Back in the days when Corrie was worth watching. Great writing and a wonderful cast of gritty characters . Today it's a pale depressing shadow of its former self...

Jerry Booth is a good character. Understated and funny.

I was barely 15 in 1973, and wasn't watching Corrie back then so I'm glad to have these episode here. I watch Corrie now and have been for about 20 years, I must say that Corrie was more easy going back then and less violent, I really enjoy these so different from what we see today on the show; thanks for posting.

Poor Elsie. She shows the helpless terror and fury of living with an alcoholic so perfectly...

I'm convinced Annie Walker read her lines off the ceiling, she always looked up whenever she spoke, lol.

This has been stated in the past that Doris famous “stare into the mid air” was due to her reading her lines off monitors. It is known she did occasionally conceal scripts behind props and even wrote her lines on Betty Drivers arm in one scene. But I like to believe that her staring off into the distance technique was Doris’s excellent portrayal of Annie’s demeanour of grandeur.

She was almost 74 yrs old when this was filmed, so it's possible that she availed herself of the occasional "crib note," but she based the character of Annie Walker on her social-climbing Aunt Bessie, and the "upward stare" (with raised eyebrows) was a mannerism that goes back to her earliest days (i.e., 1960) on Corrie St.

24:28 An interesting reminder that 1973-74 was the last year before all the smaller local authorities disappeared and were absorbed into much larger ones. Here in the Oldham area, districts like Crompton, Royton, Failsworth, Chadderton, Lees and Saddleworth had their own councils, but after that they all became part of Oldham. The same fate would have befallen Weatherfield Council - if it had existed, it would presumably have merged with Salford. All of this was the doing of Ted Heath's 1970-74 Tory government.

Is it my imagination, or did everything and everyone really get progressively more grimy and scruffy as the decade wore on? This episode looks kinda crisp when compared to the mid 1970s ones.

Alan Browning died of liver disease due to his drinking in the late 1970s in real life, he was only in his early 50s, it's weird that they have his character Alan Howard basically playing an alcoholic. Did they know his problems then or was it just purely a coincidence. It's bizarre that in real life he followed a similar path. Sad really as nice looking man, that deep gravelly voice, not an unattractive man for his age. Pat Phoenix never had a cigarette out of her mouth as Elsie Tanner and died way before her time in her early 60s with lung cancer. Art has basically bled into their real lives.
