- Arthur Wilton Brown (born 24 June 1942)[1] is an English rock singer and songwriter best known for his flamboyant and theatrical performances, eclectic (and sometimes experimental) work and his powerful, wide-ranging operatic voice, in particular his high pitched banshee screams. The first time this song came on the radio in Knoxville, Tennessee with him yelling "I am the god of hellfire!" out of the silence, my poor mother almost ran the car off the road. I was about 13-14 years old, and "The Crazy World of Arthur Brown" is still one of my favorite albums of all time.

After releasing this song in 1968, Arthur toured the nation and set a record for 51 live performances in a week!
Wow! How do you even manage that many in a week!
That's like 7 - 9 daily
Saw him at the Action House, Long Beach, Long Island NY at the beginning of his tour. I think there were maybe a dozen people in the club, and all of them bikers. There were a few beers thrown after the first 2 songs. Arthur decided to call it an early night, to save his skin. But what I remember most of all was his incredible drummer - not even out of his teen years, Carl Palmer ripping up the skins!
What was he high on

Listening to this song in New Zealand
🙂
A massive influence on Alice Cooper.
Arthur was a class act whose debut album still remains a psychedelic
classic. His style of vocals also influenced many heavy-metal singers,
namely Ian Gillan. Great stuff.
YES FROM ALICE COOPER INFLUENCES...THANKS GUYS..
I totally got a Jack Black vibe from this guy. Wouldn't be surprised if Jables was also influenced by him.
Bruce Dickinson and King Diamond also...
Although I didn't know he was an influence to both Alice Cooper and Ian Gillian it does not surprise me to learn that.
@1400deadwood From all accounts, Arthur seems
to be a very friendly and down to earth chap.
His later music with Kingdom Come is also worth
checking out.

I saw them live in 1968. One of the best live performances I have ever seen. I'll never forget the moment Arthur appeared from the back of the stage, wearing a long flowing multi-coloured robe and the fire helmet. Mesmerising.
And he asked to light his fire.
My cousin showed me this in 1968 and told me that one time he left the flaming helmet on too long and burned his hair off
The fire helmet alone, Jimi Hendrix would’ve been going “hmmm, that’s what I’m missing”
Nope… he said he’d take him to burn and learn… and every time, even when Arthur Brown goes grocery shopping or to a restaurant… he lets the cashier or the waiters and waitresses know that he’s going to take them to burn and to learn. And as he does, that organ always plays in between sentences and phrases
