How to Grow Seeds for your Aquarium with NO Dry Start in Tank | NO Heat Easy Setup

- Last month, when I got my new Pea Puffers, I bought a beautiful tissue culture plant pot of Rotala rotundifolia. Although the convenience of a nice pot of plant is heavily favored, the price is not (some pots can be upwards of $20 per pot). After my rotala grew out, I felt like my nano tank was still missing something- a foreground carpeting plant! So, after a bit of research, I came across these little inexpensive seeds. These are found on Amazon and Aliexpress- they're readily available, cheap, and seem simple! Until I read the reviews... Lots of people claimed that their seeds melted, grew mold, and were simply not growing.
I wanted to solve this challenge- and luckily in my biology class, I had learned about seed germination (discussed in the video). Although a dry start method in a brand new tank is conventional, I did not have a new tank. So, I used what I had and this is what I came up with (spoiler: it was a success)! I encourage you all to try this out, it is a fun, inexpensive project with a great reward after 15 days.

Additional Notes:
-Germination (dry start) is a crucial step in order to sprout these seeds (often skipped)
-Keep the seeds under the light in the substrate for 8-10 hours a day
-Use a standard LED light at a minimum of 4.3 Watts
-Be sure the plant seeds fully sprout before submerging fully in the aquarium
Thank you so much for 33.9k subs!

Scam! Do not purchase these seeds. It is well known in China that these seeds do not grow aquatic plants, but the Western market has yet to learn this, so the Chinese are still running this scam
Scammer,
@@MattyP650 bruh maybe u don't realise that bcoz something looks similar doesn't mean that's the same product
@@MattyP650 Check the reviews, it's not a scam. It's the seeds of Hygrophila sp. The seeds gel up after adding water and have long leaves.
I Order the same seeds
I love the way you explain everything in detail and don't waste time. And you show everything. It's a really nice video to follow. Also like the voice it's very calming!
I grew these in a glass bowl and kept the bowl going for over 6 months so that I could build a Betty tank. It was fun. I did use a heater tho. I didn’t use anything but water, aquatic soil, heat, and a sunny window. Once they grew I filled it with water and added a bubbler for a cute little water garden.
Your video makes growing fish tank plants from seeds less daunting Thank you for all the information, its much appreciatived
Love it! Your plants looks so green and healthy.
Good job.
Thank you for watching ^_^
Amazing video! Thanks so much!! I bought a pack of seeds a month ago and put all the seeds into the substrate in the aquarium and then got the aquarium going and guess what - no blooms. Knowledge is power; wish I had seen this before. Thanks again.
You will drown seeds. They need to germinate first.
Thank you for making this. So few aquarists makes videos on this topic and I've tried and failed to start dwarf hairgrass seedlings recently.
In my country (Malaysia), some or most of the "aquascapers" called the seeds as a "seed scam" lol. I can't deny that the seeds are sometimes wrongly labeled or probably not a fully Aquatic plant (I'm not sure in this part), but it's indeed slightly cheap. However, I don't recommend if you're setting up for a main display tank or something. And agreeing to your statement, the seeds are not easily to germinate, which most people find it difficult. What to expect if you don't know what you're doing isn't it?
For the tissue culture part, tissue culture is actually cheap for the amount of plants you receive. However, it's quite delicate and for an unstable tank, it can highly reduce the chance in growing them
For potted plants, are affordable, might be slightly expensive (depend on species), but it's stable since the plants are already big, and rooted. But that doesn't count for the plants whether it's emmerse or submerge before.
Nak tanya grass ape yg okay ye?
I'm from Malaysia and I can agree and most things are wrongly labeled or mostly a scam
EXCELLENT VIDEO WITH GRAT OUTCOME AND THAT EVEN IN COLD COUNTRY. I AM FROM LONDON AND SPRING STARTED SO DEFINATLEY TRY THIS
Please keep us updated on this tank, I would like to know more about these seeds, great job btw, keep it up. 😊👍
Yes, we're keen to see it's growth afterwards!
Thanks so much and will do! ^_^
@@Fish4Ever thank you❤
the plant are most likely dead by now
the new 1s planted in this video
Oh! Man.! I felt sleepy after watching and hearing your soothing voice.Great video. 😊👍🏻
I grew these inside a vase about the size of a large pickle jar and planted a java plant (forgot the name). No filter and no heater, just added 3 cherry shrimp. We are on about day 5 with the cherry shrimp and they seem to be loving it! Planning to do 5 or 10% water changes about every two weeks and see how it goes. The "carpet" plant grows tall and the shrimp love hanging out in it😀
Replying after a year of the comment, how did it go?
@@mochi8060 I don't recommend these seeds. They grow crazy fast, and are not "carpet" as advertised. They grew so much that I couldn't see anything inside the glass "vase" fish bowl. I ended up scooping out the shrimp and yanking the whole mess of growth by the roots and starting over in a new tank.
Great video...👍
This tutorial is flawless!! Thank you for being so detailed yet to the point.
She has overcomplicated it to the point no one will try it.
its faked seed its not real carpeting plant if they grow over40cm in your tank
@@JakeSlater Really? SOME aspects of being an aquarist require caution and patience and personally, I think she achieved the right balance. In over 30 years I had given up on seeds and just used potted aquarium plants and cultures; that is until I saw this! I have 5 small plastic containers with green buds sprouting all over the place and in about 5 more days they will be transplanted into my Fluval Flex aquarium that houses my Plakat Betta. Should look pretty cool when it's all done.
Yes I tried this 1 year back.. But good suggestions. Well done
You're so well spoken, great video
Nice work very excited to see your next vids
Hands down best seed video out there! Thanks so much for sharing!
This was actually very helpful thank you
Absolutely would love to see updates on this. Looks great
The update is that this doesn't work for very long and is a scam
Those are some great ideas 💡! Will try 😁
Thanks a lot, that is extremely helping
this is the best 6 piece bamboo tapas ceramic set ad I've ever seen
Haha😆 It wasn’t an ad for the pots. But thanks for watching:)
That’s smart I can’t even lie thank you I got some and was Phinne do so much work but now I’m just gone do this and now I have enough for all my tanks
I love it. Lol she says "Very gently place it like that.....*Plops it down*"
Be careful, many of these seeds are actually dwarf hygro, not a real carpeting plant. Dwarf hygro will grow like CRAZY. Keep us updated!
i found out that the hard way. took a full tank and substrate removal and a full restart on the aquarium. it looked grate until its all changed shape
My seeds are not even growing
What type of carpeting plant should you use for a tank?
Yep they do grow crazily fast!
exactly. i used it as carpeting plant for my shrimp tank. weeks later it started to stick its head out of the aquarium. lol definitely not a carpet plant.
It grew shorter due to more light. They don’t have to “reach” as far to get what they need.
Same thing I said to myself when she said older light

Thank you so much for posting updates this is so helpful
Truly nice work!
Looks like Monte Carlo. The perfect carpet plant. 👌
before starting, put a coffee filter in the cup. then add substrate, then seeds.
Very interesting video. Thanks. I subscribed to your channel today. 👍
You're back :D
I love your brine shrimp that you showed us in the other video
Let’s go you finally posted
After two years - do you still promote these seeds?
I literally just fold the seeds into a paper towel and soak it and let it sit for a day and they usually are sprouted i love your video in going to try your way now . Those little puffers are so flipping adorable what are they called exactly? i want to find them. What is best food and temp for them? I've never had one but omg i have to now it's like a fish with a personality
Great video, thank you!
Nice and thanks for sharing 👍
I'm in love with ur aquarium 💞 it's great
I have planted tank with anubias and java ferns. Would you recommend flourish as a good fertilizer?
Holy crap CZcams, I literally just got my seeds today and I was like how do I do this? AND BOOM this video shows up on my feed? DAMN that's fire! 👌
🙌🏼 Love that!
I started those same seeds in a 29 gallon tank adding water after they were well sprouted. Carpeted the entire tank beautifully. Seeds seem to be a mix of several varieties of plants. Unfortunately they quickly grew way too large to be a carpeting type plant and over time I allowed them to die off by not offering any nutrition. If you're going to try some from seeds then I would suggest you use a small container and keep the plants under control in your tank to avoid something you'll likely have to remove later.
could you make an update vid on the carpet plants? on how theyr doing? thanks
Good video!
Just got a 2 pack from Amazon delivered. 9 bux. :) gunna start it soon. Ty for this!
Yay! Exciting to watch the plant progressively grow
Hello, greetings from Brazil! I loved your video. Please, what´s this fish that comes in right in the very begining of this video? Please, I loved it. Thank you so very much.
I had got these from Amazon a year ago and definitely with some keeping in the run and spraying them with water made them carpet VERY WELL.......and then my pleco ruined it all.
I bought these seeds previously. I did a dry start in my tank with no fertilizer and they looked amazing for a hot minute. Then they started growing taller and I realized they were not a carpet plant at all. Every time I cleaned my tank the plant would get up rooted. Eventually it all came up and I yanked it out. Maybe I will try again, but put them in the back.
Aquarium seeds are a scam, you'll have this same result every time.
@@Trashalchemy Oh yes, I figured that out already. Threw them away.
thank you
about you tanks
Exquisite and convenient to watch and display
May I know its measurements?
My greetings :)
Can you have an update for these cute carpet plants, are they covered the entire tank by now ?
hi :) thanks for making this video, i was wondering, can I use seaweed fertilizer instead?
I rooted mine on rockwool then trimmed the excess material and buried it with sand just enough to hid the wool. Been fine for over a month now.
mine is going to be growing at the beginning of my tank set-up.
That was helpful.
Good thing I found this video. I was about to stick those bad boys straight into the sub.
So it’s been a year since this videos. How did those seeds hold up?
Did the same thing today, before that I dry started but no success, I hope they grow, I don’t care which plant it is, I’m gonna trim them if they grow taller
Very Nice!😇🙏
Thank you :)
Your soundtrack is beautiful
Nice video, do you have any update to show us how the seeds are doing?
Thanks
I used the leafy dwarf grass, ling hair and dwarf hair grasses from Amazon. Poured them right into my already established tank. All I have is lava rock at the bottom of the tank. I use api leaf zone. Two days later I got off work and the leaves already formed and turning green. The long hair grass was already 3 inches tall 2 days later in my vampire crab terrarium. The short hair grass im.not sure. Haven't checked it in 3 days. It will probably just blend in with the long hair grass. My crab tank does have fluval stratum, crab poop and neo shrimp poop as fertilizer though. My fish tank has 2 mollies, 2 guppies, a small pleco and a baby red eared slider.
ممنون برای ویدئوی خوبتون
She said don't cook the seeds, but yet. She puts them directly under the frickin light.
Thank you 🙏🏻
nice tank. how do you keep your plant so greens? my not very green, faded green 😜
"Just going to very gently.. **plop**" 😂😂
This channel is sick 🔥
good idea
Hi can I use a finer type gravel ? I have a gravel but it’s just quite fine would it still work
Hi @Fish4Ever, I followed your methods carefully to germinate and grow this Monte Carlo micranthemum but as I'm entering day 8 of the dry start, I can smell the moldy smell after unwrapping for misting ... It's a small Betta tank ... SOS, please help. Can I still save it?
Hi, may i know what are those u grow floating in your guppy tank? Hope u are still into aqua scaping, I'm super new in all this and really appreciate some advices here and there. Thanks!
I purchased microseeds from amazon 2 months ago and germinated the fluval on my 20 gallon tank. I followed all your steps like cover with saran wrap, led light for 12 hours and spray with flourish daily. It sprouted beautifully and I started adding water after 2 months. Now the problem is that, most of the microplants are floating on top of the tank since my fish are trying to eat it especially my corys. Is this normal? Like the floating and stuff?
It’s almost like this is a box opening of the cups lmao
Bruh you started talking and I was like “a girl?!?” I’m glad to see a girl in aquatic plant game all the videos I’ve seen have been guys.
Missed your posts! Hope all is well with you!
Thank you for keeping up ^_^
@@Fish4Ever you’re most welcome 😊
i`d appreciate some advice please. i`ve started 3 trays of grass seed and i`ve put some clingfilm over the top. They`ve germinated and grown enough, that their starting to touch the clingfilm/wrap at the top and i don`t want the grass to bend over, so will it be ok to remove the clingwrap and let it grow upwards as long as i keep everything moist?
Hi I saw on your Instagram had to come as soon as I saw
Thanks for watching and following my IG:)
How did you make the lid for your tanks ? Also can I get your light info link ? Thanks in advance …
Soooo cute 😘
hello, what kind of light is that on your tank and what kind of filter are you using
?
I am waiting form 5 months ❤️
thanks
Woahh it looks great! I wonder if the plant requires co2, I’ve always wanted to try this but I’ve been scared of the plants melting.
Thanks :) At the moment they’re not in any CO2 so we will see how this plays out after a couple weeks/ months
Don’t do it all that stuff is a scam if you think about it if they have seeds why would they sell you the potted plants
@@lizardman2477 cos people like to buy things ready to use and will pay for it. If most terrestrial plants can grow from cuttings then why do people still pay for full plants at the shops?
@@giangpham8499 What's the scientific name of this plant? Why isn't that the beginning and end of the conversation? This isn't some undiscovered never been seen before plant. Like with every other plant you'll ever buy, this plant has been thoroughly studied by scientists and the parameters for taking care of it are very clearly defined and public. Knowing the ACTUAL NAME of the plant is the gateway to learning about it and that's why you wont find it anywhere in this video or any for sale postings. If they told you what it actually was you'd be able to just look it up and find out immediately it isn't an aquatic plant. When you buy plants anywhere else you don't say, give me that purple thing, or give me some of those "inexpensive seeds," you say "give me a French Hydrangea" or "I want a Golden Barrel Cactus." Why? because you care enough to spend money on it and (usually) that means you've read about how to take care of it. Don't be fooled by the "update" video either. It could be replanted, they could drain the tank so the plant grows normally then refill it for the video, or most likely, just take a video one or two days later then upload it at the "8th month mark". Look, you buy cheap, you're gonna buy twice, and when the ammonia bomb goes off in your tank from all the plants dying, you're gonna buy new fish too.
I dry started a tank with these exact seeds and after adding water to the tank they grew kind of tall and the undergrowth "melted" and I think it caiused a ton of hair algae. After I pulled it all up, my algae went away.
Is it necessary to keep in dark place fr 1st 24hrs . ?
Can we keep in normal natural sunlight ?
Do I need to spray on the fertilizer solution every day or just the two times that you showed?
That's Micranthemum - Monte Carlo or Mini Leaf - and thank you for the tutorial!
Can you please show us update on how its doing?
This hygrophelia polisperma. It grows to 12-19 inches
Love it
Do you have a guppy in with your pea puffers? I was told pea puffers would kill my guppies. I love pea puffers but don't want to set up a tank just for them, so I appreciate your answer.
Can be planted directly in the tank?
when refering to light is it a uv light? I have lizards so the type of light matters to them, im just not sure what type to use for my plants
nice
Hey I wonder if that is monte Carlo? Does that plants need co2 to stay healthy?
Nice
I am using your affiliate link for the seed. You should put the link to the substrate too. Thanks.
Hi! Thank you for doing this. Can we please have an update on your monte carlos.
The update is she got hygrophila polysperma. A stem plant.
Where can I find that awesome tapas set. There has to be a link!!
So I was planning to do this but I do not have any substrate with fertilizer in it can I just use fine gravel
