- 2019 FXDR 114 was first spotted at the dealer show, but now I get to ride it, and talk about it, and film it, and post it, and... Harley Davidson is definitely thinking outside the box with the newest, lightest, big performer out of Milwaukee. This is my fist impression of the bike, and I hope to ride it more soon!

Alright John, I took one for a test ride. The forward controls coupled with the low/far handlebars are a little much. I felt like my neck was at a weird angle. The torque was spot on quick. Now granted I' m coming from a stage IV Road King (2018). I like the looks of the thing, but DO NOT LIKE THE BREATHER! It handles really really well for the 240 back tire. That's the one thing that blew me away. Before the test ride I told a guy they would have to prove it to me that a 240 back tire could have good handling and they did!! All in all nice bike for short rides and fun to ride. It would not be for longer rides though maybe an hour tops. Thanks for the great videos John!!

Rode it yesterday, I was uncomfortable in the first 20 feet. It’s fast, it corners. The breather kicks your right leg out, my elbows and knees were almost touching. 10 min into the ride I was wondering how long I could ride it until I was done.
Ducati proved that a 240 rear tire can still handle. The Diavel would run away from this in the twisties and at the drag strip. It looks cool but it lacks the performance of other bikes in its class.
I bought one last Friday. Did 100 miles this weekend. Went back to the dealer and adjusted the clip-on back about 1", and fixes the seating position immensely. This bike drops into turns without effort, and the 114 is a hoot!
I test drove the fxdr on Friday. I'm a beginner rider still on my first bike, 16 Kawasaki Versys 650 ABS. This was the FIRST TIME I've ridden a HD. Things that stand out, vibrations from the handle bars, not used to it. Forward controls, had trouble with them at first. Engine heat when stopped, damn hot. My first big throttle pull I had to hang on for dear life. Not used to that torque and power. I got used to it and feel I'm love with it. It doesn't handle liked the Versys but was still impressed. Overall I really enjoyed the experience and will consider this as a future purchase. It fixed all the stereotypes I had about HD bikes. Shout out to McGrath's HD in Dubuque, IA.
John, I find your channel to be at the top of my list. It's not surprising to see how fast your channel is growing. It is a top notch channel, very entertaining with great personality, charisma, and entertainment value to pair up with all the information you share too! Keep up the awesome work. There is a good chance your channel may convince me to leave the metric world and get my first Harley!

My dad and I took one for a test ride -@ seperate times- here in Houston, TX at Republic H-D. It does handle a lot different, and it does have a lot of power. Im not too much of a fan of the looks about it, but i do love it's attitude. Also, wanted to let you know that I am greatly appreciative of all of your informative videos and have probably watched them all at this point and have only been following you for a couple of months. Keep on keepin' on and keep the videos coming, brother! Be safe!
Also, the forward controls are awesome for me seeing as I'm 6'5", and am looking forward to putting them on my Dyna Fat Bob very soon.

Mine's broken in, has around 1300 miles on it. It's in the shop until spring getting a stage 2 kit with a zippers 468 redshift cam, pushrods, blacked out pushrod covers, and a 2 brothers racing exhaust. It has a dynojet power vision on it, and I've taken the fender off of it already. (but got covered in mud and rain soon after)
The riding position has been comfortable to me. I also have a 2009 FXDF with 50,000 miles on it, and when I climb on that after riding the fxdr I feel like I'm on an old Harley with apes, because the FXDR sits higher. there doesn't feel like any nimbleness is lost between the two, and that maybe the FXDR is a little more nimble. I can take clover leafs faster and with more confidence than with the FXDF, and have been known to scrape pipes, pegs, and primary cases on it.
As for the breather, it didn't bother me any more than the heavy breather does, and it's a signature feature of the bike.
I've taken it out for more than a few hours at a time and absolutely love it.
In short; after 5 months and 1,300 miles from October until January, I love everything about this monster, and cant wait to see it with the new cam and exhaust!
Yea, crazy...you have to have your new bike ripped into and re-done to get any sort of horsepower.

That's a really nice bike,I'll have to try it out when I have a chance, not really crazy about the looks of the handle bars or the top of the tank, but that's just cosmetic and can be changed,but what I'm really writing for is to say thanks for what you're doing and to say that you probably don't remember me but about a month or so ago I asked for help with dead short in my bike and you suggested that it could be a bad ignition switch but not to change until I was sure,I decided to take a chance and change it and it turns out that that is what the problem was all along,so,thanks again John for the videos and the other things you do that people don't even know about.

That is an awesome new platform for us in California! We love ripping around the canyons here! Imagine with a great Ohlins Suspension, huge brakes, and a 128" with a .550 cam! Brings a little bit of the sportbike days to the now Harley days. Love it, but I already purchased the 2019 Road glide and still playing and loving it :)

Exactly! I really thought this bike would stay in the low teens at least. For that, may as well get a touring bike.
I was thinking the *same* thing. For low 21k's I'd be hard pressed to get less stuff for the same money.
But maybe this is marketed directly at those folks wanting Dyna/V-Rod styling and performance without all the extra Bagger amenities.

Two years too late but I’ve been looking at this bike recently. Cutting have a Vulcan S as my first bike. I’ve grown to appreciate the naked feel which is why I’m looking the FXDR. I noticed they now offer stages which I’m certainly interested in. I thought you gave a good break down and I really liked the openness of your views.

A lot of comments mention this was supposed to be for younger riders. I think it is for younger riders, but not new riders. I think this targets a similar market as the V-Rod. Someone who wants the low slung power bike, but maybe a little more, practical? I prefer the older styled Harley’s, and their Bagger lineup, but I love that Harley is targeting a missed demographic of people in their late 20s who want something less than a sport bike, but not quite a traditional Harley. I approve. I hope they keep going with their new stuff and old stuff approach. Something for every rider.

Hey John welcome back! I was driving around on a 2018 FXLR just got the 1000 mile service, and was getting ready to add a stage 1/2 kit. My daughter bought her first motorcycle a 2018 48 and got into a conversation with the salesman ( Damn Him All to HELL) about the FXDR and asked him to call me when one came in, I wasn't really thinking about buying one, following you and Matt Laidlaw out in Cali at the dealer show and watching that clip of it on Harley's web site ... With the Oh that's different kinda attitude.
A few days later one came in and reluctantly came in to take a look. I was happy with my low rider. Right! It was kinda like that lighting bolt out of the blue. Pictures didn't do it justice BTW. It wasn't my Bag Baby ( Austin Powers). We locked eyes (not really) I mean it should have come with it's own "stripper" pole. I Bought it, didn't even test drive it, barely turned around to say goodbye to my Low Rider, it happened so fast I was so ashamed. I enjoyed the look and the feel, power is good (for now), it's a great around town bike opening the throttle will put a grin on your face , cornering is very good. though I haven't dragged the pegs yet. She's not for everyone and I wouldn't take her home to meet the parents yet. Every time I get on her she takes to that "special" place.... Whoa, I 'm drifting sorry. It will never be a bagger and with the current offering for a wind screen $444 bucks YIKES , you'll be fighting the wind. I would like to ride it like a cafe racer with my feet on some pegs on the rear so I could stretch out . and enjoy the top end on the longer ride. People love her, people hate her.
I'd like to thank Alan Burns of Harley World Oklahoma City for ruining my former "Low Rider Marriage " and for being the first owner of the FXDR in the State. I think they (Harley Davidson) are on to something.
Ducati Diavel, about 20 thousand and 150 hp. Time for Harley to step up to the plate!

Thanks for sharing. It will be interesting to see how they sell. I like to see Harley expanding their brand to other types but very disappointed they couldn't get the price point a little more reasonable. Only time will tell.
Seriously think of getting one. The Diavel (Ducati ) is in the 20's, Triumph is in that area, i am sold on this FXDR style, engine, perf, etc. Its 24,500 USD here in the Philippines but delivery, tax, etc, its ok. Never had a Harley but this FXDR overall sold me ! Your videos have helped me a lot decide if i should get it or not. I am 72 this April so a Bday gift to myself been ridi g since i was 12. Visited your showroom last week and this bike is still on the floor. First FXDR I've seen in person. The first thing that struck me was the breather......that's one big snorkel. The rear fender/ tail light section looked sort of out of place.....may need some getting used to...salesman said fender eliminator kit may be available via aftermarket but then.....you do need some type of fender to keep the tire from throwing road junk. You really need to see this bike in person to make any judgements. Like any other bike, it will fit some folks but not everyone. I did not throw my leg over the saddle and give it a sit.....various buckles, snaps, zippers etc. on my riding gear made me stay off. There was some talk from the sales guy about the wide rear tire...handleing...wear...cost. Though your test ride was brief, good job on the review.
Suzuki M109r’s are selling for $10500 on sale this fall! This is the model that is faster, cheaper, better looking, and already has a loyal following among the youth! HD needs to bring back the Dyna with better suspension and dual brakes up front. 20K for an ugly put put? I love your new bike, Heritage!!!!!
First, thanks for the video. I got a chance to ride one over the weekend at a demo truck event. I was surprised; it was a lot better than I thought it'd be. I assumed Harley's promo marketing was basically BS, and it would feel essentially the same as every other new Softail. However it surprised me quite a bit, it felt considerably lighter and very tight. It transitioned direction very quickly; almost twitchy like a way smaller bike. It almost reminded me of riding a Street. That might be partially due to the seating position, which was definitely very ambitious. You lean into it pretty far with the clip-on bars, but also your feet are really stretched out. In the 25 minute test ride, I found myself getting into that stance and beginning to enjoy it. But mid controls might still be a better idea. Immediately after I rode it, I did the same demo ride on a Fat Bob, and hands down the FXDR felt lighter. However the full spectrum of maneuverability is probably similar between the two. Also immediately obvious; you sit further forward on a Fat Bob; there's way less bike in front of you. And the forward controls in the Fat Bob felt like mids, after just getting off the FXDR. Again, switching to mid-controls might be a good mod for the FXDR. If I bought one, I'd make that change, and also throw away the stock exhaust, replacing it with a quality lightweight 2-into-1 pipe, like a stainless Bassani Road Rage III. That would make the bike even lighter. I'd probably also ditch the stock airbox, in favor of something less ugly and better performing. I'd keep the clip-on bars. I like them a lot. Overall I genuinely enjoyed the bike much more than I expected. I actually came into the demo ride looking for reasons to dismiss the FXDR as a gimmick, because I was building a case to buy a Fat Bob. But like I said here, the FXDR showed some pretty impressive qualities. I think you pointed out probably its worst trait; the price. It's definitely high. But the FXDR is a cool bike. I'm considering it. And I'm very glad Harley's making it. Once again, thanks for the awesome video, and everything you do.

I like it. Harley needs this new look. I'm really sick of people thinking all bikers are the same. The bigger issue is how Harley sales people present the brand. Every time I go into a Harley and look at bikes. Something is always mentioned about drinking and riding. The last time was the worse when he told us to put ice and beer in the bags with the easy open latches so we could drink while we were riding down the road. I love the whole biker lifestyle but at the same time it needs to change in some ways to keep it alive and relevant. Love the video John keep it up.
I don't own a Harley but I totally agree with what you said. The "biker image" needs a major overhaul.

I’ve never heard anyone at the two Harley dealerships in my California city talk about drinking or alcohol in general as a selling points to buying a Harley Davidson motorcycle. If I did, I agree with you that it would be an obvious disappointment. I disagree with you about the biker image, without the traditional biker image Harley would have never recovered from the AMF days, and would not be surviving today. Harley Davidson has failed with their marketing, and continues to miss opportunities in the television, movie, music, video game, sports, alcohol, tobacco, and toy industry. All of which is needed to imbed Harley into young minds so they crave one as soon as they can get their motorcycle license. Harley is pricing themselves out of business! When a CVO cost as much as a brand new Chevy, Ford, or Dodge fully loaded 4 x 4 pick-up, it makes no sense! I’m 54, most of my friends ride but they don’t buy new Harley’s. They by used or salvaged and fix them.
Cool looking bike. Not my cup of tea. 30 years ago I would have been all over it, but 30 years ago, there would have been no way I could have afforded that. Just glad to see Harley is trying to diversify. Keep up the great videos John.

I like the look of the FXDR and I am looking forward to my dealers demo days in a few weeks to try it out. To be realistic it isn’t a bike I would purchase because I can’t see myself dropping $21,000 for a bike to run around town. I don’t see how you can add a sissy bar or bags to take it on the road. I had my bike loaded down last month with a tent, sleeping bag and backpack all strapped to my sissy bar on my Slim for a 450 mile ride to Sturgis and don’t see how that would be possible on an FXDR. I don’t own a trailer for my bike and I sure as shit am not looking to buy one with a $21,000 bike so I can trailer my bike around on long trips. Great video as always John!
Thank you for the review John, excellent as usual. The price point will be the most significant issue that limits the sale of the 2019 FXDR 114. It’s not for me, I will stick to the Street Glide and Road Glide series. I ride most days to work, but also enjoy riding throughout the U.S. making 7-8 trips (adventures) each year.

I noticed that funky front brake line right off; how did they not notice that? Definitely looks like a fun around town short trip bike (not the 300-500 mile/day bike I prefer). That price...yea, seems a bit much; I guess time will tell.
I agree about the price point, it looks great. Then I start to think/realize that, "where is the ability to travel, 4.4 gallon tank but no place for saddles or sissy bar?" I have a 107 Fat Bob and fell I have what I need, except that 4.4 gallon would be nice or the original 5 gallon. Anyways, thanks for the preview John. Keep'em coming...

Totally agree on the bars and price. My first impression sitting on it was there was no way I could comfortably ride it. The forward controls plus low bars bent me in a V with my right leg thrown out by the air intake. Hands off the bars it felt good. Hate to pay $22k and have to buy bars. I’m sure there’s a market for it, I just hope for the MoCo that they didn’t price it out of that market’s reach.
Great video, interesting bike. I don't like the posture, Id have to change out the bars. Happy that Harley are moving in different directions as well as keeping traditional looking bikes like the FLHCS. Totally off-topic question; have Harley updated the RoadKing/RoadKing Special with LED lights or a USB socket like the other M8 models?
Thanks John. Never been a fan of this style machine. The thing that jumped out for me is the manhole sized fuel filler\mount... seems huge. The MoCo needs to come in with a fast revving high hp twin, at a reasonable price point to attract that market share everybody is talking about. I think the guy who buys this machine already has a Roadglide or streetglide for real riding. I will give the new adventure a fair shake when it comes out, but for now I’ll stick with what I have. Thanks for the review! Its closest competition is the Ducati Diavel, many comparisons were made between the Fat Bob and the Diavel but I think this is a closer match.
Totally agree except you cant compare water cooled to air cooled. Thats the only thing that will never jive. Higher HP can only be achieved with higher compression or higher displacement size (among other things like cams, # of cylinders and design). The latter would cause more heat which the air cooled engine would not be able to keep under control. For example see the Honda CB1100. Its an1100 cc, 4 cylinder, over head cam engine Japanese bike that should be a rocket but it it only has 88-89 HP because its air cooled.
@@ohthedude Agree regarding outright performance and the limitations of air cooling. When I say competition I mean for sales, there is no doubt that the Ducati will trounce the FXDR in any performance metric. I seriously considered both an XDiavel and the 2018 Fat Bob when bike shopping last year. I liked the idea of the Diavel performance, but at the end of the day chose the Harley for non performance aspects. I preferred the appearance, relatively simple maintenance and local dealer support of the Harley. Both are bad ass bikes!

im a old fart and have been riding for 50 years or so. i currently own 2011 road king, and love it. but i dont see a very bright future for my Harley Davidson motorcycle company. but they've been in dark places before and came thru it tougher and swing a big chain. i pray that this is just one more hard curve to get around. as for this new member of my family well . . . strike one.
Think your right John, I think we can expect a split in Harley’s rider range, the FXDR is heading for the sport bike alternative attracting new customers from a different generation, but hopefully Harley will still be riding along with their heritage such as the FLHCS , Street Bob etc to keep the faithful generation purchasing new bikes. It appears they may be starting to follows business models such as Honda, Yamaha etc. All Good 👍🏻.
My back at hip is sooooo out of the park with the FXDR. I like my Heritage 114. It's got potential but like everybody seems to agree is the price point. Thanks for the vid.
This just seems like an updated Rocker C. I hope they use the ideas they put into the front forks and tire size to improve upon the Breakout handling. Plus I can see a lot of the technology they used on this to improve many other bikes as well.
Road it at Demo day. It was fun but I ride a Night Train with stock drag bars and it was even further than i want to lean. Also, didn't feel inspiring in slow corners. However, it felt awesome doing what it's best at, ripping in a straight line.
For 2019, I was hoping for a 114 for the Street Bob....a bare bones stripped down bike with a bunch of motor. Based on your video you seem to not know what to think of the FXDR, where or how it fits in to the Harley line but I agree......Harley is making some changes and the company needs to attract other riders to the brand. It's not for me but I hope the bike is a success

I reached for the brakes on my laptop when I saw that truck over in your lane, passing the mail truck. Still freaks me out to watch someone else riding via GoPro. Not the bike for me, but thanks for the intel on it. (I was looking at the same bike this afternoon at Chunky River H-D in Meridian, Mississippi. It's a bit more impressive when you see it for yourself.)
Price point is what Harley needs to work on. With prices like these I will stick to the used market or recently I’ve been looking at triumph for my new bike. Good video as always

Thanks for a honest opinion. or first impression. I really like the looks of the bike as it sets. I think setting it up for yourself will help but I can not see changing the seat, it has a look that is unique and driven for the future. I think it is a bit expensive for the model, should be under 20 gs. I plan on riding one as soon as my local dealer has a demo day. My only catch you mentioned was he heat from the rear cylinder, have noticed that on the 18 Breakout, made the ride a bit uncomfortable. This is not a bike for the average HD rider, it is one for someone wanting a more modern approach to the American V Twin. I hope it sells well.

I like the rear fender a lot. The back part of the seat is what puts me off a little. The rest of the bike totally awesome including the clip on handle bars. The price, well tell me what Harley-Davidson isn’t over priced.
I realize that me and the guy that approved the rear fender design are the only ones that like it, that’s to bad because it’s thinking outside the Harley-Davidson box a little.

John, talking HD handlebars on new bike, looks like they are adjustable, if they are it was be real boon over non adj standard bars? See if they are adj, an if so what kind of travel for different rider an rider style! That would be cool, adjustable bars! Tim P.s. all HD should be totally equipped with all LED!
The stuff on the tires that you mention is actually the release agent that they spray on the molds during manufacturing.
No kidding. Good info!
Just to add to that...while scrubbing the tires in to get rid of the agent is very important, getting the tires up to operating temperature and keeping it there for about 100 miles is even more so important. The heat disperses the release agent more effectively than just scrubbing the tires.
Neat looking bike, aside from the last minute fender out back, but thats an easy fix.
I saw one on Harley Demo Day. Did not get a chance to try it. Long waiting list. Forgot to mention the removable panel behind the seat. Could be used for small storage. Or a 2 up seat.
The FXDR looks like a cross between a sport bike and a cruiser. I think the timing of it's release is Harley's hybrid transition from the old, to the new styles of bikes that are coming out in 2020.

Wow there is a lot of opinions on this. I ride a Road Glide, I love the touring bikes. I am a bagger guy....that being said the motor company needs to attract new riders. A lot of The new younger riders coming up want different things and a different look. So bravo to the motor company for introducing some new rides. I would love to test ride this type of bike...I mean why not, its cool, its a Harley and its a motorcycle! I believe that in order for the motor company to make the bikes I love to ride touring bikes...they have to attract new riders by introducing new models. That's for the video John!!
It is a solid choice for naked bike and performance riders. I also would want more infro on why so high a price vs competition. Maybe make up some research money?

Took one out and it was good except for those bars. Just too hunched forward for my tastes. Very responsive throttle impressed me. I'll keep my Victory Hammer for a bit but HD has my attention I really like the way they've been going lately. If they ever make a CVO breakout based on the new softail it's a done deal for me.

The motor company could have done a few things different if they wanted to attract New Riders from other markets. One you already touched on was the price point, little steep. Two,a mid controls option would definitely help as forward controls are going to be a large turn off from people coming from either sport bikes or other high performance scoots.
This bike would have been a slam dunk with the V rods engine in it. though just saying.
That air cleaner kills it for me though looks like it belongs on the side of a lawn mower LOL

Hey John, bike seems like a good comparison to a Yamaha Raider. Raider is 113 C.I. and most of us go with a 240 rear over the 210 stock. Raider obviously is more towards the "chopper" style, but it would be a good comparison
For power cruisers of the same(ish) size, we got the m109r BOSS at 16k, the valkryie at 18k, and the star raider at 16k, vrod/nightrod at 18k. So yeah the fxdr is kinda a bit pricey when you compare it to the other models of nearish specs
Rode one and liked it overall, not for people under 6' as the huge muffler will burn your leg when stopped. Im 5' 7". More HP would have been nicer to have, and the price needs to be lower when compared to the competition like the Diavel. I preferred riding the discontinued VRod. Ride safe.

FXDR... Looked it over at the local Dealer. Without knowing the price point, the plastic fenders made me cringe. Though I'm a bagger man, it has it's market.
I'm sure the pose at 01:38 is meant to relate to a lot of your followers. I stand there with my manual and stare at my bike for hours.
Brand new tires have a release wax built into the formula, usually stearic acid, to help them process and release from molds.

Hey John I have a 10 fxdb with short shots and a hypercharger. I had a v&h fuel pack that took a shit on me. What tuner would you suggest.
you know john if you would loosen up those clip-ons and pull them back where they still clear the tank by about a half an inch lock to lock you'll be setting in the "sweet" spot where you can get down into the corners and play with "ricky racer" and literally lead him into the "marbles" while you exit the turn and he cant
Love the looks of it well exept the rear fender ,but its crazy expensive here in Finland 34000€ so cant afford it bummer !

I like the look of the FXDR, but I'm holding out for the new Streetfighter. That's going to be my next Harley.
With so many beat down and broke up body parts, not sure I could even ride the FXDR. Maybe with a bar change and mid controls. It sure looks like it would be fun up here in my back yard full of curves and twisties, but would have to be a second bike for me. That is a pretty steep price point for a second bike though. Would still love to play in the curves with one.

You should make a video that describes what make a street glide different from a road glide. All the bikes and what makes them different.
I appreciate your videos which are honest and not a blatant sales pitch for Harley. Gas tank has thin walls? How can you tell? Does it oil can? And one more thing...Yes it can be customized- as can anything else on the road. That being said, in my opinion if you are paying THAT much, you should get exactly what you want, not count on dumping another 4-5 thousand into the thing. Just my opinion.
If it was a BMW or Ducati it would cost more...if it was a Triumph it would cost less. As for me, it's not in my wheelhouse, but I am glad the moco is giving the world more choices, and also stretching the bounds of believability in terms of what you can do with a softail and a beefy air cooled V twin.
