6:51 that’s exactly it, she had to “kill” the old versions of herself in order to take control of her narrative again. The graveyard scene in the beginning was very much about that concept. It was a shock and awe moment that had he exact effect she was looking for. She’s super cheeky too because every album has references to snakes, from the imagery, to the lyrics, she absolutely embraces it lol 😂❤️
Thankfully, she squashed all the haters and has been able to embrace all of herself again, from sweet to edgy to funny to powerful to the absolute best of all things good and beautiful again. 🥰❤️🥰
The words "this doesn't sound like a Taylor Swift song" are amusing because she covers to many genres and styles that you could say that about any one of her songs, depending on which albums you've heard up to that point. This was from her Reputation era. The snakes are a both Kim/Kanye. As Kim is the one who called her a snake which caused the whole Internet social media to turn their backs on Taylor’s phone in 2015/16 there’s a whole video about Kanye West recording and Kim having everything to do with editing the whole conversation. The truth finally came out as the whole video was released. In her new album there is a song called Cassandra, which addresses this whole situation. I hope you can get to eventually🥰 great reaction

A friend of mine was always snapping pictures of everyone when we'd hang out. I don't like having my picture taken so I asked him why he did it. He said "Elisa, we are young and we are beautiful! These are the days we want to remember!" and he was right. It'll always bother me how people judged Taylor for living her best life as much as she could. Good on her for making a billion for her talents and savvy.
It is on the Reputation album. It has to do with the industry and especially Kim and Kanye incidents. We need to have a real Swiftie to detail out a lot of what this video means. The Snakes has to do with Kim calling her a snake.
Welcome, Andie! This is my first time seeing you on HPR, and you're a good addition; I enjoyed the extra conversation. Yes, she had fun making this video and again didn't spare any expense in realizing her vision for this video. Taylor is a worthy successor to Michael Jackson when he was at his peak with music videos.
This "Look What You Made Me Do" music video contains lots of easter eggs for swifties; Scott touched on some and was pretty spot-on on the history.
This "Reputation" album and "Look What You Made Me Do" music video is a response to her being set up and wrongfully accused by Kanye and Kim of lying through (an illegal and) a doctored recording they made of their telephone conversation with Taylor. Kanye and Kim and their fans were hating on Taylor all over social media. Taylor couldn't prove Taylor wasn't lying and all the hate was too much for a girl raised to seek the approval of others, so Taylor disappeared herself in England for 1 year. A year in which she hardly trusted anyone and a lot of people didn't trust her, and almost nobody saw her. There, she switched to creating her "Reputation" album, which was another metamorphosis of her music. Years later, the full recording leaked out and finally proved that Taylor was the one telling the truth.
A snake correction: I wouldn't say Taylor likes snakes. The first time I saw Taylor have snakes was in this video, in response to the aforementioned Kanye and Kim incident, in which Kim disrespectfully called her a snake, which was then repeated by so many haters on social media. The existence of the snake emoji didn't help. Scott mentioned how she often takes disrespect towards her and morphs it, the snake is a great example of it, as is the tabloid image that she turned into her masterpiece song and music video "Blank Space", in which she poetically summarized her tabloid image as "I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream", which may still be her personal all-time favorite line. For Taylor's Reputation Stadium Tour, she also had a massive snake towering above the stage. The final time I saw Taylor have snakes is in her "Me!" music video, which Scott, Sam, and I all love. It's the first single from her "Lover" album. In that "Me!" music video, a pastel snake transforms into a swarm of butterflies, which is an easter egg that symbolizes her transformation between "Reputation" (then her previous album) and "Lover" (then her current album). Butterflies are the spirit animal for her "Lover" album. In reality, what Taylor really likes is cats 🐈.
The various Taylors were her in costume from points throughout her previous album eras. And she gives them their tabloid personalities.
Taylor has said that to stay relevant, she feels that her music must go through metamorphoses from album to album. I think it's a bit risky for most artists to stray as far as she has, but I think Taylor is such and incredible songwriter and entertainer that I'm really enjoying it. She's been my favorite music artist for 10+ years now.
One thing I find so great about Taylor's discography is that her experiments within each new era constantly broadens her audience pool. This is the video that made me sit up and pay attention to Taylor Swift. She took all those toxic jokes and snide comments and put them into her first video back after her hiatus, and basically told everyone to f*ck off. I was sold from that day forward and have been a Swiftie ever since.
She is awesome and amazing and a MARKETING GENIUS. AND! Im totally jere for it. =)
She didn’t start directing her videos until 2019 when Lover came out. She first co-directed the music videos and “The Man” was her first solo-directed video. From 2019-Present, she’s directed all of her videos except for “I Bet You Think About Me” from “Red (Taylor’s Version)” that was released in 2021.
Even though she didn’t direct her videos prior to 2019, she was the one who came up with all the treatment plans… so she’s always been involved with how the music videos turned out in the end.

Fun fact: This is the only song where she openly used a sample in the song to be petty. The bass line is from Right Said Fred’s I’m Too Sexy.
She always produced and written her music videos and went as a co-Director for a couple of them before she directed them herself. Taylor has always been directly involved with every single process of making her videos. Doing storyboards to editing being with the director to watch footage back. She has very good knowledge of how to do pretty much everything. I’m super excited to see what her feature length film will be. All her directed MV are Top Tier and we know how phenomenal of a writer she is. so I think she’ll nail it.
This was the first single from the Reputation album where she came out of her self-imposed exile and hit everyone over the head with a new sound. Like you said she took all of the negative talk about her and twisted it into something biting and sometimes funny. This video is full of references to her conflict with Kanye, Kim K, Katy Perry, the music streaming services, her record label, etc. She stands on top of the “Taylor mountain” of her past selves in front of T that looks suspiciously like a cross and tells us that if she’s going to be crucified for everything she does then she’s going to kill off her nice image. It’s hard to describe how shocking it was at the time for the fans!

Lots of great metaphors here that you need to be in on the lore to catch…like when she’s robbing the vault, there’s a digital crawl sign that says it’s a streaming service, and that’s a reference to when she pulled her catalog from Spotify to protest how little artists are paid per stream. The motorcycle sequence, when she lifts the motorcycles…she’s carrying Big Machine records. In the bridge, where she’s standing on the mountain of old Taylors, it’s a crucifixion reference. She’s being crucified in the public sphere, her reputation is rising above all the dying personas and resurrecting afresh. Many, many, many metaphors in this one!

It was hillarious when Taylor had an interview , when she told Joseph Kahn all her creative ideas on this video. It was great because Joseph Kahn didnt blink an eye in what she had wildly invisioned. When she was saying it out loud it sounded Crazily Impossible., and it still turned out Amazing as always.

This video was premiered at the MTV music awards. In a way her music is her perspective on pop culture in a time capsule. She is a major consumer of pop culture- music, books, film, TV. I could see that she paid homage to many popular programs & many MTV female videos preceding her. The director worked with others like Britney Spears.
From the start she wrote & performed her own music - some describe as diaristic. She left a major label (RCA Nashville) because they wanted her to perform others music & shelve her until 18. The indie label gave her more creative control- but they had to think out of the box because they didn't have the power or clout of more established labels.
Taylor has directed every music video from “the man” (which is on the Lover album) to present day. You are watching a video from reputation, which is the last album she put out before owning her masters, or having the control to decide to make her own videos.
Shes made over 60 music videos, maybe close to 70 by now. Plus a short film shot on film.
I read in other comments, that this was the most expansive video ever. (Not sure if that was true then or might still be true, but quite possible). Director was Joseph Khan, who did many videos with her during 1989 and Reputation. 😎

This album was her comeback from all the negative experiences she went through with the media, Kanye, and Kim K. This song is her straight up eff you to all the haters that tried to cancel her and make it sound like she was a “lying” “snake”. She completely shed her sweet country/pop persona for this.
It’s super dark and edgy at times but, for a lot of Swifties, this album is her best one. She went from obscurity and not being seen in public for a year to this fantastic album!! The dollar bill in the bathtub is about her SA case with that DJ that stuck his hand up her skirt and grabbed her butt when she was posing for a photo. She won the case, and only asked for $1 on the principal.
