  • How is America to be defined? By its failures or its triumphs? Today, there seems to be an obsession with the former and a dismissal of the latter. Is this dark vision of the freest and most prosperous nation on earth an accurate narrative or a cynical distortion? James Robbins, columnist for USA Today and author of "Erasing America," considers that question in this video. How we view America's past will very much shape America's future.

    Script:
    Do you remember America?
If you read about it in a history textbook, you probably learned about a land of oppression, racism, sexism, income inequality, police brutality, and imperial wars. (Aside from that, it was a great place.)
That is how America is portrayed in most American high schools and colleges-and in America’s media, films, and by its progressive politicians.
In the words of filmmaker Michael Moore, America is “a nation founded on genocide, built on the backs of slaves, and maintained through the subjugation of women to second-class citizenship and economic disempowerment.”
Is that America’s history? Is that who Americans were-and are?
George Orwell understood that the most effective way to destroy a people is to deny and obliterate their own understanding of their history.
History is much more than a collection of facts. History, and our understanding of it, tells us who we are as a people in the same way your personal memories and experiences define and shape who you are.
Wipe out your memory, and you wipe out your identity.
When you raise a generation of Americans to hold their country’s past in contempt by exaggerating America’s faults and ignoring its triumphs, then they will have no respect for American institutions or the beliefs on which the nation is based.
It hasn’t always been this way. Until the last few decades, liberals and conservatives alike shared a common understanding of America’s origins, its history, and its mission of spreading liberty-within America and around the world.
They recognized America as the country of the Pilgrims and Jamestown, of the self-evident truths of the Declaration of Independence, of the individual rights won through revolution and secured in the U.S. Constitution.
This was the country of the frontier spirit and of almost unlimited possibilities; the country that paid for the sin of slavery with the carnage of its Civil War; of economic dynamism and endless invention; of unparalleled individual opportunity; and the country that defeated fascism and communism in the 20th century.
Previous generations took all this for granted and reveled in it.
    So what changed?
Starting in the 1960s, a new, so-called “progressive,” narrative took hold that sought not to uplift, inspire, and unite, but to demean, degrade and divide. It sought to replace the pride of American achievement with shame.
Ironically, this all happened while America was making extraordinary strides in civil rights-especially for minorities and women.
But anything less than perfection-which can never exist, given that every society is composed of flawed human beings-is now considered a total failure; and victims of the past are elevated as an indictment of the present.

Ever since I was a kid, I've been drawn to america (I am from the UK). Like, almost obsessed. Just thinking about, picturing, imagining living and being in America gave me chills. It's always been impossible to describe, it's something to do with the way it looks, the sky, the wide roads and beautiful houses, the spirit of the people, the accent and way they talk, the big cities and the huge, heart fluttering wilderness, the history and the present. The sunshine, the winters, the variety of towns and nature. And as I've grown older, and learned more; the character of the people. Nice, good hearted. Who tell stories about kindness and good winning over evil, effort being rewarded, cruelty being defeated. The ease with which people talk to eachother, regardless of race or ethnic or cultural differences. The genuine warmth and compassion, the sense of community and pride. It's all one big mesh of awesome, and I dream of living there one day. I hope I am not seeing the end of the America that's had a deep seated sense of "home" in my soul since I was 3. Please guys, do your best to get through this tough time, and ignore the people who are constantly trying to boil your bloods in anger at eachother and make you feel ashamed of who you are. No country I know of has as much right to be PROUD of itself for all the good it has done and for the greatness of its people.

I agree with Mythron about the future is what we make it. But this video has as much misinformation than its trying to dispell. America was "founded" by Columbus for economic purposes and exploited local populations and lands, The American economy was built off the poor (slaves and low wage workers), and the civil war ended slavery, but didn't "pay" for the awful deeds as civil rights came nearly 100 years after. You said America was built on the principle of liberty, these are major events in American history and liberty was not part of it for a large portion of the population, unless you were a white male and owned land.
Let's face it, the right is losing power and they can feel it. As blacks, women, and the lower class gain more power, their arguments about liberty and an unjustified fear mongering make them look like hypocrites. "Ironically, this all happened while America was making extraordinary strides in civil rights", because of those who were oppressed want to make sure it doesn't happen again.
We learn history to understand how we got to where we are and learn from those before us. I agree that some universities fall way more to the left than to the right, but knowing the facts and interpreting them how the Right wants to see it is just as bad. We all know what this country did, and it was wrong and it is time to learn, react, and improve. Now like Mythron said, The future is ours.

From 1979 on the US and other Western countries supported the Taliban, parts of them later on formed al-Qaeda and executed the 9/11 attacks. 1980 America overthrew the Turkish government, they also supported the brutal greece military Junta, overthrew governments in Argentina, backed genocidal autocrats in Pakistan, Indonesia and so on. And even today the US supports Saudi Arabia which is a brutal monarchy that kills it's own people and funds terrorism and had huge involvement regarding 9/11. In addition it is bombing Yemen back to the stone age, willing to let them starve. I am not saying America is the most brutal country, obviously nobody can compete with Nazi Germany, the Soviet Union or China (especially under Mao). But for modern day standards (post WW2/non communist nations) it is the most cruel and death bringing nation and number one supplier of autocracies, dictators and so on. I don't remember any coup hosted by Canada, post WW2 Germany, Italy and so on (eventho they support autocrats that got into power via US coup). Successful by which metrics? The USA lags behind quite a few other countries in literacy, average life span, and certain other "quality of life" statistics; while those aren't failures, they certainly aren't successes. And while the USA is diverse, it isn't THAT diverse. The overwhelming majority of Americans are Christian or at least profess to be, and an even greater majority of us speak English and no other language; Spanish, Mandarin Chinese, and other languages are either very marginalized or their public profile in our culture is condemned by millions of Americans. Not to mention the fact that least 75 percent of Americans are primarily Caucasoid. By any measure of diversity, India has us beat: no fewer than four major religions (Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism); approximately three dozen languages, each one spoken by at least 1 million people; and at least three biological human races (Caucasoid, Veddoid, Mongoloid), none of which can be called a marginalized minority from a political standpoint.

I was so proud of America that day. People are imperfect, so of course our history is going to be imperfect, but America has been able to look at herself and move forward and believe we can be better and strive for it.
Only seeing the faults of something as beautiful as our country's history is like only see the faults of some of the greatest people you've ever known or only seeing the faults of yourself. Shaming doesn't help people or countries to get better. Use the good to give you confidence to confront and change the bad.

I regret my errors along the way, but use them to try to better myself. Same with our country, and others for that matter. As people evolve through education and mistakes, so do nations. We are not perfect. Our country is not perfect. But judge us not by our past but by our efforts to learn from our mistakes and better ourselves. No one is perfect. No country is perfect. So we need to stop throwing stones at each other and strives to learn from the mistakes of past generations and ourselves. We each have our own back yard to clean up, so stop being consumed by that of others. I love Prager because it addresses the elephant in the room. Unless there is a country or person somewhere who has mastered the art of walking on water, don’t be so quick to judge. We are all being judged by someone that has all the facts. Appreciate your blessings and stop complaining about America. It is a great country, mistakes and all. Love her or leave her. Thank God, that is still a choice!

@Clemente Nicado Yelmene You're partially right.
Slavery in the south was nowhere near as efficient as 'slavery' in the north. Slaves would regularly sabotage the produce (rightfully so) in the south. There were many other issues but this was one of the defining factors in the economic success of the north and the country as a whole.
To say America was built on slavery is fallacious at best, it is to deny the fact that America was decades or even centuries ahead of the rest of the world. America didn't enslave anyone, only purchased them and (later) freed them. Considering some places in Africa still have slavery today, I'd say those who were lucky enough and strong enough to see through the more sinister sections of history would be very glad they did so.

The things you said reminded me of all the bad things that happened in the States which seems really negative; but then the graphics showed me that this was wrong and the good things are happy and inspiring and the bad things are associated with words like demean, degrade, and divide.
I don't even mind that the good points were just the bad points with 'no longer exist' or 'abolished' at the end. I guess everything works out for the better eventually. Top marks.

Hippies were not Leftists. They were not political. They did not march or participate in protests. The goal was to work on spiritual matters.
The Leftists who had long hair were Berkeley hang outs.
The Vietnam war was rejected by Hippies. It was proven to be an illegal war. LBJ lied.
Hippies simply were suburban whites who saw consumerism as shallow. They saw establishment churches as material. So they rejected materialism and carved out a slightly different lifestyle.
Marxist Herbert Marcuse is the father of the New Left: he created “Make Love not War” so the hippies did that. But they were not Marxists. They grew up to fear Communism. They lived through the Red Scare, the 1959 Cuban missile crisis and the Vietnam War. They rejected Communism.

But in a flat out conclusive result. If the diabolical Left miraculously wins, then the country is theirs. But imagine what could do if pure Conservatism was throughout every office in the land.
