  • Here's another collection of Dorney Park scenes from different years around the 1960s. Notice the train has two different paint jobs through the short video. Includes much more of other then-popular rides. Enjoy

I worked there as a 16 year old kid in '85. This is how it looked still then. Before it was taken over. Haven't been back since the 90s. Now, we just go to Knoebels.

This is mid-1960s. Fun times! We used to drive up from S Jersey. It was a pleasant country-feeling place, no gate charges as yet. Knoebels has that feel nowadays.

Wish I could see more of this. Went to Hersheypark and Dorney Park most of my childhood, only to go back as an adult, and not recognized either place. I was just at Hersheypark last weekend., and only a handful of things I remember, are the same.

I grew up in that park. We lived in Whitehall and rode our bikes there on Mondays when they were closed. We would go under the entrances to the rides, under the metal ramps to the ride, and collect the ride tickets that got dropped by the ride operators. Back then I think a book of 50 was about $ 5. We would usually collect at least that much. What we did as kids.....! I remember the boats, the coaster, the flying planes, and Journey To the Center of the Earth! The Zephyr was always a joy to ride...the line for the boats was the longest wait.

😀Wow ! That's a historical treasure trove of great, clear footage of Dorney's heydays . The great AlFundo coaster entrance marquee should have never been torn down 😒 Before I had the courage to ride "The Coaster" I would stand and watch for long periods of time people having fun plunging down the first drop 6:54 . It was where the main parking lot was for many years.

My mother, a coaster aficionado before I arrived on the scene, got me on The Coaster with her on our first visit in 1965; I was 9 and had never ridden a roller coaster prior to visiting Dorney Park. Waiting at the station to ride The Coaster you could look straight across to see everyone enjoying the mayhem as they drove the bumper cars. I remember the smooth metal surface of the bumper car ride. Impacts were pretty jarring. My younger brother made it a point to crash into me at every opportunity. I'm sure I got him back a few times.
Up the long hill to where The Coaster took that first plunge. I can hear the heavy chain clanking as we went up and up. To the left and downward was Journey to the Center of the Earth, the Boat Ride, The Zephyr and the Space Ride that went around and around. I see it pretty clearly in memory and I can hear the squeals of joy, the laughter and the low hum of the park's ambient sounds. Then we are accelerating down that first hill on The Coaster and in a moment are turning through the treetops. That part, being in and amongst the tops of the trees, is for me, the best part of that ride.
At dusk, when the lights started going on, Dorney Park became a different place. Strategically, my mother liked to wait until it started getting dark to get Belgian Waffles with a slice of vanilla ice cream. A slow walk around the park as twilight bloomed. So charming thinking of it now.

@@TralfazConstructionYes, a lot of good memories during those times but the removal of all those classic rides was a truly heartbreaking. This is why I prefer Knoebels over Dorney nowadays, it's what Dorney use to be like.
Did you mother ever ride the Allentown Central Park Skyclone coaster (1927-1951)? I have yet to talk to anyone about their experience on that monster ride. So i was just curious if she or anyone else you know had talked about riding it .

@k moyer To my knowledge she did not ride that one. She did go to Coney Island on a couple of school trips and rode The Cyclone. When she was growing up in western Pennsylvania, she used to go to a place called Kennywood Park. There were coasters there, but I don't recall any particular names of any of them.

I remember the Pennsylvania Dutch Days in the food pavilions. The food was incredible and the apple peeling contest as to who could have the longest single peel was lots of fun to watch. In the park my favorite food was ice cream and waffles. Corporate takeover put an end to the park as an unhurried fun place to go to with your friends and family.

Hard to immagine Dorney Park looking like this. I'd probably prefer this Dorney to modern Dorney, which feels overly corporate (although Deamon Drop is a nice addition that fits in perfectly with this Dorney, probably the 1 Cedar Fair addition that feels like it could fit in the park in this video). I wish I could have experienced Thunderhawk back then; buzbars and no taming the ride via using computers to reprofile for percision (ie more airtime). The Thunderhawk today does not feel like the coaster featured here would have.

@@easynhonest I definately like Knobles better than Dorney from my trip this summer (although we did get some cool private events at Dorney, like getting to do a scare maze...in June and getting to go inside a section of Thunderhawk and stick our heads through the track when there were no trains on the course) so that even more makes me wish I would have gotten to experience the pre-Cedar Fair Dorney Park. I do like Steel Force, Talon, and Hydra but they aren't worth the park loosing it's soul like it has.

@@urbex_coasters yes you did miss out on "the coaster" it was a classic. The Coaster "squealed" around corners...rumbled down hills....and gave you air time on the bunny hills on the way back! One of the turns straightens out into a small hill...as it does it literally would "throw" you r head at the person aside you. The later in the day....the harder the "snap"! Was awesome!

I don’t know why they still call Thunderhawk a classic coaster. It lost so many of its classic features such as the curved station, tunnel, buzz bars, no seat dividers, and no trim brakes. Nowadays it’s less of a classic PTC coaster and more of a 1980s Dinn Corporation woodie.

    • @JeffreyPiatt

This was back when Dorney Park was good. Back before those corporate big wigs from Cedar Fair came in and started adding all these big fancy rides from the future. Before they put a focus on safety and brought the park into the 21st Century. Shame on them for investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the park!
