  • Dead Pigeon Gallery Presents - David Sinclair - Dockers Exhibition.
In September 1995, 500 Mersey Dock and Harbour workers were sacked for not crossing a picket line set up by sacked Dockers from a small stevedore firm called Torside. They were then in dispute for two and a half years. Dave Sinclair supported and documented the dispute from the first to the last day.

My late father was a docker back in the early 60s and he told me stories of hundreds of men waiting to get picked for a shift and how lucky he was that his dad knew someone that got him a card to work every day but even then they gave work not as fortunate as my dad at a few hours at a time ,my dad said it was probably because most people where so malnourished it was a way of getting the next shift with energy to work ,my dad decided to find his fortune in London and ended up working on the docks , he said the proper cockneys where exactly the same as the lpool ones ,hard working full of pride ,always had a scam on the go and he said almost as quick witted but they excepted him because he was a docker . When my dad passed away we had a gentleman who had worked on the docks my dad had spoke about turn up at his funeral, his name was Dave Jones but my dad had always called him Japanese harry because he was captured by the Japanese in world war 2 and had his arm stretched on a rack . I don’t know his full story but he used to sell Swiss watches he borrowed from the ships and because his arm was so thin he could have twenty all up his arm ,I never new if this was my dad pulling my leg until I met him ,when I realised it was Japanese harry I asked him the time and he answered back Paris New York Milan or Liverpool. He turned up for my dads funeral and that made a shit day better.
