What about the calcium and fluoride in toothpastes? Does that invalidate the fast as these nutrients nourish the teeth n anything that nourishes our body breaks the fast?

    • @fboff7978

I am not a Muslim but am related to several through marriage & also family members who have converted to Islam.
I am however someone who for many years now has been fasting both intermittently & prolonged for health & weight loss reasons & as a Christian I do pray while I fast too.
Through my own personal 'health research' I know that toothpaste & mouthwash 'definitely' do illicit an insulin response in the gut 'from the receptors on the tongue & in the mouth' which will fire up the digestive system from the sweet taste in the mouth, thus ultimately 'breaking ones fast!'
In my country of origin 'Ghana', we have what's called the 'Miswak' or 'Chewing stick' as it's commonly called, similar to what you described that the 'Profit, peace be upon him' also used. There is also a little sponge form of the stick, made from thin strands of the same wood and you simply pop it into your mouth and chew on it to moisten it up & then proceed to use this to scrub one's teeth. These items are found all over the country but originated in the south of Ghana if I'm not mistaken?
As a child, I can remember my mother 'God bless her soul' occasionally using these items here in the UK once in a while too... I guess certain traditions would never die & she would always say to us 'British born kids' who initially found it to be an odd thing' that the 'Miswak' was the best kind of toothbrush one could use, she even mentioned the use of charcoal which we found completely bizarre but low & behold, fast forward 20 years or so & all the toothpaste/cosmetic manufacturers have a product that contains 'charcoal' in it, something that has been used in Africa the Arab states & Asia for centuries moreover thousands of years...
My mother would go on to tell us that using the 'Miswak' was far better than the 'Western-style' toothbrushes that we used. I myself never got the hang of it back in the day as a child but I have since learned to appreciate its use now as I do not use 'toothpaste/mouthwash' when I fast.
I did use 'baking soda' for a time but that can/will erode your tooth enamel the more you use it, so I stopped!!! However, it is very effective!
So all in all, the bottom line is 'toothpaste/mouthwash' does illicit an insulin response in the body which in essence 'breaks your fast'! But I guess it all depends on how strict you wanna be with it?

    Basically to summarize :
The best thing to do is use a miswak. Islam pioneered cleanliness in a way and its highly recommended to keep the mouth clean and not disturb others with bad smell.
Is it ok to add some toothpaste? Yes - BUT only a little as you're not allowed to swallow it - if you do swallow some by accident it will most likely invalidate the fast (allah knows best). Its also preferential to use flavorless toothpaste.

      @SafaRaghib Před 10 lety

You can brush your teeth with toothpaste before Fajr and after Maghrib, just avoid it while fasting. So during the fast if you think your breath is becoming stale, try to fix the problem by rinsing your mouth carefully or brushing with a miswak, or if you're careful you can use toothpaste. Even notedly 'strict' scholars like Sheikh Ibn Baz say it is permissible to use toothpaste. Just don't swallow.

my personal recommendation : do not use toothpaste. use miswak.
    Hadith : sahih bukhari : volume 3, book 31, number 128
    narrated by abu hurraira (R.A)
Allah's apostle (sallalahu alaihi wasallam) said : By Him in whose hands my soul is 'the unpleasant smell coming out from the mouth of the fasting person is better in the sight of Allah (swt) than the smell of musk.
so should we even try to stop something which is 'liked' by Allah swt?
Allah knows best and may he guide us all on the right path. aameen
    assalamualaikum wr wb.

This toothpaste stuff is ridiculous to me because Islam is easier than people make it out to be. When you use toothpaste, the intention is not to sustain your body with its nutrition as it has none, but to simply maintain hygiene; something Islam encourages. It’s simple logic!

It is sad that a lot of people are very ignorant with regards to the understanding derived from the heading regarding a person who is fasting (this is not directed at Shaykh Abdul Nasir). The smell that pleases Allah (س/ت) is the smell that emnates from a fasting person's mouth due to the buildup of gases inside their empty stomach, it is NOT referring to a person's bad breath resulting from a person's lack of oral hygiene. The two are completely different.
That's why if a person washes their mouth with Peridex and then rinses it out before Fajr, then the only time a pungent smell will emnate from their mouth is when the entire day has passed by and only an hour or two remains before they have to break their fast. That's completely different from the person who's breath stinks because of the food stuck between their teeth along with their nasty milk breath they've acquired from drinking mango lassi.
Peridex is an antiseptic mouthwash, it is different from an antibacterial mouthwash such as Listerine in the sense that it doesn't use alcohol to kill the bacteria in one's mouth (which is also very painful).
