My pain management problem is due to the fact that my doctor and my therapist have completely opposite views on the role of pain during therapy. My therapist’s attitude is “no pain, no gain” so my sessions are extremely painful. My doctor says that no therapy should be done to the point of pain. Since at 6 weeks, he wants to begin weaning me off opioids, the dosage has been reduced to half. Since it has only been 3 days, I’m not sure what is going to happen at my next physical therapy session. I. Don’t think that anyone who has not experienced the kind of pain we have had to endure can be truly empathetic. The experience is not only physical but since it lasts for weeks, it has an affect on one’s psychological well-being.

My physiotherapist got me up less than 24 hours after knee replacement. Would not allow use of twisted sheet aid to get out of bed, no shoe horn to put on slip on shoe. Had had sleepless night and only one meal in 36 hours. I told him I was not going to be able to walk and try stairs but he insisted. I have never fainted before but passed out in the hall when he would not listen. Came to in bed and he insisted we try again after lunch. Again, would not listen and I passed out from effort out in the hall. Resulted in two night stay in hospital instead of planned one night. Extreme pain after second fall likely due to mishandling while unconscious and getting me back in bed. Sometimes patients really do know what they are up to.

When I had my knee replacement, I took morphine for about 6 to 8 weeks, ice as often as needed and acupuncture. Morphine was essential for pain relief for my physiotherapy which is the kee to regain health. Don’t wait to be in crisis to take your medecine. Also, I took Tylenol four times a day for few months. Ask your doctor.

@@maureenmckeon359 yes I did. Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to complete my physiotherapy successfully. There is no problem with morphine as long as it’s for a short period and for great pain. I had no problem to get off of it. I took more at the beginning and less and less …

I forget the opioids due to stomach discomfort, I use change of position - frequent, ice and a sleeping pill at night occasional Tylenol , but again this can cause some stomach upset. If I wake during the night , I walk around the house until pain and stiffness are relieved a bit .

I agree with you 100% I have chronic kidney stones I have a 14.5 mm kidney stone in my right kidney right now that I cannot pass I need to have surgically removed but last month the total number of stones that I did pass was 13 the biggest one was 6.5 mm now the thing is kidney stones are ridiculously painful I have gone through I think five surgeries just for my kidney stones and I have to go the emergency department when it gets too bad or I have a blockage and of course they always say oh he's back with another kidney stone and they know me by name you know and then you just get treated like garbage but at the same time I'm afraid to have my back surgery I have four ruptured discs in my lower back into herniated discs in my neck I am nervous to say the least and procrastinating they took all my pain meds away I have Tylenol with codeine that's where I was allowed to take after they took me off of 30 mg tablets of extended release oxycontin and I was allowed to take maximum daily dose was 120 mg of extended release so I would be taking 2 in the morning to at night it was a 12-hour tablet and then for the breakthrough pain I had 5 325 Percocet Percocet I was weaned off I was on there for 5 years how is weaned off by going from my regular dose the next month they took 10 tablets away next month they took 3/4 of my prescription away and then the next month I had 10 pills and that was it that was my taper and my extended release oxycontin there was no taper it was just discontinued that was pure hell

Wow! Five days? My husband was released the next day after surgery. He got oxy for pain which is absolutely horrible. Really messes with your mind, hideous constipation, serious insomnia and general goofiness. He’s into week three of recovery now and is doing much better. Has a centralized pain around the knee itself but is probably due to the repair of the never endings. Best of luck with your recovery, hope things improve you. Best wishes and take take.

They were going to send me home with just one pill every 4 hours. Finally got 2 every 4 hours. Am down to 2 every 6 hours, but should be every 5. I know one is not enough; need two. When they under treat pain it affects your recovery or healing. I've been walking regularly since I got out (shoulder surgery). It's not the pain meds making my stomach upset - it's the ****pain I'm still at a #6-#7 after pain meds during week 2. They underestimate the pain these operations cause. Having been in intractable unrelieved pain prior to surgery didn't help. It becomes ingrained. What they said at the end: pain management is key to good recovery. Don't be afraid to take your pain meds. Yeah, I'm not afraid to take them. They're too **** scared to prescribe.

After elbow replacement I was given 14 five milligram oxycodone tablets. What a joke! Had I really needed them (never took one because I am on high dose buprenorphine) That much would have lasted maybe two days and it hurt like heck for two weeks. Forget NSAID's because of my blood thinner Xaralto. This cookie cutter approach stinks. I told them what I was on yet at post op they insisted on giving me IV fentynal which had zero effect. Bupe super covers opiate receptor sites but they fluffed it off. Talk a good game.

I've had both knees done. One 7 years ago and the other 7 weeks ago. All I know is, the pain does get better and my first knee is pain free. It took upwards of 6 months to a year to really feel the best. Be patient and have faith. Good luck!

They tell you there's no guarantee the surgery will fix the pain problem, but give you no alternative - because they won't prescribe pain meds and OTC and Prescripton NSAIDS have too many side effects that can kill you, though they're supposed to be safer. Hogwash. They're not safer if they destroy your liver, heart, kidneys, and digestive tract. One woman died because she kept taking more and more Ibuprofen she was told was supposed to work, but didn't. People OD on those meds just as easily as opioids, if not more easily - it just takes longer and you don't know it's destroying your innards til it's too late.

      Hi
I had full knee replacement June 29th (6 months ago) And hip replacement February 19. Both in 2021. It is now January 16th 22. Still have quite a bit of pain especially in knee. My hip and legs seems like I hardly have any muscle strength at all. I was only in hospital 1 night for knee and 1 night with hip. I went to physical therapy for only 3 weeks. Which I’m sure had a lot to do with it. You should exercise every day. Maybe twice a day. Which I didn’t do.
