  • Collin O’Mara, president and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, reveals why it is essential that we connect our children and future generations with wildlife and the outdoors - and how doing so is good for our health, economy and environment. Collin O’Mara serves as President and CEO of the National Wildlife Federation, America’s largest wildlife conservation organization with 52 state and territorial affiliates and nearly six million hunters, anglers, birders, gardeners, hikers, paddlers, and wildlife enthusiasts. Under O’Mara’s leadership, the National Wildlife Federation is focused on recovering America’s wildlife, improving management of and access to public lands, restoring America’s water bodies, advancing environmental education (including publishing Ranger Rick® magazines), and connecting every American child with the great outdoors. Prior to the National Wildlife Federation, O’Mara led the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control as Cabinet Secretary from 2009 through 2014. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Im such an advocate for exchanging some of the screen time for our kids to green time. I love the concept of the green hour. And esp the connections that Collin’s talk shows between restoring kids to nature and out door play can help restore our wildlife and environment.

Had a similar experience growing up as I would play in the woods after school with friends. Our imaginations ran wild as we explored the world we lived in. Had the good fortune to live in a place that not only had the four seasons, but, also wetlands, a bay, and an ocean to explore. it is crucial to preserve as much nature as we can for our children, and our children's children. I still feel like a child when I'm out in nature as I try to learn something new each and every time I go out in it. It is becoming more and more crucial for children in this day and age to experience a piece of paradise, which is what we call nature, before it is lost. And, Collin is right, we need to do this not only to save the planet, but also to save ourselves. Very pertinent talk. Keep up the good work.
