- Recently, I switched from iMovie to Final Cut Pro for editing my CZcams videos. Since it's been a couple of months, I wanted to loop back and share my thoughts on Final Cut Pro and some FCP basics you NEED to know if you're getting started on this video editing software.

One of my favorite features in Final Cut Pro is you can hit "R" on your keyboard, select a portion of your clip, then hit delete... so easy for cutting out your breaths/pauses instead of using the blade tool!!! That sped up my editing time so much!

Bruh you just saved half of the hours of my life
I recommend creating a folder for each video you're working on and creating a new library for each video to put in said folder. You can create a template folder to stick on your desktop and drag it on to your external drive when you create new videos, rename it and such. When you've finished a video you can drag that entire folder to wherever you're archiving it and start the process again. I figured this out after I had more than 10 videos in the same library and it confused me and looked messy. It comes down to preference ultimately and what works best for you. Hope this helps any users of FCPX.

It's very speedy. amzn.to/3boBZii I don't recommend the Lacie for editing off of because I don't think the read/write speeds are fast enough for it especially if working with 4K footage but I think they are great hard drives to store projects on once they are completed.

@@funtoyfilms7170 I own final cut and I love it! I get to play a lot more than with iMovie, I chose final cut over premier cuz with final you only pay once! and with practice you learn it’s basically the same ☺️
By the way, the tip about editing on an external hard drive is spot on. I had several catastrophic crashes trying to use my Mac for FCPX editing (as great as it is). Getting an SSD drive is an absolute must!

I have been editing on iMovie for the past year but actually got FCP a few months ago AND STILL haven't used it because I haven't learned the software just yet/didn't know if it was completely worth it to make the switch!

I just got the lacie external harddrive and started editing and storing on it...it makes such a difference! Thank you so much for this tip. It feels like such a gift to have the equipment to make this all flow with organization and ease. Now that I think of it, I also just upgraded to the macbook pro and bought the sd card adapter you suggest...all because of you. Thank you Cathrin. I love you!
Thank you SO much ... I am 20 days into FCP and I’ve been so confused about the filing system and it’s been driving me crazy and none of the tutorials explained it as well as you just did. Soooooo grateful... prob worth mentioning about re-linking any files if you move them ... I moved some of mine and FCP freaked out! I’ve worked it out now but I guess that’s one for a later video. I love seeing what final cut pro looks like on the back end. I am using iMovie now but know it isn't long before I bite the bullet and get final cut pro. I love the color correction feature! Because I film my art this will come in very handy! Thank you, Catherin!
If you want true color grading get Davinci Resolve.
I used iMovie for my first 10 vids and I’ve just started FCP trial for 90 days - it is awesome! There is a lot of stuff in there that you won’t notice initially but as you get to play with it and watch tutorials it’s awesome!! You will love it I’m sure 👌🏻

Love Final Cut Pro! I had been using iMovie and made the switch. The learning curve was huge (almost wanted to just give up!) but once I got the hang of it, I absolutely LOVE final cut!
A life saving tip for me in FCPX, is copying and pasting the attributes of a clip to other clips. For example, if I already cut clips up and then realized I wanted to bring the volume down on ALL clips, you can change one, then do command+c, and then highlight the clips you want to paste to, and to paste do command+option+v. Boom! You can even choose what attributes you want to copy/paste. You want to adjust exposure and then copy that to another clip? Yup, you can do that too! It's a game changer. Also, I see you're using a Lacie drive, which is a reputable brand, great stuff, however I'd suggest using a Samsung T5 or T7. An SSD will be much much faster than the Lacie drives. However, if it works for you than you do you!

Awesome overview! I don’t feel like I need final cut yet but it seems like the 2 biggest selling points are color correction and being able to layer tons of footage.
Final Cut Pro X is an amazing investment. Definitely a learning curve, but super fun once you learn what you're doing and shortcuts, cool tricks, etc. I love how much control I have over varius aspects of my editing.

I used iMovie for a few years and moved up to FCP last month. It is worth every penny. It’s daunting at first but the more you learn the better it is. This video is good. I have had some of the same frustrations and you pointed out great solutions.

I feel like I need to take a college course to use Final Cut Pro...lol...but little by little I am getting better at using it and I love it so much! I also wanted to say I would love it if you decided to do a series on critiquing your viewers channels and giving feedback! Seriously, I think it would be a huge hit and I would sign my channel up to be critiqued by you in a red hot minute! I think it would be a win, win, scenario and really hope you consider it!

Totally agree, the $300 is worth it, especially considering it's a one time cost and all the upgrades are free. Other NLE's, like Adobe Premiere, charge a subscription fee. Tip: Buy iTunes gift cards when the go on sale at Costco to save a couple bucks on Final Cut. $300 in itunes cards cost me $240 ($100 itunes card on sale for $80). Every little bit helps! Great video!

Another tip, don't edit from an external hard drive. It so much slower than working from the computers drive as it's limited by the connection.
Just use the external hard drive to back up your files to and then remove from your computer when needed
I edit through my hard-drive because my computer is maxed out of space with my 4k file. So far its alright.
This honestly has to be one of the best videos on beginners editing, I am going to upgrade to final cut I think soon.I would love a video on the titles and transitions and text etc.. so helpful thank you!

I think Final Cut Pro is the best editing software for how much it costs. I use Premiere, but it's literally eating away at my wallet every single month, But I feel like I'm way too invested in Premiere to switch lol.

Yes, you are right. Paying each month for PP is a huge disadvantage. That’s why I upgraded to Davinci Studio, after using a free version for a year.

I prefer adobe premiere because it's easier for my workflow.
Just recently switched to final cut pro. I used imovie, then premiere pro, and now final cut!! You were one of the people who inspired me to get it, so tysm
If youre not going pro Davinci Resolve should satisfy yr needs , plus resolve has more control over color. FCPx is good but this video hypes it too much like some hypebeast hyping up a pair of adi's.
Thanks Cathrin, I used iMovie to edit my video for a year and I believe it's time to move to the next level by using FCPX. This is very helpful and I can't wait to try things out!
I use Adobe Premiere pro, before i had Filmora.
Even with Filmora that was a paid product, nothing to do with Premiere. I'm sorry but professional editing apps like final cut and Premiere are a must.
When you understand how to use them, can't come back.

I feel like I’m getting pretty good with iMovie. People are wanting me to upgrade so that’s why I’m here to see what I’d be getting into. I can do iMovie almost in my sleep so the more complicated programs almost look like overkill for simple projects.
