I was stationed at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire on the day of the Vulcan's last operational flight in 1984. Not one, not two, but three of these beautiful old girls howled round all the bases in Lincs. They went right over our heads and I can't even begin to describe how loud they were, it was amazing. No-one could hear properly for days.

This was the only jet to damage my hearing... Farnborough 2014, I'll never forget it... This is how loud she was and now you can see why. This isn't even THAT close, I was about 150 yards from the runway with this sound going, all 65,000lbs thrust from those Olympus 202's, the sound reverberated off the starboard wingtip. The sound ricochet'd all around the buildings and you hear my ear pop, the chap next to me taking pictures asked me if I was alright and I was.. I just heard a beeping sound in my ear for the rest of the show.
I went to the doctors 2 days later because my ear was starting to leak gunk out of it. He checked my left ear and in the top right hand corner there was a 2mm rip in my eardrum, he asked me how I got it when he was doing the analysis of the injury and we got to the part where it said on the paper for medication.. ''What was the cause of the injury'' and I just said...
    Vulcan.

A truely iconic aircraft in the same league as the Spitfire and Concorde for popularity and British engineering.

As a Canadian myself you know back in the late 1980's if anyone made a bold claim to me that a Vulcan Bomber in the future would be restored to flying again in 2008 I would have laughed at them and called them mentally insane. Back in the 1980's I had all Vulcan Bombers forever grounded inside with moth balls around it after October 1986. Video sights and sounds do no justice to the energy experience of being right there in person feeling, hearing and seeing. It is impossible to describe the energy experience of seeing a Vulcan Bomber best take offs and flying displays back in the 1970's close up at Air Shows to anyone who has not been there just like it is impossible to describe the energy of what an Elvis Presley Concert or The Who with Keith Moon Concerts are like to anyone who has not been to one back then at that time.

But one thing that will haunt me forever in some beautiful way is you don't hear a vulcan approaching. You feel it roar. It made my rib cage rattle like no nightclub before it..im not surprised how it can set off car alarms. There will never be another plane as loud or powerful even the b52.. its like grieving to know its gone..
I can't explain the awe watching it climb at Bournemouth full afterburner watching them glow but from 5000ft up your ears rang and bones rattle..id hate to be the enemy of this..
You watched it come in but you never wanted to watch it leave.
I never found red arrows that amazing as they often flew past my boarding school in Banbury..
I really felt sad when Jon egging died the day after I went to watch

Roy Chadwick designed this aircraft right after ww2 yet it looks like something from the future! The man was an absolute genius!

I want a Vulcan for my own. It's the little bomber that could. Its howl reminds me of a flight of F-104s, and its aerobatic prowess is ... well, aerobatic. I love this symbol of what was a great British aviation industry back in the day. Avro forever!
