  • Alfred Lincoln Streeter had a successful head-on locomotive collision for show at Buckeye Park, near Lancaster, Ohio, on May 30, 1896. The story had national press coverage, and launched Streeter into the business of crashing locomotives for show. Towns and cities from the East Coast to the Rocky Mountains wanted to host locomotive collisions. Streeter also gained a competitor, Joseph S. Connolly, from Des Moines, Iowa. Connolly would go on to become the biggest name associated with made to order locomotive collisions, staging 73 train wrecks between 1896 and 1932.

Facinating programme - I knew of the staged wreck craze, but didn't know it had been so extensively played out. (What a waste of good engines) Where does the infamous Katy 'crash at Crush' fit into this time frame? Are you going to cover the staged wrecks from silent movie days, when they set up and filmed a wreck with real trains, and then thought of a script around the incident?

Back then, people really didn't know anything about the physics of a train wreck, and would get way to close to the trains that were about to be destroyed! A lot of people were either hurt or even killed because of stupid stunts like this.
