    Thanks very much for the video. It helped me get the job done. Let me just add a lesson learned for others. I wasn't careful enough, so after filling in the new sand, I found the pipe was too high, so the lid wouldn't close. I had to vacuum out the new sand, and be careful to hold the standing pipe down firmly as I added in the new sand again. Then the lid fit just fine.

    Your sand doesn't need to be replaced. I reused the old sand, I created a little sluice box with my wagon and filled it with water and all the contamination floated to the top, I just tipped it and drained it off, it took about 4 times and about 15 min. Then I scooped the sand back in. Works like a charm.

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před rokem +6

      Yeah it's not so much the junk in the sand but the rounded out bits that get so small that they start coming through the laterals, I take it you sluice the smaller particles out, sounds pretty interesting! Thank you and thank you for watching!👍

    I was replacing the sand in the filter, tried to put the valve back on the lateral to make sure it was lined up and when I went to take it off, it pulled the lateral back up overtop of the sand. 🤦🏽‍♀️ I tried scooping the sand back around so the lateral assembly could sit flush with the filter, but it went go back down. Any suggestions? Do I have to dump all this back out to get the lateral back flat?

    Obo😂😂😂…
    I just bough my kid a 14” abive ground pool, and have the same sand filter, for some reason it has what it looks like cotton inside, not sand.
    I also noticed on your set up you have what it looks like a Hayward “mini” filter, or what is it?
    Also, can a water pump be regulated if its too strong for a pool?
    Thanks.

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před 11 dny +2

      Pool filter balls are a newer invention instead of sand they look like cotton balls I really haven't dealt with them to know if they are good or not, the hayward is a automatic pool chlorinater! Only pumps that have speed control can be regulated, 1hp is good up to 24 ft and I use one on my 27 round with no issues, you could probably use a 3/4 or 1 with a 14ft round, thanks for watching!

    My preferred methodology for this, especially if I am servicing the pool, since starting work on pools in 1975, is to get rid of the woefully inefficient sand filter! You are paying so much for each kilowatt hour to operate the pool pump, in my mind, it is much more efficient to plumb in a more efficient filtration system, cartridge, or DE, and you can have a shorter run time on the pump, since the aforementioned filtration system will have much more filtration area, and smaller particulate debris (micron size) will be filtered out. You will also virtually not have to use any high cost "specialty chemicals" to keep the water clear. In the Los Angeles area for many years, the pools were virtually all sand filters, in the 1920's-mid to the mid 1950's, and then switched to these more efficient filtration systems. The labor and time for a sand changeout is equivalent of 1/3-1/2 the cost of putting in a whole new more efficient filtration equipment. You have a very good tutorial. There is the more efficient glass beaded sand substitute that you can use in lieu of sand, if you are sold on keeping the sand filter, and this will make your sand filter much more efficient, as well.

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před 9 měsíci +3

      I think it's kind of a give and take, DE by far is the best filtering, but alot of maintenance and cartridge filters get expensive, I think it's just really whatever you choose know what you are getting and have to do to maintain it! Good advice though and thanks for watching!👍😊

    Wow people when you comment or make a video you should probably know what it is your talking about or be a professional. The reason to change the silica sand is because after time it will loose its square crystalline shape and become round or irregular
    Also depending on where you live you may have other type of sand or grains polluting your #20 silica. Remember sand filter won’t get rid of sand of a certain size unless it can pass the laterals. How much #20 silica do you put in. Some filters the larger ones require pea gravel not only silica sand. A good rule of thumb when using silica sand is fill the filter to the portion of the filter where it starts to curve. That’s when it’s full. Also put a tennis ball and tape it down to the stand pipe so you don’t clog your filters laterals with sand. You don’t replace your sand if it’s just dirty or dump it out and reuse it. A good measure of how worn out your sand is is looking at how much sand has backwashed out. This is how much sand you could conceivably replace after running a garden hose into the sand and agitating the sand to get rid of as much dirt as possible as the dirty water overflows from the top. No matter how much you backwash it will still be f’d up nasty. Those skimmer socks will help with this… the ingress of fine particulate. Remember a good filter is like Tetris a bad one is like jenga all the squares have to line up to filter water correctly.

      Good video! Idea: instead of taping the center tube, put a baggie or sheet of plastic wrap over the tube, put the bleeder in the baggie also, then wrap a rubber band around it.

      It's not bad once you learn everything I do have a bunch of videos on pools from installation to chemicals , you can watch them to at least familiarize yourself with pools, I try to go into detail on the videos to help out people that have never owned or worked on pools! Good luck and any questions along the way let me know! Thanks for watching!👍😊

    How hard is it to change if the pool is already full and open???

    • @WhitehouseFarmVet
      @WhitehouseFarmVet  Před rokem +4

      It's easy you just need to use a skimmer block or plug and a return threaded block or plug to prevent water from coming out, then just do all the steps I did in the video! Good luck and thank you for watching!👍😊

    What he did not show you was how hard it was to get the agitator back all the way down in the sand. You must do that in order to get the valve back on the top and secured.

    If your going to go to the trouble of taking sand out of tank, why not put new sand in tank, you don’t put used oil in your car when you change oil do you…

      Because I didn’t have the extra 700 dollars to spend but I had the extra 3 hours and 150 bucks . Trust me would have been wayyyy easier to just replace the filter but not all of us have endless income

      Because i had sand changed when closing for the winter but now sand is being pumped back into the pool so I have to do this again. Might need new sand either way

    I don't see the point in sand changes. If a sand filter needs a sand change, it is cheaper to replace it with a cartridge filter. No matter how good any sand filter is, a cartridge will filter more and finer. The multiport valve will need work sooner or later, so it makes sense to replace with something better and cheaper in the long run. Replacing a cartridge takes minutes.

      Well I can tell you from someone who has done pools and every kind of filter for 20 plus years you are wrong on many levels! Sand filters are the easiest and cheapest to maintain over DE and cartridge! And DE actually gives you the clearest pool water!!!! but also has alot of upkeep and it's own issues and expenses! Cartridge filters are 60 plus dollars and only last a couple years, sand is only 12 dollars a bag and only require 1 to 3 depending on size that's less than 30 dollars and that is over a 5 to 7 year period!!! So no Cartridge filters are not cheaper and need to be cleaned out all the time and clog quicker because you are right the do filter finer particulate but costs more and more maintenance! Multipurport valves and the spyder gaskets rarely need replacing! I have done 1000's of pools over the years and the ones I work on and replace the most and normally replace with a sand filter are DE and Cartridge filters!
