  • If you live in the south, chances are you have an American Beauty Berry Bush growing in or around your yard! If not, they can easily be grown in the south zones 6-10. But there are other varieties available in other climates as well.
This plant is greatly medicinal, the root, leaves and the berries. This video is all about the leaves.
The leaves are known to be a natural bug repellent. You can simply crush the leaves in your fingers and rub them on your skin. Or as in days of old, horseback riders would put leaves under the saddles of their horses to keep flying pests away. Today we will make a spray and a salve that you'll absolutely love....especially if you are tired of those pesky Asian Tiger mosquitos!!!
This recipe is SO VERSITILE! No measurements needed except maybe the beeswax though it's forgiving also.
Start by collecting your leaves.....as many as you want.
    Wash them. Dry them.
Add to a container with either a small amount (less than half the amount of leaves) rubbing alcohol or vodka. Shake/mix well. Repeat often as it sits for at least 3hours to overnight.
Then add more oil at least equal to the amount of leaves to even double.
    Blend. Strain.
Place in a pump bottle now or take one more step to make a salve.
Place in a double boiler, add beeswax (1oz per 1cup of oil mixture).
Heat until all beeswax is melted.
Pour into cute little jars you can easily get your fingers in.
Makes great gifts too! But don't forget to label them!
Next week we'll discuss those adorable little purple berries!
    Have a great week yall!
    Your Friend,
    Shannon

Great video....I needed some of this yesterday! I have not been bothered with mosquitoes this year until I was working in the garden late yesterday afternoon. I will be getting me a Beauty Berry Bush from Penny this week.

Question: I did this and I put in the beeswax like you said, 1oz per cup, and after I melted my beeswax into the oil, it separated and is part liquid and part wax. Should I reheat it and put more wax in?
