- This is a short video showing how to modify a Sony Action Cam housing to use an external Microphone.
If you don't use the waterproof housing you can't really attach the Cam to anything if your going to use it in anything other than perfect weather/conditions, and who wants perfect weather ? Super models maybe. Mmmmmm models !
While this isn't waterproof, it's better than nothing and certainly usable for what I want to use it for. Which is a lot of filming of my fellow human beings and Zombie attacks if that happens tomorrow.

How to video presentations don't get better than this. A top notch 5 star production.
+Rodney Ellis That's very kind of you to say ! thanks mate :)
This cam seems to be so good after the reviews I've seen, and this mod actually makes the cam usable in situations where the gopro is not. Thanks for this!
Nice job man! the best i found on youtube...
to stop the fogging problem, i drilled two little holes on the botton of the case... the resoult is fantastic!
thanks man!
Excellent solution. Best video I’ve seen for this. Well done.
Ah thank you. I wish I was motivated to make more video's to help people. Glad that I could help you in some way. 👍😀
Impressive video work... Clearly explained and not one spoken word. Excellent.
Fantastic video! That's a really clean setup, too. I've got a brand new AS200V and I'm a little surprised SONY doesn't offer a solution for actually using their external mic yet. Even your simple helmet mount is better than what SONY offers. excellent camera, though, so I think it's worth the small amount of frustration.
WOW, Great Video, this is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks man!
Very good job! Nice and clean work with seemingly great results.
Thanks. It works really well. Soon I'll post the other mod I've done to stop fogging permanently. (Drilling holes).
I just got an AS30. I will be doing this mod. Thanks a bunch for a great video!
Your welcome :)
Power Addicts - Jeep, car and motorcycle tips Just an FYI, the new cases are a little different. I just got an AS-30 a couple months ago and, while I haven't tried this mod myself, it seems to me that the hole will interfere with the locking mechanism on the newer cases.... But maybe I'm wrong!
I looked at mine a little closer and I believe you are correct. I wanna get another case to try modding in case I totally mess it up.
My pleasure. The Sony rocks, I'm super happy with mine will be getting a second one soon !
Awesome video and great mod for the sony! hope to see some vlogs from you soon :)
Excellent workaround idea.. I may have to try it on a spare case.
Cool thanks for the heads up.
I still like the original housing because it's more resistant to, less than favourable conditions.
great video, very professional
Thanks for the kind words. I'm happy to share ideas if they help others. The Sony isn't perfect but it does the job nicely, and is still the best at low light video recording on the market.
I've had similar setup on my old Hero2. Now I have Sony to replace it and your video will come in handy.
Thanks!
awesome vid and and additional clever move with the SORB-IT! thanks for this =D
Nice Idea, you can have an extra case still, for diving! Congrats!
Genius! Why can't Sony come up with something as simple as this!
Ian Davies ut then it would not be splashproof thats what they want but yeah like they could make an other case With this microphone plug thingy its really nice
Would this camera work with both its own internal microphone and the one you just connected (recording from both sources at the same time)? How to do that?
Very nice video, well put together. You helped me a bunch. Thanks!
Your welcome :) !
Nice mod, thanks!
Genius, my attempt was the hard way with the cable coming in from the back and a custom modified plug, with it having to bend and flex as the camera slides in and out i'm always repairing the thing.
I will be doing it your way, and earbuds are on a well known auction site with a plug very close to that for about £1 from a UK supplier, nice and cheap.
Hello, so, i'd like to buy a microphone with this plug p2. Cause it's short, and made to measure to this case... Do you have a link where i can buy one like that? I'd appreciate so much. Nice video!
Awesome tutorial man!
SidecarBandit Hey thanks :) glad to help.
No worries, happy to be of assistance ;)
Link or what to look up to find the microphone?
if I got it right, there is 3 different casings for this camera.
only difference is the clamp.
Is yours the SPK-AS1?
+YoureNowOnTV I could not find a microphone mini-jack. Please help you be?
Glad I could contribute, cheers !
It would be nice to know where you got such a short 3.5mm jack. I have looked all over.
i couldn´t find any mic with the p2 plastic cover that small. :( Wich one did you use?
I fill this days with iPhone, filmic and moviepro app in Lifeproof case were I made with glue an small wide angle lens. I search indeed also for very small water resist wide angle lens that I can attach with loctite or other perhaps what I learn today: 3M dual... Or something equal. Thanks
В следующих моделях есть конструктивные улучшения.Но с микрофоном это лучшее решение. Браво автору идеи! 100%
Great video
Duuuuude! Never thought I'd find one of your videos by chance! lol
It's a small World 👍🤪
Great Video Many thanks. I use Sony AS15 as a Helmet Cam for Journalism and this may be a better option for sound. At the moment I drilled two holes in the front of the Case directly opposite to the mic outlets. Once again great video.
Could you use some rubber to cover around the hole to make it waterproof?
Could you write where did you buy this mic?
nice job bro
Hi
which is kind of a microphone cable? Model or name? Where did you buy it? The plug head is not thick. that's nice.
That's brilliant!
Very cool video. I was wondering what to do and didn't even think of that. Thanks
Gotta love the internet for ideas ! :)
Awesome video, do you know if the camera itself without the case is durable? Such as if I use it without the case in airsoft, or biking?
I wonder if this fix is possible with the new, smaller case that comes with the AS 30 too! O.o
hey i know this is a stupid question, because im pretty sure it is in the video but im trying to find a mic for when i buy this camera later this week, whats the size of the jack
It's a pity there's still no case to suit this, I use my camera in a car for motorsport recording and it's crap not having a mic, all I get is wind noise.
The mic placement within the helmet is this so you can make commentary while you ride or is it more to catch the sound of the bike with no wind noise?
Great modification dude and thanks for sharing with us. it's too bad the big companies aren't doing anything to cater to the Moto vlogger. the Sony option is tempting but even with the microphone modification you can't charge while riding. I will stick to my $87 Chinese SVC 200 for now. Sony should use this camera as a model.
+smilehimself It's possible to run the Sony of an external battery pack but it's a pain to cut the case up for it. I've connected mine with an external power tank for mobile phone and thought about connecting to a long USB cord so I could put it in my jacket while riding. I'll have to give it a run one day :)
awesome mod. i only noticed one issue.. it sounds very low when i plug in my headphones and try to record my audio. i read the manual and it said something about the battery. so i bought the other battery pack. any suggestions?
ha. that's awesome. nice little dyi.
I am defiantly going to do this mod for my helmet, but how is the audio from the built in mic while in the case? Is there a similar mod you could do to fix that?
Like if I wanted to mount it on the bottom of a wake board, and I want the audio to be clear.
This is a great vid (Y).
Is there a really good mic that anyone would recommend?
also 1m cable should be long enough to go form the cam to the inside of the helmet? I can't imagine you would need anymore.
If you want to make it Water tight, just glue a little O-ring whit crazy-glue gel, I prefer locktite 404 that is especially for O-ring, you just put a very little bit on the contour of your hole and put the O-ring on the outside of the jack, plug it into you device and role it gently to the case, be careful to not glue all together and your done, but real great work!!
I am going to buy one just right now and do your mod whit my trick and hope to enjoy it for long time riding in the wood.
Where are you plugging headphones into ?
Thank you!
What size screwdriver is that?I am having issues trying to find one small enough.Size one or zero phillips?
im buying this camera to vlog with, and im planning on doing this mod, but where can i find this mic
Well, the sound inside the case is ok but if your going to use the camera under a wake board I think recording sound from another source would be better ?
What brand mic did you use? I bought a mic with an "L" shape connector and it didn't clear the yellow clip to shut the cover, now I need to find one with a "straight" connector like the one you're using I can't find them anywhere please help.
I can't find mic for this. Everything else is ready, but I'am missing small plug with thin cable. Any links to ebay or somewhere else, where i cam buy mic. Thanks for the good video.
Hey, thanks. I'm thinking of buying this cam but the mic and an adjustable ball mount on my helmet are two things I'd need. Your video answers the mic problem and a mount shouldn't be too difficult. Presently using a keyfob cam inside the visor but want better quality video. I've a split type bullet cam, but the cables to the main recorder are a nuisance. This cam has potential (like the flip out screen attachment now available) plus the combination of video quality, price, and size.
I'm not sure if the waterproof casing has the alignment for a USB hack ? Otherwise repeat in the same way as the Mike mod.
dude your good at these vids can you make some more
Quick question: I can't for the life of me figure out why you covered the other input/output ports? Is it just to keep them dust free, etc?
excellent!
very awesome. Thanks for the video.
Cheers mate.
apple headphones work as a microphone with this camera. You'll still need to provide some sort of wind/foam over them, but they do work.
What Mic did you use?I dont think an L shaped jack would work,it nees to be straight....right?
very well done mate grate vid. thanks
Thanks squire :)
That would be awesome. Is there material enough in the catch to file that much off for a standard jack?
No, but using an iPhone headphone adaptor there is plenty of room. Then you can plug any mike into it. If that makes sense ?
Awesome video, job well done. I will be doing the same to mine, thanks a lot!!!
Hey guy!
Great job, well done! :-)
What kind of external mic U use? (forget to show it)
Can U reccomend for us, witch are the "best" choise for this sony.
Just curious, why couldn't you just drill right through the black tray, while you are at it?
Great mod mate but where to get a short jack like that. It seems that others will be too long to close the catch
It's tricky to find one so this weekend I filed out more of the yellow catch to use a thicker plug. I'm going to have to make a "Part two" of this vid I think. I've been experimenting with home made stereo mikes as well, one on either side of my helmet in the ear area. Works awesomely !
thanks a lot .. just what i was looking for !!
Your welcome :)
Where can I get this adapter? Looked everywhere but they are toobulky to fit inside the helmet. Would like to see the closer details of how you fitted it together as I cant seem to find the right bits for this, Sony has a lot to learn about where to put outlets
The microphone you mean ? I made it from a headphone cord and soldered it to a microphone electret. I made the hole much bigger after I made this vid. I've now switched over to the newer case with the same mod. I found I could use any standard small thickness microphone plug with a bigger hole too. I should have a new video up with the new case mod's I've made one of these days.
I'm not sure ? The shaft is 2mm thick if that helps.
Fantastic video...it answered all the questions i had....step by step...i need that I'm having a friend do it because i'm not good with power tools.....i'm just a nerdy guy lol
Very good ! I'll do on mine ! Thanks
Your welcome :)
Great video thanks :)
my sony action cam makes a crunching sound when I move it while i am recording video. do you know why that is?
Something is interfering with the microphone. Are you using an external Mic ? If you are try it on something else like your computer and test it. If your just using the camera then you might need to pop open the case and see what's going on inside. I wouldn't recommend opening it up though, it's pretty fiddly in there.
Great vid! With the Sony mounted on your helmet, how do you make sure the camera is shooting video when you turn it on?
Thanks for the kind comment. The camera makes enough of a sound to hear it's recording, even over the engine note.
which you use the tape used to secure the bracket on the helmet, gives me the right name and characteristics to see if I think here in Brazil, still not found, just thought imported, and has large rollers.
Thanks.
3M Dual Lock. Você pode encontrá-lo no eBay.
thanks !!
Very nice mod!
I did a few tours in Denmark on my old Fireblade 93 with the Sony stuck between my cheek and the helmet - much less wind noise, I can hear the engine in the recording, the visor is protecting the camera, nobody can see that I'm filming and I can comment straight to the camera without any problems.
Only issue is that the video is a bit tilted, but no biggie.
BLT-HB1 - I considered it but theres a couple of reasons stopping me and others buying it. First thing is theres no protection from rain or weather, so if it started raining you'd have to change systems. Second is the lens is open to the elements and it's going to be expensive to repair if damaged. Thirdly, the camera comes with a waterproof housing so it's close to hand and pretty easily modded. Not all the accessories are easily available yet so that's another spanner in the works.
Heh really well done i must say i might buy another housing so i have one water prof for surfing and one for fishing just bought the action cam taking it up to the mountains fishing and been having a lot of wind noise problems but thanks to you could be problem solved ill let you know how i get on cheers from j spraggo
has any one tried this with the AKA-LU1 lcd screen case?
finally i made this set up, but i have a problem, i only have audio in 1 channel :'( . i used a mic from an old headset (with only two cables) and soldered the common and one of the other 2 cables to the 3.5 mm plug i salvaged from an old music headphones. How did you solder the mic? thanks in advance pal.
So on the plug that goes into your Camera, is it Tip, Ring, Sleeve ? So there are two black rings ? From the mike there should be at least two wires. You need to solder the tip and the ring together and the found cable from the mike to the sleeve. Hope that makes sense ?
amazing!!
"maybe sony will make a case that'll allow this"
Never did and never will
awesome video! I just did this but I'm having a problem with my mic. Its too big and long with extra plastic to protect the wire. Where can i find a slim 3.5 mic like yours or even an adapter? a link would be great :)
Try eBay with the listing "3.5mm Male to Female Plug" You should be able to find a few with thin plugs that will work with the mod in the video.
job and idea well done! we have the same speed sauer helmet though!. d*mn that's creative! from holes up to the silica gel absorbent. - MMR - Malaysia
Great job!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks ! :)
Olá amigo, comprou esse microfone no ebay também? Pode me falar o código da versão por favor?
Eu não tenho certeza qual deles irá funcionar para você no ebay. Talvez comprar um barato e experimentá-lo ?
Sir, still to now I look to much clips from GoPro 2 to sj4000 or fantec beast action cams and specially I concentrate for 3.5mm input jack. The last on from GoPro Hero 2.
They ask second hand in my area to much money for. I look to hard GoPro liked cams because I was so stupid to order much connection for GoPro in the mind to get enough accessories.
I was actually in the mind to order the sj4000 and solder an microphone. But my interesting is gone because the color of the sh4000 is to white, not naturally.
I seen your video and also some sony action cams. The camera seem to has a good video and color plus it has the option to go not to wide '90 degrees I guess.' Will you give pls the right name of the camera you show to us?
The tape 3M DUAL Lock seem 1" and 25mm wide! So you use two strips? Or you pay bigger size strip?
Concerning the 3.5mm jack ... For other people that read, take an headphone with the small 3.5mm jack, cut the wire and solder ( for those that do not know how) be inventive! I did it and on the other end I solder an Micon 2 from Rode were I can connect the best Rode Lavalier microphone.
Hope you make time to answer.. Note: if I analyzed your clip and mic construction, I do not think that driving in the rain with the bike water comes in. To be sure you can indeed use some rubber or other foam. Nice job, seriously nice innovated job!
I guess that would be possible but it would very likely break the plastic black tray, it's a pretty flimsy little thing. I wouldn't recommend drilling both.
Oi amigo boa tarde
Pode me dizer o modelo desse microfone
Ou onde compro?
Essa conexão p2 mais curta fica bom
Nao precisa furar tanto a caixa estanque
