I swear, "the best version of Persona 3" is like the most difficult thing in SMT 💀
As someone who played P3 before most people ever heard of Persona or SMT, here's my advice: never play P3P first, only play it if you already played P3F or P3R. Also, merciless mode on P3R is much easier than hard mode on P3F, so if you want a challenge (without modding), stick with P3F
I've put probably 2000 hours into various P3 versions over the years and it's hard to beat Reload. Just an incredible but faithful reworking that keeps most of the feel of the original. Now that you can get it for $40-$50 new instead of $70, if you're still on the fence as a Persona or SMT fan, it's definitely worth it.
While I looooove FES, for most modern gamers, yeah reload is probably the best choice.
Is Persona 4 Golden a good first Persona game? It's by far the cheapest...
@@fakesmile172 4 Golden was my introduction so I say so!
Reload 3 is still worth it!
@@fakesmile172yup! it was my first persona game and it became one of my top 5 favorite games of all time!
@@FloofPuppy can also vouch for persona 4, it was my first. Golden has some quality of life changes over that so it's even better
very well-detailed and fair comparison of all the games. great video. i liked it. also, in an interview with the directors of persona 3 portable, it was said that the 3D environments were dropped to reduce load times. source: Persona 3 Portable official fanbook: Creators Interview.
17:34 Correction: The PS2 version only ran at 480i not 480p, but you can enable 480p on real hardware through mods
Wild I didn't catch that with how much time I spent adjusting the Retrotink
Great video! Happy to help with fact checks
New design of the channel looks fire man
You forgot how they confirmed what the Takoyaki in Octopia's made out of.
(it's dog)
Wtf, for real? I missed it in the game, where does it say that?
I know there's a dog on the Octopia logo but nooo 😭
its actualy made of
secret you know
Just for the QoL additions and extra content with male party members alone makes Reload worth it overall.
The graphics and look of Reload is obviously much higher in fidelity and quality but I do feel that the Reload lost some of its edge and atmosphere of the OG which is especially apparent during the start of the game. The Dark Hour and Makoto's awakening don't hit nearly as hard as the OG where it felt almost as visceral as Evangelion. The dorms also look quite flat especially in Makoto's room which lacks the light shafts coming from the windows.
Even with that in mind Reload does a lot more right than wrong but it is a shame that some of the original style was lost.
Thank you so much for this! Even now I’m still learning more about the mechanics of the old P3 games. Looking forward to your P4/5 videos!🙏
Extremely awesome and informative video! There’s always something new to learn about P3
great video! hopefully this helps new fans because i was confused as hell when i was new to the series
Can't stress enough how much I appreciate these videos and how much effort you put into them. Great work.
Fantastic video! Great work!
Fan for a long time, love the schnazzy new look!
If you're new to P3 I'd say start with reload, if you want more pick up FES and play the answer (since you can just boot directly into it) and if you STILL want more pick up portable (either og or remaster) and play the FeMC route.
Why would you ever bother playing and answer through FES to get a worse experience when it’s only 2 months away for reload
As an avid FES fan, PLEASE don't start FES The Answer if you only played Reload. It will be such a difficulty spike that you will legit suffer because the mechanics are so different and the difficulty overall is higher than base FES. Either start with FES from the get go or wait until Reload The Answer DLC comes out
literally opposite just emulate FES modded if possible to clean up some UI
reload is too casualized for its own good
@@marcusclark1339 reload has sold more copies than every other version of persona 3 combined. I’d say that “causualization” was definitely for its own 😊
@@TeryonTheHuman well duh, of course the game's gonna sell way more after the series becomes well known with games like Persona 5
For everyone who played a videogame before though the game ended up way too easy because of the casualisation and there are no good difficulty options to actually make it challenging
amazing work as always
I love longform videos :D. The longest video I watched was a GTA retrospective that was 9hrs long.
Welcome back indeed!
That...was a lot to take in. Very detailed report on all Persona 3 versions. Well done Austin, as always. I'll have to go through this video several times to really find out which one I'd want start with but I'm leaning toward the Xbox version of Reload since they did just give away the Season Pass to anyone who had a Gamepass subscription but then I'd miss out on modding the PC version. Dunno, like I said, need another watch.
P3R is a very good gamepass title. It's probably the best version you could play. If you want the game to be actually challenging though, consider playing on Merciless from the get go
Ah, there it is. Been waiting for this ever since P3LOAD launched.
45:52 “Catboy Dojima”
I've been waiting for this -akihiko
Great video :). Thanks for including the section regarding mods. Is FES still available on the PS3 store? (I don't own a PS4 or PS5, but I do own a PC). Guess I could just emulate FES?
It’s still available on the PS3 store. It’s $9.99.
are the logos for the consoles for femc in the thumbnail switched?
As someone who payed Persona 3 even before many people knew about the franchise or SMT, I still think P3P is by far the best version. It is the most complete and with the most replay time. I lost count on how many times in beat it in my old PSP.
Reload ftw~!
I... REALLY hope Reload's Answer DLC is more forgiving than the ps2 version...
When can we expect the vid on P4? I'm currently working through p3 reloaded, and wanna head to 4 next. I have P4 for Ps2, and Golden for vita, so just wanna know what to expect based off a vid like this. Thanks.
I really wanna experience the Tar-Tar Sauce life style. Nice video.
That was AWESOME
Are you sure they fixed all of bugs on PS3 version of P3? Cause there's a bug where the game freezes at a later full moon boss and I was stuck there for years.
Goat is back
36:50 I had no idea you could do that. How do you pull that up?
It's select/back for me.
I think Persona 3 FES is also available on PS3 as a digital only game. The only thing I remember reading from that on the megamitensei fandom website is that the port is known for corrupting the save files. So it's best to have copies on an external hard drive to be safe.
Iirc this and other bugs were patched over time, but if you want to be 100% sure, guess it won't hurt
@@Lima75 When I read that, it was long before the PS4 launched, so things could have changed now.
It's a terrible way to play. Undub + community patches on an emulator is the only way you can get anything out of it
Small correction: Persona 3 and FES actually run at 480i rather than 480p on ps2. This basically means theres less effective detail than 480p since 480i has interlacing which means the lines flicker back and forth. Also social link recasts in Japan? Am I missing something because none of the previous versions had voice acting for the social link exclusive characters right??
Some of the s.links in Japan got VAs years before since they were used in Drama CDs. They got some really big names somehow for it too (Akinari's former VA comes to mind). But all of them got recasted. But there is some that did not appear in Drama CDs getting a VA for the first time (Nozomi).
Drama CDs are awesome, give them a try.
I still don't get why they remastered Portable only to remake the original almost imediately
Most likely to make up for no FeMC in Reload
Basically a crumb for the FeMC fans I guess
I assume it was their way of having a reason to not remake femc stuff because it's right there
money, hence why remastered is such a sh*t port of the game
also why they won't bring back FES or any original version, atlus loves their low effort rereleases that break their games more
22:18 - ok how did that happen, this is almost meme-worthy
3:35 "There is also a new opening, but the secondary opening was removed."
Incorrect, because waiting in the menu for about 15 seconds would play the original opening, as a sort-of secret.
It's correct. There is a secondary opening for the original that's not present in FES. It's actually the trailer of the original. And can be modded back into FES nowadays.
czcams.com/video/T85-Obx9iE8/video.htmlfeature=shared it should look something along these lines.
Welp time to forget about irl for 45 mins and get a granular understanding of each version of P3. c;
3:37 Uh, what?
The OG opening is still in FES too.
That was not what was being referred to. An alternate opening in the Original exists, it's one of the trailers for the game at the time.
hmm, i wonder if you're gonna talk about p1 and p2, since even though it's easy to say which are the better versions, i don't think i've seen a more in depth comparrisom between the psp and ps1 versions of em
With some current rumors about persona 1 and 2 possibly getting a new remaster port in the future, they may be waiting for actual confirmation on that before covering those games.
@@ech0ashes that would make the most sense yea
P1 is the best on PSP with music restoration, P2IS is best on PS1, P2EP best on PSP.
@@lemonov3031 indeed, that's why i said it's easy to tell the best ver of each
tho tbf innocent sin is just better on ps1 cause in the psp version it's so easy you don't even have to care at the final boss
@@osdesinteligentes7946 PSP version of IS also made the battle menus very slow for no good reason, the game was slow as is
Man, I almost missed this video because of different branding.
Nice
40:01 620p on One X? Did you mean 1620p?
Play FES for the true experience. Tactics is the best and makes the game actually challenging. Just mod it with the hd overhaul project
*it is peak*
There should be a mod where everyone wears a fez
Just play Reload, seriously. Closest thing to a definitive release we'll ever get.
Played FES on PS2 before Reload came out and watched a friend play it on Steam. Wish I had just waited. It doesn't fix my issues with the story or Tartarus's dull gameplay loop, but I would have had a better experience.
nah too much changed honestly from dialogue, censorship to sanitized look to fit p5
even those bits on the father not smoking, anything remotely "offensive" removed ruins it really for broad appeal
@@marcusclark1339I'll be honest: not really. The changes in the Operation Babe Hunt and in the JP/localized dialogue aren't that deal breaking, especially when the rest of the localization was made better in Reload. I don't agree with censorship either, but you can play P3RE and be in the know simultaneously.
A case I see valid is if you prefer the original's art direction, gameplay, sound design, etc. This can objectively affect how you see the game greatly.
"4 and 5 will not be this long..." YET
Reload tbh
You will have to remake the video again after The Answer Reload comes out, you know?
If they don't release FES physically available and packed with Reload, personally I won't bother, since I already keep an unplayed FES Limited Edition on my shelf. I don't get why they don't release complete versions from the start.
I'd say it depends on the hardware you want to play P3 in:
FES - PS2/PS3
Portable - PSP/Psvita/Switch
Reload - PC/PS4/PS5/Xbox One/Xbox Series/Steam Deck
If you wanna use emulators, I'd recommend FES over Portable unless either you want to play as FEMC and/or you're playing on a cellphone.
P3P at 4K 120Hz on the XBSX feels really nice to play.
I would probably prefer reload but i just really dislike what they did to the music. before i even played persona 3 on ps2 i was obsessed with the ost like the original when moons reaching out stars. it was basically the centerpiece of my enjoyment of it so its enough to be a true dealbreaker for me checking reload out
Just play FES
God, it just makes me so frustrated that they put all the work and love and effort into making such a great remake in P3R only to still not have a definitive definitive edition because they didn't go the extra 20-30% to put in the FMC content. Especially since I'd argue that was one of the biggest reasons why people wanted a remake... people weren't going crazy for a P3 remake just because they wanted the game to look and feel fresh, there was (and still is) an actual problem with the content being split across different games and this was probably the one shot to rectify that. It's a bummer to have all the fun stuff in her route sidelined like that.
And not to sound entitled, but I think when they're charging $105 for the game + DLC compared to FES which came out at $30 15 years ago, the extra 20-30% isn't a crazy ask.
Great vid as always though, I'll be ready for the third P3 comparison in a couple months when the Answer drops lolol, and maybe a fourth if they put it on Switch 2 and throw some more double dip changes at us.
The female main character isn’t canon and they almost never treat her as canon so putting in her content would have been a waste of time. None of the movies are about her, none of the spin off games besides dancing ever treat her as having existed and almost every time they cross makoto over with another protagonist as late as even persona 5 royal, it’s always male makoto.
She was always supposed to be just a throw away thing to make up the fact that portable had to scale back almost everything else so I have zero idea why some people had it in their head that they were gonna essentially make the remake twice just for a character that is almost never treated as canon
@@TeryonTheHumanFeMC has new SLs for the main cast that are distinct from what you’ll find in reload. That alone makes her route worthwhile.
Also, she’s not in dancing, that’s a mod. She is in Q2 where we learn that she is from an alternate timeline. The Q games are as canon as the other spinoffs.
I’m starting to question if you’ve even played these games…
@@TeryonTheHuman Well one, Persona "canon" is pretty loosey goosey in general so idk if you can ever definitively act like certain details or characters are canon. Theodore was introduced and is only available in her route but he seems like a pretty "canon" character at this point. And she's been in Q2; was featured as one of the protagonists in 25th FES; and has been in various iterations of the stage play, audio dramas, and manga. They clearly recognize her as a real character in the series, not just a complete one off. Hell, she's probably more "relevant" currently than anybody from P1 and P2 when it comes to being featured in modern content, are you going to argue that the first two games aren't canon either.
And, more importantly, who even cares about canon lol, canon just doesn't really matter. Saying she's "not canon" is a nonsense reason to not include her because Atlus controls the canon and can change it whenever they want for whatever reason they want.
I care more about the actual merit of adding her as a character and I think for that there's plenty. There's only two female protags in the series so that's always been one of the big draws for her. She's not just a reskin of Makoto, she has a pretty different personality, and a bunch of different links that are frankly almost all better than Makoto's equivalents. Especially the ones fleshing out links with the main cast which give us more details and insight than what you got on the normal male route; I feel like the people who call her a throwaway are almost overwhelmingly people who haven't actually played her route. And even if she was just a novelty, she's clearly a very well liked novelty by the fanbase so what's wrong with catering to that.
We all know it just comes down to not wanting to spend the money and time on something that they didn't think would give enough financial return, especially when it would require extra voice actors and animation just for her. And I think that's a shame. P3R is a great celebration of the legacy of P3 but I don't think any celebration of P3 is truly complete without her as well. And again, when they're charging $105 for essentially a bespoke version of FES I think it's warranted to ask for a bit more. Like it would've been really cool to have a version of the Answer with Kotone as well, that could've been a cool draw and an actual "new content" inclusion that they could advertise. But instead it ends up being a nice but mostly optional version of P3 for those who have experienced the story multiple times already.
not really love just casualization of design
from sanitzation of the content to censorship of things
its just a more "power fantasy" version that breaks itself than willing to challenge the player
I won't be surprised if atlus released a "definitive" version of p3 reload just to grab more cash from fans.
After The Answer releases in September there's basically no reason to play P3FES anymore. No FeMC is a bummer but other than that Reload should be what any newcomer to Persona 3 or even just the series in general should play. It doesn't entirely rectify issues the game always had like the inconsistent pacing of the story or the mixed bag of Social Links but it does address a lot of plotting problems I originally had, especially Strega's minimal presence and getting some form of deeper interactions with the male party members outside event stuff. And the gameplay is basically all the best things about Persona 3's successors just put back into P3. It's great.
I wouldn’t say *no* reason because the ps2 versions still offer a unique gameplay experience with mechanics that no other persona game (including reload) have.
I still recommend reload for a newcomer, but FES is still a worthwhile experience.
plenty of reason
better VA, music, scene cinematography, not censored or sanitzed content
the problem of new is its just broad appeal game where everything is rewarded and nothing is punished
"There's basically no reason to play P3FES"
Except Is a better game and the TRUE Persona 3 Lol
Is there a version where male mc can date Akihiko?
No, not without any possible modding
I'm sorry, but the way you pronounce Kotone is aggravating me.
Dude talks too fast but the content is top notch.
Correction: FES didn't remove the secondary opening. You just have to wait for a bit on the title screen.
Edit: I'm wrong.
There's a secondary opening for the original version that's not present in FES. That was what is being referred to. There's a mod to bring it back, actually.
@@bothdoorscares3878 wait what
Fes is still the definitive version imo, reload is brain dead easy and a lot of the scenes just aren’t as good as the original
JFC! Stop talking about mods! That has no place in this conversation! Get that through your head already! Make a separate video about mods if you wanna talk about them!
More than likely it's mentioned in anticipation of comments mentioning it, so it's added in already to accommodate that.
@@raphaelcoprada4637 They're an idiotic minority who we should not be pandering to. If you need to mod a game to fix it, then you aren't actually judging the game. It wholly goes against the premise of these videos which is "which version of the game should you play?". When you let modding infect the conversation, the ultimate answer to the question is "it doesn't fucking matter, just mod it". This whole bit is so fucking braindead.
Chill. There's a reason they're at the very end of the video & last less than 2 minutes. Your feedback has been noted regardless.
@@AustinSV I didn't mind the mods section at all! I just beat the game today and it's cool to know that there's already fan made stuff out there. And I like it when you mention mods in these comparison videos. The mods sometimes provide fixes that the devs don't bother with so it's really beneficial to know. Thanks for the updated Persona 3 comparison video! It was a good watch.
@@dubb Mods literally defeat the purpose of these kinds of videos. Knock that off.
answer: still FES
most complete version, truest to it, no censorship or sanitization of content, no ulterior agenda push inside it, better VA, truer combat not toned down, better music, MASS DESTRUCTION and moddable
REloaded seems better but its terrible from sanitzed cutscenes, overly clean i.e. trying to be p5 when p5 isn't the next biggest thing (now its Refantazio), cutting out content for the sake of broad appeal (stamina, reload links quicker saves, etc) cutting out characters cause agenda or just localization for the same reason
it doesn't work cause its broad appeal and loses the point of why those things were there to begin with
woes to P3 best way is still the original and Atlus keeps doing this when the original is often better but they never release when they aren't interchangeable
P3FES aged badly
@@YoungSigmaGrindset how? because it uses tactics? that was an intentional choice made by the devs which fit the themes of the game, not a hardware limitation of the time. also, if the tactics system works a lot better in the ps2 game than the one in reload - a game for the ps5, it didn't age badly!
Another garbage remake. It's now way too easy, it's always like this with remake, so many QOL improvement they removed the difficulty and challenge as a quality of life improvement. Also a graphical nextgen remake that couldn't even get the mood and lightning or fight arena details better than on a literal Playstation 2.
