In 2008 I chose this head (in white) rather than going on senior trip to Disney. Best choice I could have made.
I find the OG clearer on blue ,as far as I remember though it does feel better with greenbacks rather than v30
It was 2014. I was a college senior taking a trip to Singapore, and It was my first time seeing rows and rows of the OG EVH 5150III being sold in a music store. To this day I remember it being the best tone I've ever heard in a room: massive, tight, growling, sizzling, and LOUD. That kickstarted my love of everything 5150. Right now I have an old 6L6 50w head and an Iconic combo. The EVH and 5150 sound is special to me.
I've got a 2013 5150iii 6l6 100watt. And a newer 5150iii 50watt 6l6. Even though the 100watt doesn't have a resonance, it still sounds much better for me
i had the very first version, i think there are 3 different versions out there, it was lower gain but it had the most perfect brown sound i have ever heard in any amp at all, i think it was the crunch channel.
This channel helped me decide on purchasing the 50w stealth version.
You always have the best reviews. Very in depth. Love your vids! 😎🤘
Killer demo per usual. I have this amp being delivered today so the timing to post this is perfect! I love my 50w Stealth and always wanted the “original” 6L6 100w. You mentioned dropping a 5751 in one of the preamp stage to chill out that overly compressed vibe which I’ve been curious to doing as well. Can you recall which valve position that was and would it be the same position for the Stealth as well? Thanks Kyle!!
Love the stack of heads behind you super freaking cool
I got my 5150iii about a year ago and I run Burch cabs with V30S and it's by far the best amp set up I've ever played
Can't really do the blue channel because I like my tone to be saturated to hell and back . Totally agree about not having a residence circuit I'm speaking with a amp technician to have one added if possible, but other than that I couldn't see myself playing through anything else besides my 6505 of course but the 5150iii get a 5 Star rating from me
I used to have one of the preproduction Stealth models. Hand numbered serial number 3 and the Frankenstein red/black/white grill. I traded my Boss ES-8 and Pedaltrain straight across for it from a guy who works for Fender.
Kyle… love ur vids !!
What are you’re top 5 amps that you have either owned or played through ??
I didn't like the first evh 5150 that much but fell in love with the stealth
The stealth Is absolute perfection
The Stealth is the best. 50-watt is great, 100-watt is even better.
@@TYLERtheMAGGOT1 the stealth is absolutely not close to perfection. They totally botched the clean channel, like bad lol
@@blgdinger3 I disagree very strongly. It sounds perfect to me. I get amazing cleans especially when I use my walrus audio pedals and other reverb effects. Only amp that I tried that has better cleans are the mesa rectifiers and other mesa models, but those amps are amazing as well but much more expensive. My stealth is perfect to my liking
Killer tone all day! Great demo
I loved mine other than the whole top of the box flexing when you picked it up by the handle 😂
Cool shirt. We opened up for them and Obituary Dec 2019
The Red and Boss DS-1 is freakin Amazing!!🤘🏽🤘🏽🤘🏽
Hey man, what’s the second pedal you kicked on when playing through the red channel, I didn’t catch the name but it sounds mean. Thanks for all the cool amp reviews!
love these vids
Thank you Kyle for another cool review! This amp is a true warhead! I own a one for about 10 years already and never had any issues with it. I mostly play on clean and lead channels. The only modification I made to it is a 'resonance mod'. I did it exactly the way it's done in its next Stealth edition and the amp really slays! Over all, this amp has a bone-crushing tone and house-shaking power! I love it.
Hey Kyle, first let me say thanks for all your Iconic videos, I have only had it for a few days and it has already made its way on 3 songs at my studio. Do you still plan on doing a dedicated video for the JSX, or one comparing the JSX to the Triple XXX? I'd also love to see how the Triple XXX MkI, MkII, and 3120 all compare, if that is a possibility in the future. Thanks!
I'd second the Triple XXX Mk1 and Mk2 shootout with the 3120!
It blew me away 🤘
i need to look at those guitars u play man been wanting explorer style guitar, but i still searching !!
You got the best channel for good guitar tones! Have you tried Bluguitars Amp1 Iridium edition? Would be nice to see it featured on your channel.
Not yet, but people ask me all the time. Would love to try it out for sure!
You should try the other overdrives on the blue channel. I don't particularly like it either, but if you tweak a drive pedal enough you can get rid of that stupid boxy sound and make it sound more like a mesa. I did this through an OD808. I don't even use an OD pedal in front of my 5150iii anymore cuz, frankly, it just sounds better without one overall lol. Otherwise, like you're saying, there's just too much high end nonsense. Reducing presence typically helped, though I've been running slightly lower highs (still above 5) while bumping up the presence until I found a sweet spot.
edit: oh, EMG's with an overdrive on this amp = good luck
Why doesn’t this channel have more subs? Tell your friends people ✊✊
Have you played this amp through the evh cab/speakers? Are they that much different than the V30's? Great amp too
It’s funny I was looking online for videos about this head tryna hear tones and opinions, most were jst sales hype stuff, then I bought the head, then fluff came out with one, now you. Where were you guys a few weeks ago? 😂😂 haah
It's a totally different ball game with the matching cabinet.
Thanks for doing this. It's hard to find videos on the OG.
My pleasure
I don't really agree that that amp started the hype the hype was always there since the original. Its just the amp that was the current one when the hype ramped right up. The original 2 peavey ones are still more sought after and the 5150 ii / 6505+ is still the best version made to date but great video
totally agree, love my 6505 +
For me the stealth
The main problem that i found in this particulary amp, wich i have... is, the 100w is expensive than the 50w, and does not have Midi... but the 50w have. So, if you want to change channels with any combination of pedal presets... you are going to need an Amp midi controller like a gizmo from RJM.
Beside that , i dont find any problem with the sound, is very versatile amp, and take very well any pedal, but in the front on the amp, i dont recommend a overdrive, but i do recommend a Mxr Line Driver, thats turns this amp in a diffrent beast ! and the loop is pretty clean , does not lose any signal.
I use that same MXR Line Driver as well, it’s my favorite boost!
Kyle can you please shootout this regular 6l6 with the stealth and el34 you have? PRETTY PLEASE!!!
Sounds amazing, like you expect the 5150 to. Still want the 50w Stealth, though. 100w Stealth if I can swing it financially.
If you check thomman I've seen they're selling 100W stealth heads cheap. That's before taxes and shipping
Yeah, I have a 50 watt 6l6 and want a 50 watt stealth with a 412. Don't need anything more since I don't gig.
@@Ryan-kc5pl For the 412 cab, look into the HESU Demon 4x12 cab from thomman, it sounds sick and is about the same size as a Mesa OS 412.
I got a 50 watt 6L6 Stealth this year and it changed my life. I play my guitar more often now because it sounds so damn good. Nothing I have ever played compares to that amp.
@@craigharrison5406 it's so inspiring and that's what makes it so great
Towards the end (emg) the riffs was so heavy that it sounded slam dm bands
Great amp. Little picky on cabs
Low:8
Mid:just above 2
High:just below 6
Presence:8
Resonance:6
Gain:3
Use a clean boost
Killer tone
killer kemper profiles btw
Thank you my friend, really appreciate it!
One of my best intros Kyle :)
Kyle do you know about the blue and red channel gain trick on these amps? Idk if it works on the regular 6l6 in this video but I know 100% for sure it works on the stealth and el34
turn the gain of the blue channel all the way down. Now switch the the red channel. Stay on the red channel for the rest of this. Pull the red gain pretty low. Start chugging. Notice the saturation and gain structure. While chugging reach over the the blue channel gain knob and start rolling it up. Notice the saturation and gain structure of the red channel change entirely while you move the blue channel gain knob.
The higher your blue channel gain is, the higher your red channel gain will be. The lower your blue channel gain is, the lower gain your red channel will be.
Do with this information what you want. For me, with a basic overdrive it kinda gives me 6 different gain structures to play with. 3 with overdrive and 3 without overdrive. And all of them do different things. Now with a midi switcher I can control my amp and my pedals together. I basically made my amp and pedalboard operate like modeler. Not sound like a modeler just function like one. It feels kinda savvy lol.
I believe this only works on the Stealth models
@@belligerentamateur correct
Kyle If you had to pick only one, which would you pick this amp or the iconic???
The Iconic doesn’t deserve all the shit it’s caught, but I don’t think there’s many people that would place it over the full tube 5150 variants.
Still a great amp overall though!
Kyle I thought you preferred the blue channel? Lol. Is that channel better on the el34 or something?
Beastly
Try this amp thru greenbacks, thats what it was designed around, not a Mesa V30 cab 😫
These heads had a fixed resonance You can do a resonance mod to them ...
You may have answered this before, but what’s your favorite 5153 amp and why?
I had a 100 watt EVH 5150III,then I got the 50 watt version….I vastly prefer the 50 watt 6L6 to the 100 watt…..The 50 just has a bark and a tightness that the 100 watt standard version doesn’t….
Blue channel of 50W has significant schematic difference to 100W counterpart, at least more gain. Also has depth control and more responsive presence control due to antilogarithmic (C-type) taper.
@@LucifdeLuther there's only 2 differences in the blue channel preamp between the 50w and 100w. There's a 150k resistor across the blue channel gain control which the 50w doesn't have, then there's a 180k resistor inline to that same potentiometer on the 100w head that's reduced to a 100k on the 50w. That's it. These 2 small differences are what make the 50w have more gain, that's the only thing those differences make. The rest of the blue channel preamp circuit is identical between the two. Takes about 5 minutes to perform the mods on the 100w to make it have the same blue channel preamp as the 50w, it's pretty common for 100w owners to do it
The red channel has tons of gain. I still prefer my 6505.
No resonance (and presence) control on your amp? Get an Amptweaker Depthfinder!
I never even knew this existed!! Hmm might have to look into this head now instead of spending more on the el34 100w!
Who's that riff at "7:42" marker
I noticed you also reviewed the SLO 100. Is it really worth twice as much as this amp in your opinion? I get thats a subjective question btw.
For me, no. The SLO is amazing, but I'd still take the 5150 at any price because I prefer it's tone. Build quality is a different story.
I had one of these... it was truly my first great amp... I didn't realize how great it was until I got rid of it lol
Does it matter which spot you stick the 5751 tube at?
Yes
Is the 50 watt higher gain? Cause I swear my blue channel has more gain on my 50 watt combo
Yeah it's higher gain. For whatever reason the 100w head has a resistor over the blue channel gain control, which significantly reduces the gain output. Pretty simple to remove it, a lot of people do, makes it have the same preamp as the 50w once it's done
The answer to why EVH went to Bender? Money ;)
What's a bender?
@@belligerentamateur Fender, but I said Bender because I read some supposed bad rap about that company. For example when they bought out Jackson and people won't buy a (Fender) Jackson it might be the same with how Jipson bought Mesa. Always love your vids and might get me a custom Balaguer one day!!! Since I love the ones you are jammin' on! Rock on sir! \m/
Probably money and the fact they have a better place than China to build them
I have that amp the Blue channel sucks! Go to the red channel!!!!! I've played plenty of shows with that amp and I only use the green and the red channels!!!
Hey kyle, just some unsolicited advice. I think you should give your opinion of an amp after you demo it the way fluff does. Giving your opinion before playing anything (other than the intro), especially sharing a negative opinion, doesn't make me want to watch the rest of the video lol
What can you say about the 5150 amp series from Peavey and EVH/Fender that hasn't been said by literally thousands of studio and live recordings featuring these amps.
@@OnionMilk420, it is interesting that you take my positive statement about a series of guitar amps and turn it into a supposed demeaning or derogatory statement about a person. That says more about your perspective than anything.
@@BazonBlades Admittedly I read it negatively at first too, but now that you say it, it does read as more "they've really proven themselves".
If it makes you feel better, I got your meaning immediately. Lol
@@BazonBlades aw man, I'm sorry, I just thought you were dogging on the video a bit.
No hard feelings dude
Sometimes you just really can't tell lol
Had one on loan over christmas. I never managed to dial a satisfying tone out if it, the cleans are awful, the presence knob taper is weird, the lead channel mid pot is weird, you have to turn it on on the back like a peasant, and the footswitch circuit failed. I was happy it was not mine. My friend sold it and got a 6505 instead, and that amp is just a pure metal workhorse. Not my personal favourite but I have high respect for it. I tried the EVH 50W 6L6 and it was also not that impressive.
No resonance? Weird I have the 50W and it has resonance!
That's because it's a different amp. Haha
@@belligerentamateur now i don’t feel inferior having the 50
@@brettbaker71 same here exactly
it sounds like a Line 6. The Peavey version was much better. My Friedman makes this thing sound like a toy. That is why Jake E. Lee dumped EVH for Friedman.
K
You sounded very "presidential" while inexplicably slurring your speech.
An ok demo. Playing modern riffs doesn't do this demo any justice. It seems like you're expecting this amp to be good for death or modern metal. This amp was designed for Eddie Van Halen and shredders alike. Kinda stupid that you have to resort to pedals to do this amp justice. It's not necessary. There are many great options on this amp without pedals. Also, Mesa cabs produce a very muddy sound. Marshalls are a better option.
everything you said was opinion and not fact other than the amp was made for Eddie van Halen. The 5150 has become the most popular amp for all forms of extreme metal in the last 30 years. I think you're coming at this from a standpoint of what you think it was supposed to be vs what it has become in reality.
