joe's "ube" products and I've sent her real ube (read: pinoy/Filipino) products to compare and the Japanese purple sweet potato and this is mainly on her take.
This is sort of disappointing because for many Non Asian Americans this will be their only exposure to Ube and they will have no idea this is nothing like ube at all.
We tried this and it really upset my daughter because she had her mouth ready for ube and didn't receive it. It actually sent my Mother in law to the Asian market in some sort of trance to fix the inaccuracy by making 3 versions of ube jam. One was pretty thin, but she used Sweetened condensed milk not coconut milk to preserve the Ube flavor.
I guess it wasnt a waste of money, it gave us 3 straight days of Ube food because it offended our Pinoy home.
The ube ice cream from Trader Joe’s also has like. A coffee type flavor? Idk it’s weird, I’ll definitely stick to just forking out the like $13 for a gallon of Magnolia brand ube ice cream 😅
BWHHAHAHAA here i am thinking ube halaya is already spreadable???
Ube Jam from Baguio trumps this crap.
And their ube cookies just tasted like cinnamon 🤪 Come on, Trader Joe’s!!
Well your offensive to the Asian community and why would you live in a country that you do not like and you are just teaching your child Asian hate and spreading that hate to everyone else in the country because you people with your white heritage you are so racist you people are Judgmental and support police brutality and my sources tell me that I should give you the karma that you deserve and have you reported!!! Thank and goodbye
No clearly it should be called JELLYFISH JELLY 😂😂💜💜
I knew someone else would think of that too lol
such a missed marketing opportunity on Trader Joe's behalf imo
After watching your videos, so many times with the Uba may I suggest to you that you make your own syrup and some of the things you make and put them on the market for others to enjoy not just to market?
Many Americans would enjoy your creation instead of making their own, especially when it’s hard to get a hold of in some places.
Some will make their own but for them to enjoy, let’s face it America is extremely lazy they want it now and if you made it already now you little jars they would be so happy and appreciative
On a sidenote, your pocketbook would be overflowing 🙏🙏🙏💰💰💰✌🏻💜✨
YES 😂
SpongeBob.
Honestly I'm not surprised. Because ube is such a delicate and mild flavour in general and really specific to the Philippines, I'm really doubtful if a large chain store can either replicate or source it well. When I went to Seattle a couple weeks ago I was able to pick up a couple boxes of the ube mochi pancakes (I'm from Canada, we don't have TJ's), kind of had that expectation going in especially with people saying it tastes more like coconut but they were still really yummy overall! If you made your own with real ube I'm sure that they'd taste even stronger.
Agree, I feel like unless you make something that’s mostly comprised of ube the delicate flavor will be lost. That’s the problem with a lot of ube flavored things.
agreed
Idk where in Canada you are, but I've seen actual ube products from the Philippines in various Asian supermarkets in Toronto, as well as ube itself. I've heard it can also be bought from Whole Foods and Real Canadian Superstore, but we never shopped much in those places, so Idk
@@raerohan4241 I'm from BC! And we do have a lot of our own mom-n-pop Filipino stores here that do sell ube products, absolutely. Though I did visit Toronto last year and a friend took us to Seafood City in Scarborough, we don't really have a Filipino store that's to that scale in size so it was pretty neat!
I had a few ube things in Hawaii. Still don’t know what it tastes like. I don’t doubt they were authentic, so I’m concerned that there just isn’t enough flavor in Ube to honestly rave about.
Why do all of the Trader Joe’s ube products taste like coconut 😭
Well to me the ice cream has a weird coffee-ish flavor so at least that’s different right? 🫠 hahaha
@@rabbit-rabbit-boythat's gross, maybe it was cross contaminated by their coffee ice cream
Their tea cookies just tasted like cinnamon 🙃
Lol for reals, omg
oof, and i heard the waffle mix was pretty good 🫤
I just bought this yesterday and thought the same thing. So I made ube pancakes and added ube extract to this jam for an added darker color. Still tasted like syrup but looked more authentic and on top of the ube pancakes it worked ok :)
Just be made in America ok and by only products if that makes you feel better but your missing out because Asian food is good so chill
Absolutely agree. I was so disappointed when i tried it
I have this spread and while no, it's not true ube jam, it helps to refrigerate it to at least save the texture. When it's cold it's much easier to spread and I think of it more as a vanilla-y, vconutty buttery spread than a true ube spread. I still like it!
That looks exactly like the ooze Ivan Ooze spits up in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Movie. It also looks exactly like the purple goop they accidentally make in Eddie’s Million Dollar Cook Off.
I was just about to say that 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Was looking for this comment!
LMFAOOOO YES!!
this
To make it thicker ur supposed to refrigerate it😊
I just bought this and it’s really too sweet for me. But I plan on putting a little in some tea and maybe baking with it sometime. I agree with the butterscotch assessment!
I just tried this out for the first time yesterday, pretty excited after seeing all the delicious ube things on your channel! The texture changes a lot when it's cold, more like a lemon curd consistency. I've mostly been eating it with pretzels, and it's got a strong buttery, almost caramely flavor imo. A *hint* of ube, but not what I was hoping for. Gonna have to look for proper ube jam next time I'm at the local markets.
You described butterscotch 😂
I haven't opened up the jar yet. I've been trying a lot of trader joes ube things. The flavor of most of the ube food has a lot of coconut. Which I'm fine with I always try to combine coconut and Ube because it really helps bring out the flavor. But the Trader Joe's ube has too much of a coconut flavor. The waffle pancake mix is delicious but has a strong coconut flavor. So i added more ube extract to make the flavor come out more and to make it more purple. I've had the Ube pretzels the ube tea cookies the ube pancake waffle mix and they all taste heavily of coconut. I think as for someone who plays with Ube flavors a lot. Its in the right direction. But they need to use less coconut flavors and truly bring out the ube. Give the customers a more unique less sweet flavor of ube. Of course the ube treats are popular at trader joes but the customers need more of a unique experience of ube
Agree. I really like the waffle mix but knew in the back of my head it was ube¡lite.
Okay I am glad I looked at it at Trader Joe’s and put it back lol. If I wanted sweet coconut cream/ butterscotch-ish liquid, I’d look for that specifically
Gotta love Filipino reviews. The local Filipino store is always the best benchmark :)
Not me being 1 week from turning 25 and simultaneously wanting to buy this SOLELY because I want to pretend I’m in SpongeBob. 😂
Buy a burger and put some in the middle
Good sheperd's ube halaya 🤤
So basically it is a Singaporean/Malaysian Kaya spread coloured purple
Yea but more countries
Yes correct but kaya has gone up on price this u be must be cheaper...
My sister got the ube waffle/pancake mix from trader joes and we put the ube ice cream on them. It was amazing
Honestly I love this stuff and i put it on anything (toast included). My favorite thing is to mix it in my yogurt. Would be perfect if it was branded different
You didnt get the point 😆 it doesnt taste ube, shes not saying its not delicious. Lol
@ishie19.78 that's literally what they said
the first time I ever had an ube-flavored anything was at a Philipino ice cream shop.
best flavor ever hands down
If this is a coconut syrup, they need to rename it as "purple coconut spread" instead of ube spread.
Interestingly ube puree is the first ingredient listed and it also has coconut cream in it.
Wait omg now I wanna try smth else with ube bc I thought it was just overwhelmingly sweet
E crying when you opened the Sky Flakes. My coworkers used to bring these home for me from the Philippines 💕
I'm happy to see this because I tried it and I loved it! But I knew there was no way that was what ube tasted like, I'm pretty sure condensed coconut milk was the first ingredient
Thank you for testing this out!! I almost got it last time I was at Trader Joe’s and ultimately decided against it because it seemed too good to be true. Have you seen the Ube Mochi pancake mix they have? I’d love to know more about that one too!
I tried the Ube cookies and they were AMAZESHITS!!!
Why does it look like the purple Ivan ooze in the mighty morphing power ranger movie lol 😂
I put it in my oatmeal it's super good that way
Last year, I was so excited when I saw Ube Jam at TJ’s, I bought 3 jars anticipating it was going to be amazing. Unfortunately, it was not good and too sweet. I returned all of them.
The demand for Ube in the Philippines is not very high. Filipinos only want it when they are abroad. Because Ube is not abundant. They have Ube in Bohol island and the nearby islands alao have Ube jams in their culture.
@@eduardochavacanoWrong dude. Many want it but cooking ube halaya requires hard work. Many are too lazy to cook it.
@@eduardochavacanothe demand is actually high. But growing it is a long process. The demand peaks during the "ber" months and that's usually the time you see many selling them because they can make profit of ube.
@@eduardochavacano
As someone who makes ube halaya every new years eve, I guarantee that ube is very in demand but because it's to tiring to make it
A lot of people don't make it even if ube is available in the market.
Every time I make ube halaya it takes me hours of mixing to cook it
It's a big commitment to make it 😂
@@eduardochavacanomisinformation.. Ube is very in demand especially during holidays. I saw my family in Candelaria make it in big woks,, they sell it to their neighbours. In the market the classic packaging was in foil, oblong shape but now you can see them in reusable Tupper wares..
I am so glad I grew up in Okinawa it opened me up to so many different foods I would have never tried living in America
I tried it, and I absolutely love ube. With that being said, it smelled and tasted exactly like Play-Doh.
I gotta say though, TJ’s Ube Pancakes are SOO good, they’re one of my favorite products
I hope Trader Joe's sees this and does better.
Excellent detail in this review 👏
Good Shepherd supremacyyy! the best UBE JAM in the Philippines.. you should try ittt
It doesnt look good tbh
My friend made the ube mochi pancakes/waffles from TJ’s for me the other day and I specifically remember commenting on how coconutty they were lol, this is validating
Happy they suggested this to me as I was eyeing the ube jam there and wanted to know before I purchased it thanks for the video ❤❤❤
Looks delicious!
maybe called it kaya is malaysia favorite kind of spread is sooo good when you spread it on toasted bread 🤤🤤🤤🤤
DAMN STOP DAY DREAMING HANAN 😭
THANK YOU. I was planning to go out of my way to buy this.
Can we get a close up of the Asian store Ube jam please?
Ivan ooze’s plans to get into a big box store was a success! 🎉🎉🎉
Because of ur posts I got myself a pastilla de leche (ube flavor), it was sooo good!!! Had to order it in but it was worth it. My siblings and parents also loved it
Omg skyflaaaakes 🤤😂 so good! The butter cream sandwich ones are sooo good
Thank you i needed to know and now I’ll just order the one you’ve shown here
Its reminding me of Ivan's Ooze from the Power Ranger movie. 😂
instantly reminded me of the purple stuff that came out of that one thing in a power rangers movie 🤣 someone please tell me they remember as well
i love that i took the correct educated guess on which ube jam to buy 😭😭😭😭💖
My step dad is half Filipino. I don't know how I lived so long without the Filipino grocers in my area. Trader Joe's can't beat mom and pop.
You have to try the ube jam from Good Shepherd in Baguio.
You should try the ube mochi pancake/ waffle mix from Trader Joe’s
I saw this the other day, and I thought about you. I was also considering whether I should get it. I'm glad I didn't. Thanks for your honest review.
Now I will have to go try to find Ube jam, it is one of my favorite flavors. I didn't know the jam existed.
Edit: ube halaya from *dragongfly* brand
I tried ube jam for the first time the other day. It was delicious but can anyone confirm if it should taste like a date? To me that’s what I’m tasting (amazingly good) but I don’t know if it’s as it’s suppose to be. Definitely very purple and tasty though omg!
The pancakes from the same line of Ube stuff taste like coconut, too. I put protein powder in mine which changes the texture, but I think they're likely REALLY sweet when made per the box recipe.
This is one of my favorite products that I buy every year.
Ngl I'd love to try real ube jam but that does look like a fun-colored coconut topping for pancakes, might honestly look into getting that just for that 😂
I wanna try it for pancakes
The ube ice cream is SO good
This is the reason why people learn to dislike certain food when they had bad experience on first try especially children. And they won't want to try again.
ube jam is also kinda scarce here in manila, most of the time we can have it when we go to Baguio.
I tried the pancakes. …. So good!
Can you make a video dedicated to genuine Ube jam?
I don’t really like sweets too much but I feel like this would be good as a light drizzle on some vanilla bean ice cream.
the consistency reminds me of kaya a coconut based pandan jam where I'm from when you said it tasted like coconut I'm guessing it's made using a coconut base similar to kaya
They do that a lot with “foreign flavors” they put in a little so they can technically say that’s what it is and then they just absolutely drench it in something more “palatable”
It’s so people can feel like they’re being adventurous without actually being challenged by something new
Somebody send Good Shepherds ube jam to that store and show them the genuine article. 🤣
GOOD shepher fire af
Valid review! Hope somebodyat TJs is watching.
They definitely shouldve sell it as "jellyfish jelly"😂
Ah so happy to see this! I’ve been wondering to try it but very iffy to buy any of their Ube products. Thanks for saving me some money! That looks like a runny purple glue 😂
I would like to know where I can get the jam that you usually bought, because I had ube ice cream and it was delicious.
This reminds me of that 90s power ranger movie with Ivan ooze the villain.
As a European Ube fan, for anyone who has the means to try it. Filipino ube jam is PEAK on scones with clotted cream. I... often just eat it on buttered toast admittedly, but still.
OMG I HAVE THE SAME CRACKERS THERE SOOOO GOOD
This is relieving to hear. I got their ube pancake mix and it tasted like coconut. I dont like coconut at all so there is still a chance I will like real ube.
Best Ube Jam is from Mountain Maid (Good Sheperd) in Baguio -IMO. Otherwise just make your own halaya. I hope Trader Joes revises their version of Ube Jam just cause the wider public should not confuse ube flavor with straight sugar.
I put Ube extract in my grimace shake. It improved the taste for sure.
Oh wow you’re sticking to the authentic Filipino jam? Must be so much better than all of us
I've recently been a fan of ube. Never heard for tried it till a couple months ago
Good Shepherd's Ube Jam from Baguio stills the best ❤
try ube pancakes from trader joe’s
This looks tasty! but for those who don't want to spend alot or simply don't have a TJ's near them: try looking at any Asian or Caribbean grocery store. They usually have ube paste which will be a bit thicker because it's potato paste but its usually cheaper. If you want something of the above consistency, mix it with coconut cream. If you mix a jar of ube paste and a can of cream of coconut you'll get about two jars of this for the same price as the above product and with no added sugars and dyes and other junk. ^.^
Once up on a time her channel was ube
Oh my god I had no idea there was ube jam I need to get some
My first introduction to ube was at an ice cream shop in Oakland that my dad and lil sister used to always go to! I can’t even remember the name, but it was very small. When I was 8, they got the ube flavor and after I tried it, I fell in love ❤ my dad and mom taught me to research and respect other cultures, so I started looking into other forms of the purple potato. IMO, this jam doesn’t look good at all 😂😅 all they had to do was some more research 😅
Looks like something for ice cream topping
I love the manufacturing date 😂
that’s the Ooze Ivan Ooze was giving away in the Mighty Morphin movie
The first person to come up with a chain of Filipino food spots is going to be a billionaire. It is a huge market with world-class cuisine and nobody has successfully done it. I seriously think it could be what Japanese sushi was during the 1980s
Initially was glad that ube went mainstream but also disappointed when companies try to replicate it only for it to be way off
AHH! I should've watched this before buying it 😭😭
I do miss the ube spread from baguio
Expensive af.
Drizzle it on the inside of a glass. The add a spoonful to piñata colada mix. Makes a tasty beautiful cocktail 🍹
The cookies are 🔥
good to know. if i hadnt come across this video, for sure I'd buy it if i see it at TJ for the first time
LMAO i FELT this
Trader Joe's ube stuff (to me) was very sweet
I was fortunate to be introduced to Ube before I started working at Trader Joe's. When I first tried the ube products I couldn't have been more disappointed. I thought it tasted like coconut and movie theater popcorn.
