Katarmal Sun temple :
Katarmal Sun Temple, set in the lap of the mighty Himalayas, is a well-kept secret of Almora in Uttarakhand. The temple is dedicated to the Sun God and is a splendid amalgam of stone carvings and religious belief.
The quaint village of Katarmal is only 16 km away from the popular hill station of Almora.
HistoryThe Katarmal Sun Temple is more than eight centuries old, which makes it one of the oldest sun temples in India. The temple was built by Katyuri kings, who were known for their love for art, and architecture.
The temple's layout and architecture are designed with specific astronomical calculations and its east-west alignment allows the sun's rays to brighten the sanctum during specific times of the year. It is built in a way that sun rays hit the main idol inside the sanctorum on certain days of the year. This temple was built by Katarmalla and is dedicated to the avatar of the Sun God,
Another prominent feature of the temple is that it is surrounded by 44 smaller temples, which were built during different time periods.
This beautiful hilltop temple also offers some breathtaking views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. The best part is its remote location that has helped preserve its historical, architectural and natural beauty over the years.
