I actually think it’s just as racist (maybe if not more) to expect someone to represent their culture. You’re forcing them into a box, denying their individuality. A person should be free to pick and choose what aspects of their culture they like and represent (if any), and even to embrace aspects of other cultures. That to me is how we get diversity.

The way to cast diversity is not having someone play a character purely to have diversity but because that character's culture is a big part of their identity. Stay away from stereotypes unless it is satire or a social commentary. Then instead of telling the actor exactly HOW to play a diverse character (specific accent, stereotypical jokes, cliches, etc) you let the actor chose how to represent their own culture. If Nickelodeon was up front with Gabriel about the character from the get go then he would be more prepared and can chose to not be a part of the project if he felt like he was the diversity checkmark.
