In this video, I delve into the world of star notes for bills and the shocking news that suggests their impending demise. Join me as I discuss an article by Arthur Friedberg that uncovered a significant change in US paper currency production, potentially spelling the end of star notes as we know them.
I'll also showcase a portion of my star note collection, pulled from circulation, and provide tips on how to determine if the star note in your wallet or purse is rare. Additionally, I'll reveal how upcoming changes in currency production may affect the way you search for fancy serial numbers on bills.

I have heard the first time 3 months ago that the BEP is moving away from "error/star notes." But taking out sequential numbered notes is new to me. Since, I've been made aware of this, I have been purchasing sequential/star notes in BEP sealed packs. Honestly, the BEP is taking the fun out of collecting error notes. Please, keep viewers apprised of any news. Thanks...
I've been collecting them for a long time. I have new and old notes crisp and uncirculated. 1, 5, 10, 20, 50s and 100s. Have 10 consecutive $20 bills that came out a a fresh bank strap 17 years ago. I'm always on the hunt for them.
Sweet! Save some for the rest of us! LOL. Thanks for watching!
You forgot the 2 dollar bill. I have a whole stack of them all also
I started collecting bills, haphazardly, several years ago. I usually get them from banks but sometimes I will buy them if the price is right. I have a bill wallet that holds star notes, silver certificates (blue), US NOTES ( usually in $2s) and several others that are collectible for one reason or another. I was take my collections to my coin clubs and give presentations with them. This got me a little bit of notoriety and people would bring their notes in for me to appraise and maybe even give them a value for them. More often than not they would bring in bills for me to buy and on occasion put them on an auction table, which I would eventually wind up buying.
I could go on but I have so many different types and certifications that I could go on for hours but I’ll end it here and if anyone has any questions just write me a comment and I’ll try to get back to you.
Wow. That's awesome! Clubs are such a great resource. It sounds like you have an impressive collection. Thanks for watching!
Finding a buyer is the part all You CZcamsrs conveniently overlook ... "There is a sucker born every minute" ... has ran it's course.
Not by a long shot
Very nice video! I really enjoyed it! Subscribed and looking forward to more videos!
Awesome, thank you!
Very well put together video. I'm a little over a year from being 70. Just like the comment below, I look at all of my coins and notes after going through the cashier. My wife knows that "I don't have any pocket change" so they will give me back at 80 cents in coins. I have coins in jars, on my desk, on the floor (remember, I'm older, the floor is a mile away). I got a star dollar note a few months ago and a 1943 Nickel. So, I look. Most likely I shall find something and only have a few years to buy that corvette. Anyhow, I enjoyed the video. Good luck.
LOL...Keep all that spare change! That's nice that you found a couple of interesting pieces. Good luck saving up for the corvette! That's for watching; I appreciate it!
Thank you for your information. I appreciate that I’m new to the currency collecting coins and paper so that sucks to hear but I’m glad I did. Thank you.
Welcome to the hobby! I'm sure you'll enjoy it! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I have collected and saved a little over 2 hundred star notes and 5 2013 b notes. I realy enjoy searching coins and dollars
Great collection of star notes. Since I have been looking I haven't come across one yet. Eventually. Great video.👍
Thank you! It took a few years to get them. Keep your eyes out...they'll turn up eventually.
I have several. Here’s a fun way to start looking, go to the bank and buy a stack of 1s. I think it’s 50-100$ now it might be obnoxious to have to get rid of then normal ones after but many dollar stores and gas stations often have “need 5s n 1s please” signs so u can easily take those 1s to them to turn them back into 20s once you take out any old bills or star bills. I personally keep any bill pre 1990. One day they will be sought after by collectors. I anticipate once they get rid of the dollar altogether for a time people will pay a lot for these old bills for nostalgia.
That's a great way to hunt! I like that idea of turning the unwanted ones into stores that need smaller bills! Thanks for watching!
This guy does Not explain the "star" reason well. it is just an interruption in the numbers during printing and has No added value. Actually Useless.
@@chipsramek3868 the star has a use, it shows that that bill had been damaged taken out of circulation and a copy printed and put into circulation in its place, a simple google search would tel you that.
Just subscribed and good to know, thank you
Appreciate you watching...& thanks for the sub!
Thanks for the info...love my star notes...wish they wouldnt go away
I know right...Thanks for watching!
I have about 20 star notes, I've been collecting for a while.
Nice!

Awesome thank you!
Good video!
Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching!
Thank you
You're welcome👍. Thanks for watching!
Yes. Its true. I picked up a few straps of the new BEP non star note non sequential packs a few weeks ago. The wording on ribbon is different and also a new web site. So it may very well be the death of the star note.
good job
Thank you!
Great information! Thanks for sharing! Keep doing this!
Thanks so much! Appreciate you watching!
This rumor has been out for a while now. You can find the reference to the non-sequential serial number machines in the BEP 2023 capital investment report. Somewhere, I can't find it now, the BEP had said that star notes aren't going anywhere soon. I guess we can take that with a grain of salt, they are the government. It will take time to get the new machine's, install them and then work the bugs out. Right now, this is all speculation, albeit probably true. I'd imagine people will start hanging on to them though. I personally only keep the 'sheet' ones and not the 'regular' ones.
Yes, I agree. It will take a some time to get everything up and running. Thanks for watching!
The “sheet” ones?
@@xd-metal9026 There are two types of star notes, Sheet & Regular. If it's a regular note that means the whole stack of 100 bills was replaced. If it's a sheet note, then just the one sheet was replaced. You have to look them up to determine which one it is. There is a couple star note lookup sites where you can do this. The sheet notes are usually low print runs and more collectable.
There are two types of star notes, Sheet & Regular. Rugular notes are when the whole stack of 100 bills is replaced, and Sheet notes are when they replace just a sheet. thanks for sharing, Sub
Of course they will be going away with introduction of cbdc which they are hell bent on getting it going

Whoa!
Subbed you friend
Thank you!
Unless the note has at least 3 0s at the beginning of the serial number, it won't be rare
Not true, production runs often start at much higher number. It’s important to check the production numbers.
I have a lot of star note
From $1 to $100
How can I sell it ?
Thanks
You'll have to do your research to see if they're worth selling. You can bring them to a coin shop or try your luck on eBay.
Goto "tha 'Bay . . look for $2 star with an orange background . . . or . .you can go to your LCS . . Local Coin Store - see what they will they will pay - their offer will be low because they have to sell it & make a profit
Ebay
im gonna hit up my bank. thanks for the info man. I appreciate it
No problem 👍. Appreciate you watching.
I have a stern note that is also a birthday note
Oh that's a double whammy! Thanks for watching!
I have only a few I kept. One is a radar note.
What’s a radar note? I’m new at this 😊
Cool! Thanks for watching!
@@notsurewhatscookin8691 A radar note would be like 12344321
@@johnlazlo1908 it doesn’t even have to be a radar note but it does help the value. Just put it out there and have a minimum on what you would take for it. Then if no one hits the minimum list it again but starting at the mid - highest bid you got before and see where that’ll take you.
The RADAR is keeper for sure . . Nice snag
I have a $2 Red Star note 1953 I have not been able to find any
Hope you find the info you’re looking for.

Oh shit
For real.
Starnotes are not ending
Differentiate. Can you say cinnamon.?👍😆
I was shocked that tripped me up. LOL
My word. Irreconcilable🤢
thank you
but i highly doubt the BPE is going to stop making mistakes. brainpower is on the decline.
i expect more mistakes and more rookies.
theres a reason the movie "Idiocracy" was set in the future, not the past
lol...yeah, they'll be more mistakes in the future for sure. Thanks for watching!
I'm going to save everything. I just heard that we might be going to digital currency by time 2025 rolls around
Nice...I save all that I come across also. Thanks!
Actually a star note isn't when 2 serial numbers are the same that they add a star..
A star is added whenever they start a continuation of the printing at a different date they use the star as a reference of the first bill that gets printed on that transaction so they know when and where that process took place as a starting point
WRONG.
Not wrong call Washington DC up and ask tge treasury yourself...they'll let you know I'm right seeing there tge ones tgat told me
I was told star notes replace the sheets of notes that get damaged. They can't duplicate the serial number so they put a star behind em
Funny money
Indeed. Thanks for watching.
You have a bunch of duplicate star notes... Time to do your research.
Hi, can you explain; or point me in the right direction? I would love to learn more. Thanks.
Let's start with . .there are 12 banking districts that print notes . . it very possible to have same serial numbers . . BUT . . those serial numbers will be form a different banking district
.... Using numbers 1 thru 12 . . 1=A . . 2=B and so on . . .You need to really learn about the BEP . . Bureau of Engraving & Printing . . they are the one that PRINT bill . . The Mint mints coins . . there are 2 total different houses . . they do NOT perform the same function & it is a toatl differnt process Printing & Minting are NOT the same . . . I hope this helps . . I have a 1 hr teaching lesson about Coins & Paper money . . . and that is just class 101 @@sparechangekeeper
..what about collectors who have already bought these star notes to suddenly find out they're worthless..?..now they aren't going to be very happy about having open wallet surgery..🤔
He forgot the most important part about the new FRB printing ... Beginning in late 2024 used toilet paper will be reformulated and human blood will be used as ink.
Ha! Thanks!
I have a tri-repeater star note.
Cool! Sounds like a keeper. Thanks for watching!
