There were still standards and codes in hip hop, and the streets, not these corporations, still had some say-so in whether an emcee was legitimate or not. I'm not even a hip hop head, but I write songs word for word. Multiple genres. Growing up, we were sold the idea that rappers were unique from other people in the music growing up, we were sold the idea that rappers were unique from other performers in the music industry, because they are supposed to write most if not all of their lyrics. I think we understood that other people might write a hook or something for a rapper. But one of the selling points of rap and hip hop was that they were supposed to be the ones who wrote what they were recording lyric for lyric.

We can't deny his success. No one in this genre has had a top spot for this long. That being said he's absolutely not an Emcee. You have to write your own stuff. Hes like Anakin in Episode 3. He gets a seat at the council but he is not granted the rank of master.

Meek said all that because he didn’t post his album. The 2hr interview Drake did says Meek wasn’t in a good headspace when he said that, so he ran with that.
He came out the gate with poppy hit records, that was always his lane.
