  • In this video I share some tips on how to choose the right trail running shoe for you including different terminologies and some examples of different styles of running shoe.
I also share with you what I am wearing right now on the trails, well not right now obviously I am stuck in my office doing this but you get what I mean.
Here is a list of the shoes featured, there are no affiliate links as I don’t see the need but would much rather you pay me with some feedback in the comments and even sharing it if you find useful.
Any questions in the comments as always I will do my best to get back to you.

I have the VJ ultras and love them! Especially impressed with the grip. No issues with the heel cup or tongue. I ran a 50 miler in the snow and mud in them without any problems and I seemed to have much better grip than other runners. But more recently 70 miles into a 90 miler I had to swap out of them (into my inov8 G270’s) as I found them too narrow in the front and my little toes started to suffer from being squashed. Guess my feet had swollen a lot. But for more normal distances they are just wonderful.

In Greece, i see many shoes having that ''trail running'' name even tho they`re just hiking shoes. It took me some money to find the perfect shoe xD

That's a super helpful video. Hopefully it'll help me get the right trail shoes from now on!

Thank you for the video. I bought the Trailfly G 270 V2's - partly based on your review - and I love them. But my feet are more flipper than feet. My feet are pretty wide, even across the mid-sole. I can wear the Trailflys, if I wear Darn Tough no-show ultra lightweight socks, just. If anyone has any recommendations, I would be grateful. Thanks again for the video.

I think the VJ Ultra 2 shoe plate is just a normal plastic rock plate, not a carbon plate.

Just ordered some VJ ultra 2 for the Arc next year. Ran 65 in it last year in my Scott Suoertrac RC2 but I found they were not grippy on the wet rock and the lack of rock plate meant the soles of my feet felt battered more than having achy legs. Like I had walked on hot coals, they were also not good for the long road section around Penzance. Hoping the VJ ultra will be a bit better all round 🤞🏼

Great reviews Gary! Interesting I have the exact same problem with the VJs. I have the VJ ultra V1 which have done about 500+ miles now and it took a good 200 miles or more before the tongue was worn in enough to stop shredding my foot/ankle! I'm still unsure what to wear for the LL100. I've been doing all my training in the inov8 280s which I love, but the grip is rubbish on wet ground where as the VJs are like "no more nails" on the wet rocks!! Tempted to get a pair of VJ v2 and try and wear them in over the next 7 weeks, but don't want to risk ruining my feet! Just one more thing to add to the stress list!!

Shouldn’t need to wear a shoe in …. Stick with what you know now

  • @expatadventureturkey9324

Great discussion points, as we become more older and experienced in running I’ve noticed for me at least that I prefer a different type of midsole. And finding that balance of cushion to dampen the impact without being scared of rolling my ankle is my sweet spot. Ground feel is something, I’m moving away from I believe, and enjoy the Hoka/Craft/Sacouny experience. What are your thoughts on drop vs minimal drop? I ask due to calf strain over months of training with plenty of vert… seems that maybe 8mm or 9mm give your relief from calf strain when doing training in mountains. Thanks in advance have a week and even better weekend.

Yeah it’s definitely good to have a mix of drop / cushioning I think … 15 years ago I raced anything from 10km to 160km in 4mm drop - minimal cushioning but like you say I couldn’t do that now. Calf injuries are more prevalent once you hit 38 so training smart and strength work for lower limb more essential than a few mm in drop though 👌🏼💪🏻

If it was myself I would be using the VJ sport ultra (taped up😂) or maybe a La Sportiva Cyclon or similar … some cushion with protection is what you need then good grip if wet

Anyone out there have a deep foot so you have to remove the insole, or could recomend a shoe with rock plate also.

what's the fit and Cush like on the VJ ultras compared to the G270s? I find the 270 v2s a bit hard for longer runs now the grounds hard but the fit is really great. would the VJs be a good buy from longer runs and ultras and did you get the same size in both shoes?

    • @GaryHouseCoaching
      @GaryHouseCoaching  Před rokem +1

Yes very similar fit and more cushioning but responsive with it - it’s a great shoe apart from the rubbing issue on tongue and heel cup

I had exactly the same ankle bone issue with the V1 of the VJ Ultras. They'd been fine in training up to 45km then I wore them in UTS 165 last year which was cancelled when I was at 55k so I did the 50k the next day and at 40k in the ankle started to hurt . That took a few weeks to resolve. I got round it after using sticky back neoprene cushioning with a v section cut out to lift the edge of the shoe away from the ankle. They are a truly great shoe on the Snowdonia rock in both wet and dry. Well done on another great shoe video. You did my favourite ever shoe video "when should I replace my shoes?", "When they're f***ed" 😀👍

Ha yeah I probably need to remake that one it looks so dated now 😂😂👌🏼 yeah I had the original version and it did happen but only after very long days … anything over 2 hours for me in these and my foot is cut up and ankle bone sore without taping first - annoying line you say , brilliant show in the mountains

@@GaryHouseCoaching I changed my lacing from heel lock which I think made it better although I've not done a big long run in them for a while. I did UTS100M in Topo MNT Racers 2s and they were brilliant (although the bog destroyed them and they've been warranty returned no quibble)

@@GaryHouseCoaching thanks I was asking if they had the SG (soft ground) or FG (firm ground) tread. How does the grip perform on muddy conditions? I was thinking of using them just for hiking shorter distances but not for running
