I was fortunate to see Lainie in FUNNY GIRL, one afternoon. They announced that Barbra would not be appearing, and three quarters of the theatre emptied out. I had already seen Barbra in the show three times, so I decided to see Lainie. And boy what a treat it was. Her performance was difference from Barbra's but absolutely wonderful & exciting.
    I've loved her ever since.

Lainie had a marvelous career and she was in many films.... BEACHES was one. Her voice is clearly gone and she struggled with this song, but I give her credit. She did it and did her best. I love her.... Was she "prettier" than Barbra? Who cares. Barbra is now 80. Her voice is not the same either. Time passes. That is most sad to me.

Lainie Kazan had one career misfortune after another sadly and apparently made one bad decision after another. Streisand rarely missed performances in Funny Girl because she believed that after the show was a smash, and she became a star, audiences deserved to see her. Fair enough. Lainie was once a pretty good singer. Not great, but good. This is painful to listen to and sad to watch. If she's new to you and want to hear her at her best, she made many albums so try to find them.

Admirable effort! I think it’s great she’s trying, but as an accompanist I’m confused why they didn’t try a more comfortable key for her, even if it had to be in the lady bass key. Unfortunately our voices age and become more harsh. You can hear moments of her former tone quality in the lower parts. She’s a great story teller! Get you a pianist that knows what they are doing girl and you’ll be golden. She looks great!

The problem is a song like this has a big range which makes going lower more difficult. The original range is from G#3 to E5. She's doing this in Ab (at age 76) which is a minor third down from the original B so her lowest note is here F3 - she'd have to go below that. (When she recorded it in 1998 at age 58, it was in Bb.) It's said that Jule Styne wanted Streisand so that he wrote the song so that only she could sing it. P.S. I'm singing this in my Adult Ed Musical Theatre class - turning 68 next month and I transposed it to Ab too!

@@xhaxha1028 It sounds like more than an aging voice to me. She seems to be having some temporary vocal issues (from a cold, or strain, or nerves, etc.) that got worse through the song, and was just trying to power through. I seriously doubt she would have attempted this song (regardless of key) if that was her usual voice at this stage of her game. This was pretty painful, but I suspect she's still capable of delivering a much better version.

Agreed. Also, if you watch some of Kazan's performances from decades past, you can see there was some questionable technique even in her much younger years. Had that had been a bit more solid, it might have helped her navigate these later years better. But hey, at least she's a good storyteller...

Oh wow, she really was prettier than Barbra and I can see why they said she was too attractive to play Fanny Brice. I also kind of understand the frustration an understudy would have if they had been excited to go on with friends and family in the audience, then the star changed their minds and performed. Actors have ambitions and dream of being in a spotlight just for a moment or two. To be ready to go for the star takes a lot of preparation and rehearsals, and I am sure some of them want to share their craft with the world in a leading role that would showcase their talent. They all know better than anyone that they're not the "singular sensation", but it's great for them to go on once in a while.

Funny how Lainie hints at how tough Barbra was while Lainie comes across as a much tougher lady. Barbra seems tough but there is a sweetness about her, a vulnerability that is so real that a lesser performer like Lainie doesn't have. It's not to put down Lainie, almost every performer is a lesser performer than Barbra. Also, Barbra's singing is the best, natural, not affected, timeless, beautiful tone, impecable phrasing, always perfect, control and dynamics and power and it seems so easy, effortless. Those qualities can't be taught or learned. And that is why Barbra is the greatest star of them all.
