How Colonialism Set the Stage for Maui's Destruction by Fire

  • The death toll from the Maui wildfires is now about 100 and is expected to continue to climb in what is now the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century and the worst natural disaster in Hawaii's history. As recovery efforts continue, many residents are asking why Hawaii's early warning system, with about 80 alarms on the island of Maui alone, did not get activated to alert residents about the approaching flames. We speak with Kaleikoa Kaeo, professor of Hawaiian studies at the University of Hawaii Maui College, who gives a history of colonialism in Maui and how the transformation of the island for mass tourism, such as changes to agriculture and water management practices, helped to turn the area into a tinderbox. "Our people who have lived there since time immemorial are suffering because of the consequences that have been imposed really from outside foreign forces," says Kaeo.

For decades, Maui residents have been fighting to preserve this ancient seat of the kingdom of Hawaii. Just last month, the Hawaiian government passed a law that the Lahaina historical area could not be redistricted for any more development of hotels and such businesses, unless a natural disaster occurred. What are the odds..?

These beautiful people will never have their home again. There are people coming on that are saying that fema are not helping or either is the red cross. That's because there all corrupt. The people that are helping is friends and family of these precious people The Native Hawaiians need to fight this and not stop until they get justice.

Thats right! And the citizens of Lahina are already being approached by investment companies that want to buy their properties... Parasites have no shame. Not thinking about how they can help. Instead they're thinking about makin money off the devastation. Don't sell to them the dirt on your shoe. Do no business with these Parasites! They drive up housing costs leaving many locals homeless all over North America and Abroad.. They should be on blast for what they're doing and any involvement they have with these fires!
A woman that was there said many many many Hawaiian children were at home watching younger siblings with parents working when these attacks happened 💔 She was devastated by what she saw and broken.. She passed by so many people that didn't make it..
They are lying about the death toll.. The government was totally in on it imo.. A similar situation in the Yukon is happening right now(raging fires). I'll share link instead of trying to explain in comments..
I'm so so so sorry to the Beautiful People of Lahina that they're going through this devastation. My prayers are with the people of Lahina as they begin to process what has happened! And I pray for swift justice for the People! I don't understand why USA owns the Island when it belongs to the people of Hawaii! This government has done these things before. Aside from barging into countries and stealing everything they wanted, they stole the lives of countless souls. Starting wars based on pure and utter lies on lies and they know it's all lies! The royal family the Vatican and other sinister families and groups have orchestrated every war every invasion, endless devastation against humanity, & too many disasters to count.. Now they're turning on the USA Canada and beyond to gain control over the world! See while everyone else is busy being productive and living their lives, these parasites plot schemes lie and manipulate to get more more more of what ain't theirs.. They're never satisfied and so entitled! We've been funding their out of control lifestyles for way too long. We could __ the 1%, so 99% of humanity could live in peace! They want to depopulate us but it's them that need to be depopulate because they are the source of 99% of the problems humanity faces today.. They're unfit to live amongst the rest of society and need to be addressed.. If everyone got up tomorrow morning &stopped helping them impose their agendas on the world, it would all end by dinner time! Then we round them up and imprison them until their sentencing!! Just sick of seeing people suffer because of a few soulless psychopaths!! 💜🙏🏻🕊

Before I heard any mention about colonialism, I thought about Australia and the scorched earth there. I remembered an indigenous person commenting that indigenous people knew how to control the spread of fires to prevent catastrophic fires, but that colonial encroachment had changed the dynamics regarding harmony with nature. One of the first comments mentioned by reporters is that the Maui fire is the "worst disaster in Hawaii's history." Presented another way, even when the island was thick with foliage and forest before "urban" development, there were no fires that devastated the island. The indigenous Hawaiians had the same understanding of nature that the indigenous Australians possessed, but colonialism altered the dynamics because it's predicated upon a lack of respect for the people and the land.

Saying Colonialism set the stage for this to happen is like saying colonialism is to blame for any disaster that happens on the mainland. All of the land was stolen from someone at a certain point, so it's weak at best. I think the focus should be on how the current local government failed AND it's current attempt to do a land grab, stealing more land through eminent domain.

Look, having a relaxed outlook on life in nice. It helps people live a low stress life. We all want that. But if you ignore things because they are too much work for you to deal with and don't care about safety, disasters can happen. This was a freak occurrence, to be sure. So let's learn from it. I'm so sorry! But as a retired firefighter that spent most of my time fighting big big brush fires. We went into the mouth of the beast and put them out we protected big homes on the edges of these large woods full of lots of dead underlying brush compiled over many years. These fires burned Very very hot..
To create a good hot fire you must have fuel to burn . That is a must above all. Then you need good oxygen which all fires in the open have . And you need something to ignite it which is evident .
When i look at the arial footage from the plane in this video. You see at the base of the mountains where it started and burned across the grassy plain to the first course of homes furthest from the ocean. Knee high grass fires are not going to produce enough fuel, and temps that created the metal melting inferno this thing turned into.. Something besides this grass fire was being used to feed these flames into a ragging inferno. As you get into neighborhoods with walls and decorative plants and shrubs around the property. It will burn but not what you need to produce this fire. On front Street theres a two story building with asphalt parking lotat least 60 ft wide al around the building with no brush or fuel source of any kind. The metal structural I beams were heated to temps over 2000 degrees to twist and disfigure them . Theres no fuel anywhere around to create these temps. Something else was in play here people. Also no water to the hydrants!! Are you kidding me!! Even after the fire chief is screaming for water. Id lock everyone involved in this fire up immediatly until there story could prove them as innocent of crimes Against humanity. Streets and all exits were blocked off to hwy and other routes out to trap people in there to be sacrafied. Police were replying when asked why they were blocking exit routes! They replied!! Just following orders. This was a planned attack on this land. I dont care what any official said otherwise. Then to see the laws that protected this land be removed so no claims would have to be paid by insurance companies. No rebuilding permits would be issued. Its a huge issue taking place.. Im sorry to say these things . But as a firefighter i can express my opinion as a comparison to what ive experienced and seen. This grass fire could of very easily been stopped way before it came close to any homes. Weve done it numerous times as a firefighter. God be with us all in getting the truth out for all to witness..

This can happen anywhere at any time. I experienced a fire at my apartment complex a few weeks ago and the alarms were just tested a few weeks before but no alarms went off when a fire started at my complex. Fortunately it was during the day and I was home. I had just gone out to a store and returned and 30 minutes later, a lady across the hall noticed a fire a few feet from the complex and was banging on doors to get everyone out and then the police showed up and they did a great job. There were over 200 firefighters and no one was killed or hurt and I am so sad and sorry for Mai and I am praying for the families who have no place to go and the families who lost their loved ones. Something sinister happened and I hope they find out who is responsible and they'll be put behind bars not released. Why weren't there alarms? Some evil people I think are involved.

I live in Hawaii, I’ve lived in Lahaina. I have immense sympathy for this community. However, the sirens would not have made a difference as the fire moved too fast. With hurricanes and, tsunamis, and earthquakes give us some warning, some time where the sirens help but with a fast moving fire all the sirens in the world would not have helped much. I wish they would quit focusing on the siren when they KNOW it wouldn’t have made a difference. And, by experience, I have witnessed too many locals ignore the sirens during hurricane warnings. They have the attitude “ it’s gonna pass” . Makes me really doubt anything would’ve changed. Stop trying to blame something no one could’ve done anything to stop it at that time on people or agencies that couldn’t have known what was to happen. Stop with the sirens. With so much devastation the lack of preparedness is also the fault of the citizens. Since Hurricane Iwa , I have kept emergency rations and readiness plans in tact. I take it seriously, unfortunately, so many in Hawaii have the attitude, “it won’t happen to us.” This is a devastating wake up call that it CAN happen to us and it shows us how unprepared we ALL are.

Also you could see the fire make its way through a giant farmland to the town. There was plenty of time for the sirens and if the sirens wouldnt help, what are they for? A simple siren while the fire was in the farmland with wind direction giving a obvious path of the fire, a siren wouldve help save at least one life. Maybe you could explain to everyone why its ok no sirens went off and that the power was left on so fire fighters cant get to areas needed and also possibly not create more fires since it was SO windy. Also, where was the head of Maui emergency response team? out of town, I answered for you, so the second in command then, out of town too, there I got that for you too. There was a obvious lack of preparedness and compitence that led to loss of life. Yes it was a horrible fire with bad winds on dry conditions but that fire didnt start in Lahiana, it still took a lot of time to get through the fields and into the town. Please dont work for a emergency response team.

Unfortunately, she lost her neighbor while running & she barely made it by jumping over the wall into the ocean. She was in the water for 7+ hours & she would feel hypothermic, so she would move closer to the fire to warm up but then her body would begin to burn from the heat of the fire. There are hundreds of stories like this. I'm sending Lahaina all my love & prayers. Ke hoʻouna aku nei au i koʻu aloha a me nā pule.🙏 Lahaina will never be the same. 💔

.Many of some of the world's richest people own mansions and hectares of land in Maui in a part of the island
Which have not at all been affected by this environmental and human catastrophe.
I understand that Locals in the area where this incredible destruction has taken place have been approached by realtors for some time. They have resisted. Strange, is it not? that this incredible destruction which has cost many lives and destroyed houses and infrastructure happened in this part of the island.
Plans to build a "Smart city" in the utterly destroyed area are circulating on alternative media channels. Is this true? 😮All conspiracy theories I hear from the fact checkers Thanks for your info DN but what happened in Maui needs to be investigated, properly investigated.
Democracy Now, please investigate further to let the world know what really happened in Maui.
    Nobody knows right now.
What the general public is told right now, globally, is that this catastrophe has been caused by climate change, like the fires in Greece, Rhodes, Corfu, Canada. THAT is the main message.
Yes, climate change is happening but the incessant message all over the world is that climate change is the major culprit. Ps. The authorities in Rhodes and Corfu have said that the recent fires were most likely caused by arson because various fires occurred simultaneously in different places. What's going on?
In my view this report re the terrible disaster is very shallow. Dig deeper. This is not good enough. Sorry.

People should know that In Hawaii on the first Tuesday of the month there is a testing of the emergency warning sirens. Hawaii doesn’t have a wild fire warning siren. There is 4 siren alarms and each one is a different sound for the specific impending danger to be warned of. But I think anyone of those sirens could still be set off because people will pay attention to sirens going off during a time of day where they aren’t being tested. I think for as big as the fire was, cars exploding and the amount of smoke engulfing the streets people would get a clue that it’s time to run. Law enforcement was on the scene on loud speakers telling the people in their homes and businesses to evacuate. I’m saying you don’t need the state of Hawaii to set off alarms! Just grab your family and go!!

There's only one road around Tahoe, one lane in either direction with few exits out of the basin and on any given summer day, it's essentially a parking lot. The cost just to widen the road is mind boggling with the environmental impact work alone expensive and years in the making. Bonus fact? The Tahoe Basin has a scenario for a Tsunami event that would result in the deaths of tens of thousands with weeks before large scale rescue efforts would be effective.

Cell service dropped so evac alerts were not delivered. The fire traveled from Santa Paula to Ventura in just over an hour. Non native trees and plants fueled the fire. Our native oak and manzanita smoulder but don't ignite, but the imported eucalyptus and palm trees exploded like a wooden matchstick. So many similarities. Apart from the death toll.

Oh, my God didn’t get stuck in traffic. The police blocked them so they would all die. The highways were completely open “escape if we all don’t stand up and fight or government, it’s going to come into our back door the government got sloppy with this job, and the fact that you’re speaking that it was a powerline accident is blown. There is so much evidence here to prove the evil intent on these people and what they’re still going through no help

Using this event to further Anti-White propaganda is sick, but I would expect nothing less from democracy now.

It's not democracy that does this, it is anti-western marxist anti-American pro-fascist/communistic forces and theocratic forces, so basically all of America's enemies have spread these ideas and they have hijcaked the enitre left with SJWism and huge swaths of the right with isolationism. Isolationism only helps CCP/Kremlin, SJWism does the same, funny enough, they both demonize America and pretend we are the devils, both ideologies fall for the CCP/Kremlin/Mao/Stalin narratives that have been propagated for decades that demonize our history while ignoring the bad histories of non-westerners. This is straight out of Stalin's mind. Marxist SJWism demonizes Westerners and whines on about "Stolen land and Imperialism" all the time ignoring the reality that all land is stolen. Isolationists have started to do the same, and whine on about how the West is "Imperialist" and NATO is evil but somehow Russia and China can conquer as much land as they want, but we cannot even send aid or intervene? Double standards designed to neuter our military power, what happened to American military pride? WE've all lost trust in government and DNC and GOP, but why lose trust in our own capabilities to fight off the foreign invaders before they even make it out of their home nation? We're America, it's clear Isolationism is an attempt to neuter our global power, how can anyone who calls themselves a patriot be isolationist, that message is to all the modern MAGA who hate Neocons and Coproratism so much that they have sold themselves to barbarian foreignors foreign policy goals (Isolationism only helps the elites of our enemy, don't destroy our nation to spite our elites, being ruled by foreign elites would be even worse, lets deal with our home elites and our foreign elites, all enemies, foreign and domestic, remember?).
Isolationism and SJWism are both wings of the enemy, weapons of ideology and planted seeds of division. Isolationism is rightwing Anti-Americanism and Anti-Westernism and Anti-Free Worldism, while SJWism is the same but for the leftwing. Both want to see a collapse of the power of the Free World. SJWs believe we live in some fascist dystopia, and Isos believe we live in some communist dystopia, reality is both of you are loons who are going to try to bring us to either of those scenarios. SJWs hate the idea that humanity might possibly be diplomatically and economically united by the United States because they hate white people, and Isos hate it cause they think their own elites might hate white people and will sell us off to unite humanity. Yes, the Free World has grown in recent history, but this is a good thing, we just need to ignore the divide et impera propaganda from Isos and SJWs, who from two directions attempt to destroy all the work our ancestors have died for. Isos aren't anti-white, but they don't realize that they support a foreign policy that would lead to the rise of CCP as sole superpower, which would not be good for any group of people, even Chinese people to be honest, as they'd just be warrior slaves in Jinping's conquests. SJWs pretty much are anti-white, at this point they openly admit that they think white males are evil and they scapegoat them for everything. The overlap comes with the US government and colonialism and interventionism, Isos and SJWs tend to agree on things regarding the US-Kremlin, which is so weird, Isos pretend to be patriots yet follow the Putin/KGB narrative? And its not a new narrative either, this is Stalin's narrative, you know, the Communist, yet Isos say they are anti-communist? yet they are spreading tankie propaganda, some of them have gone so far to defend the CCP Empire. I mean that's insane. A republican, a MAGA person, defending the CCP against America???????
      WHAT???!!!
WHY??? I know you guys hate Biden...but...WhAT THE FUK. Don't betray your entire nation just cause you don't like the DNC, I don't like the DNC either, but our nation is more important, we've lost so many in wars fighting for freedom, don't give it all up now by falling for the enemy's lies.
The fact that SJWs and Isos find some common ground in the Communist marxist talking points about how the West is Imperialist despite the US not annexing an inch of ground in over 120 years while the Kremlin/Soviets have done so all the time even right now and CCP has done so as well, from Tibet/Xinjiang to more recent annexations of Vietnamese and Filipino Islands. Well, that should be a red flag, it should show you that the isos and sjws are both manipulated by the same anti-American, anti-Western, anti-democratic forces.
Democracy isn't the problem. Anti-Americanism is. America created democracy, the best idea in human history, and now our own people are being manipulated from both sides to abandon all the progress our ancestors have made for enlightenment liberal democracy, the form of government our founding fathers invented.
